I laughed out loud at bits of Cemetery Junction. It's probably because I've been tuned into Merchant's and Gervais's wavelength for so long.

The Office and Extras didn't make me laugh, more made me cringe and I regard it as one of the funniest tv shows i've ever watched.

That's what they were focusing on, more intentionally cringe-worthy stuff. It pioneered that sort of humour really.

Literally all I remember from Cemetery Junction this many years on was that it was like the first on screen appearance of Karl Pilkington .

Cemetery junction was a bit less terrible than Derek. Probs because merchant ups that a bit. Derek is almost an utter nightmare.
@TulseLuper8 жыл бұрын
I'll admit I liked the first series of Derek because I was happy to see Gervais doing something different after Life's Too Short. Plus, although he was basically playing himself, Karl Pilkington was excellent and helped offset Gervais' phony sentimentality, which ultimately ruined the show. But the second Karl leaves, the wheels come off and it turns into the worst Robin Williams movie imaginable (Bless him.) It was embarrassingly bad. Cemetery Junction was just forgettable.
@TheOldBlackShuckyDog4 жыл бұрын
I thought Derek was decent enough
@Goochbot13 жыл бұрын
The thing is though, i don't think Cemetery Junction was a "comedy" really. It wasn't that the jokes failed, it was there there were no jokes for 90% of the film. Anyway The Office and (to a lesser extent Extras) were brilliant. Hopefully Lifes Too Short continues they're golden tv show streak :)
@etocadet14 жыл бұрын
the trouble with cemetry junction is all the press people said its from the makers of the office all the time which made people think it would have the same flavour when in fact it was something completely different. however i think that alot of films are misrepresented in the trailers to bring in maximum audiences, the thing is films shouldnt do that because you then attract an audience, its like making the saw films look chick flicky you may get a larger female audience but theyd hate it

Honestly, I never understood Marks 6-laugh-rule. If a comedy makes you laugh only six times, I think it's a bad comedy. I know plenty of movies that aren't comedies, which make me laugh more than 6 times. I mean, a movie is usually approximatelly 100 minutes long... Cutting out a couple of minutes in the end for the credits and stuff would mean, with six laughs, that you laugh once every 15 minutes. How is this acceptable for a comedy?
@MrGeorgFTW9 жыл бұрын
Dooker Bewitt Obviously it's a personal thing. I can't remember ever laughing at a film in a cinema, even though I laugh quite a lot in conversation. People are wired differently.
@dookerbewitt43839 жыл бұрын
MrGeorgFTW You're probably right. I don't know, I can't even tell you if I actually laugh out loud, or if, after a movie, can just tell you how many scenes I found actually funny. Because not every scene you find funny necessarily also makes you laugh. The only time I can really recall laughing like a mad man was when I want to watch "Scott Pilgrim"... Stangely, I was completly alone in the cinema, which makes it even weirder, since you usually don't laugh out loud when you're alone.

calling people nerd as an insult is unnecessary, childish and incredibly ironic when you're explaining Mark Kermode's theories on what makes a good fucking comedy.
@TulseLuper8 жыл бұрын
You're whinging way more than he is; Kit's being reasonable from where I'm sitting. And actually, Kermode himself is pretty dogmatic about the six-laugh rule. As this is a Ricky Gervais video, have you seen Mark's review of The Invention of Lying? He and Simon spend at least three minutes talking about the number of times Kermode laughed. There's no need for name calling, guys. It's only fucking Cemetery Junction, the exact moment when Gervais' career started to take a nosedive. It's not worth getting upset about. I sometimes forget that I've even seen Cemetery Junction.
@br00t4lbreakdownzfuk8 жыл бұрын
***** I literally told you I agreed with your point about the 6 laugh rule lmao. I've been noticing more and more lately that so many problems are a result of people just refusing to listen to each other. Peace

@BelatedCommiseration13 жыл бұрын
Hmmm...I may take issue with the mighty Mr. Kermode. A hallmark of a god comedy is that it makes you laugh. Of course the term 'comedy' can be pretty elastic. 'Romantic' comedies like Love actually or 50 first dates are not comedies to my mind but are actually soft focused romances with an off kilter slant. They are not funny, and I almost think not designed to be funny but they do adopt a slightly off centre postion. The laugh is as important to the comedy as the scream is to horror.

Never mind "Cemetery Junction" not being as good as "The Exorcist",I would prefer to be actually possessed by a bile spitting,head turning,crucifix fudding demon than have to sit through such a bland,ill conceived pile of tosh ever again!(and I think that "The Office" is a masterpiece!)
