He said you should get fitted for grips, not necessarily get fatter ones. Telling people to get fatter grips would be like telling a football team they should all play in size 11 boots. Also, don't forget that John Daly is paid by Superstroke. If it was as simple as everybody gets bigger grips and plays better, do you not think you'd see a change within the professional realms of golf? They would have done it years ago.

There is actually a really good write up on the web that suggests Bryson's same length wedges hurt his chipping game. He had better chipping numbers early in his college career when using shorter wedges than he does now. In fact, his chipping numbers are so low that they fall around those that are ranked around 50-70 on tour even though he's easily a top 10 in the world.

@Milkywaymike 3 күн бұрын
@@jpdst29 It might be a shaft issue... I use the AeroJet max driver head with the stock regular flex shaft and my typical shot shape was usually straight, baby fade or a wild slice which progressively got worse even when I tried Jumbo Max grips. I then started experimenting with different shafts that were a tad shorter (43.75 - 44"). I settled with a Helium 5F3 (lighter) regular flex shaft and dialed in my loft settings. I rarely ever slice now! Shafts, shaft weight and club head weight along with your swing path play pretty big roles in ball flight, more-so than grip size.

I played with jumbomax grips for a full year. I hit every club through the bag about 10-15 yards further, but I noticed shots that would typically fade were over-fading, and slices were WAY more severe. It's something to get used to, but there's definitely something to be said about gains in clubhead speed. I can see them being great for someone who consistently pulls/hooks the ball.

I switched a few weeks ago to Golfpride Jumbos. The are 30g heavier than the normal size. Changed my swingweight from D1 to maybe C3 or something. I gained the same distance like you but i can hit the clubs now slower and more precise for the same length than before. But it’s true there is more tendency to slice or fade the ball with longer clubs but I grip a bit stronger now an can compensate is.

Not the medium sized ones but they're significantly bigger than any standard grip. My reason is to take pressure off my aging hands. I can't go back. From what I see from your golf with those grips, you should play a full 18 committing to the new lines and see what happens. Softening your draw or hook looks good..

I just switched to jumbo grips on my new clubs driver to 60degree and I’ve seen a noticeable difference in my game right away. I was averaging plus 4-5 on 9 holes consistently. After switching to the jumbos I dropped 2-3 shots off my game. Now shooting 1-3 over consistently. Being a former hockey player which is a lot of wrist movement i was alot like Rick in which I had a lot of unnecessary movement. Now with the jumbos I can feel the difference. My misses left and right are a lot less noticeable and I can feel my wrists almost locking in place rather than turning through my swing 👌 highly recommended anyone especially people with bigger hands switch to jumbos or bigger depending on hand size!

About ten years ago (before it was cool) I got bigger grips put on all my clubs. I’m pretty tall and have big hands and was playing super thin grips and my local pro told me to put some fatter ones on next time I needed a regrip, I was so naive I didn’t even know they made different sizes I thought they only had different styles. Anyway I put some big grips on ( not as big as the ones in the video but much bigger than what I was using) and stopped wearing a glove (I’m left handed so it was always a pain to find one in the size I needed so I just ditched the glove altogether) and my game improved significantly. Considering I did literally nothing to my swing, didn’t upgrade clubs, etc, all I did was get more of my hand on the club and went from about a 12 to a 9. That’s a dramatic difference for changing something so simple. Of course I’ll never go back to smaller grips, I gained so much confidence with them that I ended up getting professional lessons and got my handicap down to around 3 for a while. I’m sitting around 6.5 now cause I just don’t play as much but I tell anyone that will listen to make sure they not only have fresh grips (because too many guys let them wear down to nothing) but to also get them sized correctly especially if you’re a bigger guy and have large hands. I told all the guys in my league etc years ago that grips were gonna be the next big thing in golf and they thought I was crazy and I never let them forget it now.

