Episode 45 - Ricky chats with Sean McLoughlin and Stephen Knight.
The 45th episode of Ricky's radio show on Sirius XM.
Ricky Gervais is Deadly Sirius: Ricky with comedian chums and eminent guests discussing the big issues. Entertaining, thought-provoking, and often taboo-crunching chat about ethics, science and art; interspersed with utter bollocks and the greatest songs of all time.

So iv just finished Afterlife - brilliant Ricky, you are the gift that keeps on giving ❤ then I put normal tv on to see an advert for a documentary on restless leg syndrome followed by a bunch of "freaks" being put in a house together. TV gold right there for Karl, can you let him know and then get him on Deadly Sirius to ramble about it pleeeeease. I know it gets boring keep being asked about Karl and Steve but its what the people want 😁 you are all brilliant. Thanks for all the laughs always ✌❤

Hi Ricky, listening to this podcast in wigan. So get that in yer pipe. I win that one. I think jesus is just a red herring, of a simile to the universe, like Christmas time symbolises the death of darkness and the resurrection of light. Thus saying that science is the the power. And science died for all our sins.. Love your magical expressive mind. And I often wish I could find if I could have handled your genius, the way you have. Class in a glass mate. You simply MUST separate the art from the artist at all costs. How is there any logic otherwise? Just because a person's actions don't meet with whatever arbitrary standards of present-day society doesn't make the art/music/films any less amazing and beautiful

Vile? People just overreact. Think of it from Bill Cosby's point-of-view - he's the victim of society's crushing standards that he no doubt disagrees with; his frustration must be so real, at least leave his art to breathe and live on. Same goes for anybody you can care to mention
@defaultresponse1193
@defaultresponse1193 5 жыл бұрын
@@alternative-media-xxx yeah I'm struggling to see things from Cosby's point of view. Is it such a crushing societal standard that you shouldn't drug and rape people? Building a career in only doing the clean jokes and criticising others for being lewd, meanwhile being a monster offscreen. The hypocrisy certainly taints the work of the artist for me in this case, maybe those pudding jokes are still funny to others.

The beginning is so silly. The lack of understanding and nuance from Ricky is just disappointing. Of course, there is virtue signaling involved in these instances. It's involved in everything. He is virtue signaling now to his gang show how "pro-free speech" he is. Just because there might be some signaling involved doesn't mean the main points are false. John Wayne and Churchill are touted as heroes. Some people are saying that maybe they shouldn't be. Maybe we should focus on their complete legacy, not just the cool parts. It's exactly like taking down Confederate monuments in the US. While the reaction could be hyperbolic sometimes, the main point is reconsidering and rejecting legends and false narratives about our "heroes". It's called growing up as a society. Free speech doesn't mean promoting assholes are heroes. *it gets better when he starts talking about intent and comedy.
@Dantegrey1
@Dantegrey1 5 жыл бұрын
I think growing up is more about learning and conversation than declaring. Don't you agree that there is too much declaring and too little conversation in the Wayne/Churchill debate. Many may in fact discover that they and their opponents are not that far apart.
@DesiBookLover

@@Dantegrey1 I don't know what you mean. That's exactly what's happening. A conversation. People finally talking about their whole past not just cherrypicking the good parts.
@Dantegrey1
@Dantegrey1 5 жыл бұрын
@@DesiBookLover I remember discussing the politics of John Wayne back in the nineties. What is generally happening, cannot be called a discussion. It is people on two sides of a line shouting, while they stuff their ears. You try to make a nuanced point and both sides will jump you. Why are so many people suddenly shocked that John Wayne was a reactionary? If they only found out now, shouldn't they dive into his past (perhaps read a book) before demanding action from airports? When people jump to conclusions about someone in that way, without being curious about any nuance or any other opinion, they are not having a dialog - they are declaring. That's what I mean.
@DesiBookLover
@DesiBookLover 5 жыл бұрын
@@Dantegrey1 It's not that people didn't know. It's that people didn't care that their hero was a racist. The new generation that has grown up knowing that racism is bad, is shocked that these people were treated as heroes. Older people like me accepted it as "that's just the way it is". I still don't understand what you mean by "discussion". That's exactly what we're having here. In media, it was always been true that people talk to their audience, not to the opposing side. It's just more apparent with youtube and social media. With this new movement, One side reexamines the false narrative of our heroes and they are accused of being drama queens. The other side comes up with red herrings of cultural relativism and "it's just history" and "PC culture" and they are touted as the rational ones by people like Ricky. Of course, there should be more discussions, more open discourse. As Ricky said, there should be a path of redemptions for people who screw up. But that discussion can't start with misrepresentation of the other side.
@Dantegrey1
@Dantegrey1 5 жыл бұрын
@@DesiBookLover I think that Ricky is rather mild in his criticisms. I would definitely have been more critical. This is my opinion (summed up): The outrage culture phenomenon is extremely problematic for us on the left. There is a reason Trump turns to these issues every time he messes up. They had a large part in getting him elected. This is a winning issue for him. So much is at stake here and the left needs to win out around the world. Most people feel like throwing up, when they hear most of these grievances. We can do better. So, I suspect that you disagree but, given that this is my view, can you understand why this is so important to me (and Ricky and many others)?
@highnoon7097
@highnoon7097 5 жыл бұрын
Hate that word "woke". Such a shitty liberal media buzzword. Phrases already existed before woke that cover this issue, we don't need a word that sounds like Justin Bieber made up. "Politically correct" , or "socially aware", are perfectly serviceable phrases - we don't need woke.