@@esoteridactyl so I have pretty thin hands that’s the problem. I’m 6’1” and have really long fingers but my hand isn’t big it’s thin plus I’m a left handed golfer so my option for gloves generally isn’t as varied as righties. If I get a large the fingers are long enough but it’s too wide so I can barely get it to stay closed with the Velcro, if I get a medium, it’s the perfect width but it’s way too short in the fingers. It’s like I need to order a specialty size or something which I’m sure is probably available online now I’ve just been playing without a glove for so long that I don’t miss it I don’t even really think about. That being said thanks for the recommendation I’m gonna go look these up right now and see if I can find a size that works and give it a try.

So far I really like the Standard Jumbo and the XS is good too, but I think next season I am going to switch my irons to the Standard Jumbo. They are a few grams lighter, still plenty thick that I can play without a glove if I want and it is way more comfortable than a typical lampkin. Funny, I find it much easier to get the club head square at impact, when I first got jumbo max grips I went from drawing everything to push fades, it was because I used to have a slightly open club face at address to reduce my draw. Turned the club face in a bit and tada! Hit them so much more accurately than before! Which is a bonus because I recently switched to jumbo max grips due to wrist problems and they have been the reason I can now play regularly again after 3-4 years of struggle

Really fun video to watch. I think the grips are seriously worth considering after that performance in the wind. I also really enjoyed the shorter, brisk video pacing as it allows me to watch a full video while getting ready for work 👍

I only have a Large/Medium glove size and I play with midsize grips and my forearms feel so much better, I can hit forever. With standard grips no matter how hard I tried to not grip too hard I'd get super tight forearms which ended up leading to cubital tunnel syndrome. I eventually plan on moving to at least Jumbo (or Standard Jumbo is what JumboMax calls it) or XS in JumboMax, but I want to get a little better first... plus the one thing I really dislike about JumboMax is how annoying it can be to put the grips on. You have to absolutely drench everything in solvent to stand a chance.

I think it is worth you doing a proper grip fitting with the jumbomax team because they can help you find the correct size AND ideal grip type since they have a few different types of grips with varing masses and tapers. I use the large ultralite grips on my wedges and irons and use the medium straight tech on my driver. i’m an xl glove size. I’d also like to add tghat i’m 19 and don't suffer from any hand/ wrist pains. John Daly agrees that thicker grips improve your game without question so maybe they’re worth investing into.

Your dispersion with irons was elite level for the conditions you were playing in. The chipping and pitching seemed to be better. Driver eliminated left which is your miss. My advice is try and draw your driver with those grips to hit straighter flights which is a natural feeling for you. You played better golf Rick.

I put the medium jumbomax on my driver and absolutely love it. It took some getting use to, but now I either hit a straight arrow of a drive, or just a baby draw. I can’t believe Bryson uses the XL grips. I got pretty good sized hands and the medium is way bigger than regular grips

I have GolfPride midsize MCC +4 on my irons and Lamkin midsize on the sand wedge. Need to update the driver and wood which are still standard and I absolutely notice an improvement with the slightly larger grips. I wouldn't go to jumbo but midsize should definitely be considered instead of standard. My driver has a Kahli white shaft which is very slim at the grip and I notice the difference compared to my irons. One aspect to be aware of when increasing the size of the grips is the weight. Your swingweight will decrease which will either need to be compensated with more weight added to the head or a slight change in your swing timing. It also explains the increase in swing speed as the club is now 'lighter' as the larger grip changes the counterbalance.

My hands are too big for standard grips.. I used to blister all the time.. Had to wear bandaids and double gloves for 18 holes... I switched to Jumbomax bryson grips and i love them.. My hands feels great, i never blister anymore.. I use the XS, S, and M size grips, and i love all of them.... Everyone needs to try the Jumbomax ultralight brysons...

Even if the jumbomax grips aren't for you, this video makes it seem like you'd do well with a few extra tapes on your current grips. Definitely seems to be something to mention the next time you're in for a fitting. Another option that's a bit odd that might make sense is to go to jumbomax smalls or midsize with some extra tapes just to get the ball turning over less on the misses. Could even adjust the tapes slightly for clubs like driver to get it turning over more, but irons and wedges use a few more tapes to get the ball flying straighter and take the mega draw out of play.

It's funny how what Bryson does suddenly draws attention. I fitted jumbo grips to my clubs about 25 years ago. My fingernails dug into the ball of my thumb with standard ones, switching to jumbo was a no brainer. A golf magazine in the UK also ran an article about floating your (golf) balls in salt water at about the same time, nothing new there either. Nothing against Bryson, I admire him greatly for trying different things. Having the same shaft length in all his irons is genius, it takes one variable out of the swing equation. I hope these get you back on your A-game Rick, fingers crossed.

Back around 2008 I went to the fitter to have bigger grips put on just because coming from baseball the clubs felt like toothpicks in my hands. You wouldn’t believe the fitters attitude. He acted like I was insane for even considering it. Funny how people act when you try to think out of the box.

I've been using midsized reduced taper grips for years now. My main miss is typically turning over the ball too much, hook. I wear a medium/large glove and my favorite reduce taper grip is the MCC +4. The larger and reduce taper grips do help keep my long shots straight, especially with longer clubs.

Hey Rick! I am switching from hitting a draw for years back to a fade, which is my natural shot shape. One of the hardest parts of the transition is committing to aiming to the left side and trusting the fade, but it is really just as simple as that. You did not miss left once in the video and have completely eliminated the left side. Play the fade and change your setup/aim to accommodate the ball flight.

I’m glad he got fitted. I’d love to see him try the ultralight version which don’t make your club feel heavier. I play the str8 tech, which I love and I can’t see myself going back to regular grips. I do think it’s harder for people who are more traditional (or have been playing for a long time) to give non-traditional things a proper chance.

I used to play with these but switched to Jumbo GP velvet grips. One thing I can say is that a bigger grip on wedges is a game changer for control. I built my new set with +4 wraps under the new grips and it’s been working perfectly. Grips matter. Keep playing these!

I play the medium jumbo max grips, everything is way tighter dispersion. My drives I can go hard at because I know it going straight-takes the hands out. I just put a 100grams on the grip (counter balance). Bryson, Jessie James and Martin Borgmeier have 123 grams and Retief Goosen has 80 grams. I love this weight and it helps me have more control in the handle. I can swing at 100 percent and have more control with the weight. I heard Jack Nicklaus had counter balance weight in the handle as well, but don't know how much weight. I've had he weight for two months and it's great! Next, I would love to try 50 grams counter balance in my irons.

The thing about the jumbo grips is that they are different feeling out of the gate. It takes a few rounds to get fully adjusted to them. I was using the medium and found them a little small. I seem to fall kind of between medium and large. Decided to go to large and the wedges, irons, and fairway woods are laser straight. Have a little fade on the driver but I'm unbelievably happy with the results. Give them a few rounds to adjust to and I'd bet you keep playing with them. Once you adjust you won't want to go back.

I'm surprised that Rick said that the grips weren't for him. I thought he played some great golf, and as you get used to using them, that will only improve. I was very impressed with Ricks chipping while using the grips, we all know it's not his strong point, but with the thicker grips he hit some great chips, especially as they were off tight links turf! I'm thinking of giving these a go, I suffer from golfers elbow in my left arm, and I'm hoping the thicker grip will help.

There is a natural tension release in the forearms, just holding a larger diameter golf grip. I would seriously consider using Jumbo Grips. I am using oversized Winn Drytac 2 grips now and they are a considerable improvement over regular grips.

Imagine just one month practice and just 1 round per week on the course what Rick could do. I have subscribed for years and I agree with many commentators here that Rick looked relaxed even though he was semi negative in his expectations. If you have watched through the years, you have seen Rick hit some great shots. You have also seen a tendency to draw or hook the ball into crazy hazards and his score get high. Rick could just play that more consistent fade with these grips and his scores would go down, his attitude would stay higher, and the break 75 series would become much more successful. Great job in crazy conditions

As a natural fader , I think these clubs are great for you. But that’s only IF your trying to play the cut from now on. To do so you have to change how you see the ball shape and change your starting line . Which could be difficult since you are a natural drawer. Especially off the tee. Once you do , you’ll be scoring. Good luck. You missing right is a lot better then missing miles left imo. Enjoy you seem more at ease.
