Site manager: we don't pay overtime, you earn comp time and you can just use those first instead of pulling vacation hours (or sick hours if you want.) I spent 3 hours after the end of Monday shift because his nephew broke a water line and "we" fixed it; I showed him how I fixed it. I told Site manager the next afternoon I would be leaving 3 hrs early Friday. He thought he was being clever saying: Leave early 5 minutes every day until the 3 hours are gone, that way we won't miss you... ohh... and you'll still get the time back. I gave him the are you really that stupid look, "You wouldn't you do that with your time!" 🤔 A light bulb went off for him 💡 "Ok So this Friday? Have a good weekend."

One time I had a vacation to Germany planned for 6 months and put in a request for 2 weeks of vacation for the trip and my boss and his boss both approved it. A week before the trip I went in to make sure my boss remembered and told him I had everything lined out for when I was gone. He told me there was no way I was taking off for 2 weeks so I told him to follow me. We walked straight to his bosses office and his boss told me to enjoy my vacation while telling my boss to deal with me being gone for 2 weeks.

Ah bosses. So my last boss decided he was not coming back to work until the end of pandemic. So for two years he has been sitting at home doing his job on the computer while i have been doing the physical aspect of his job. So I wanted time off like you did. My bosses boss told him he would have to come into work. He refused. On the zoom call I was part of he was informed his services were nolonger required. That I would be getting a substantial pay raise to handle the physical end and the paperwork would be done by two administrative assistants who would go from part time to fulltime. He was, I will be in on Monday. As his boss said yes, you will be in to turn in your company laptop, phone and car. They turned his phone off, internet access and email off during the zoom call.

We had a incident when 47 telecommunications workers were constantly denied vacation for 3 years straight. Everyone had 6 weeks of vacation time that we had to take or lose them. And we could not cash it out. So from the middle of November to the end of December the company was forced into shutdown. When everyone returned to work we were fired for not working. Until attorneys showed up with A subpoenas and court documents. Then all of a sudden we received all back payments and calls to come back to work. Me I found a better job working for the company that contracted my old company to do complete tear down and rebuilds of the telecommunications infrastructure.

We have an extra part of our job where someone gets paid to clean the broiler, filter and change the oil from the fryers and clean the fry station and get the floors real nice. It pays about 50 extra a night flat rate that gets added to your check. So say you do 4 nights that's 200 more on your check. In a crappy job that actually brings your paychecks closer to management levels without the extra headaches. Well thanks to the recent health issues people were leaving but my manager wasn't even trying to hire anyone. So she changed my hours that I had to work. Now this extra thing is called porter. Porter work can only really be done once the store closed. I went from working whatever to close usually 3 to close and porter to 11 to 8, and gotta wait a few hours to porter. I cannot just get 2 hours of sleep and get back up. So I'd be forced to wait which I did by bringing my PS4 to work. But over time I started getting more and more exhausted. I would sleep all day on my days off. It wasn't healthy. So I asked to get a few porter days off that she should try to get another porter or full close. I was doing 5 days of porter a week. She basically told me she couldn't. But here's the thing, I am the best porter she's ever had and she didn't want anyone else cuz they just don't care like I did. So I applied for dairy queen and got hired there. I was literally being overworked by her, and she kept demanding I do this or that extra for me type thing and I would. But I had enough if she wasn't going to realize that she was already expecting way more out of me than anyone else that I was unreplaceable. But then love to shove in my face that I am just so I do more. It drove me nuts. So I left. She was forced to find more porters cuz shocker no managers wanted to stay an extra hour or two to clean the store with the closer. I did eventually come back cuz of issues but shortly after I went from no porter to 5. It proved my point that no one else will do it as well as I did it. I am in the process of trying to go do FedEx. Alot of places won't hire me though due to some last issue. I hope I get it cuz I'm tired of fast food. Way too toxic. We're expected to do so much so fast in so little time between cars for the measly checks we get. Seriously fast food should be paid more

Had a supervisor try to pull this shit on me. They had the audacity to try to call me during my younger brother's birthday party and left messages asking why I never showed. I straight up told them they were given *plenty* of notice given that the time off was in December and I put on for it in February, and turned my phone off for the rest of the day. They cut my hours the next week and tried to give me shit for it, but the thing about being the guy that lives 10 minutes away and can do pretty much everything is that you wind up getting called in when someone doesn't show. Head supervisor wasn't happy about that and basically told the other supervisors that I was at the bottom of the priority list for call ins from now on. That only lasted a week before they were calling me in themself. Turns out he didn't like the surge in the supervisors' OT that decision caused. I changed the wording to sound like a different job, but this is pretty much what it's like to work in fast food and retail. Cutting my hours and preventing shift managers from calling me in was an attempt to force me to quit that didn't work at all. That shit happens all the time

In the USA you're legally required to be given time off. Some companies give more than others. The thing is, those companies only give you vacation days ONLY because they have to, but they don't want you to use them. An employee that isn't working, is an employee that isn't making money for the company, especially if its a paid vacation. So, many companies do everything they can to prevent employees from using those days. It's actually pretty common for companies to use illegal tactics to prevent you from using your vacation days. If you find yourself working at a company, that you NEVER seem to be getting a break from, and they always have an excuse as to why you can't go on vacation with the time off you EARNED, then its time for your to either find a new job, or look up national, as well as your state, laws on what companies are and are not allowed to do. You'd be surprised how many laws are broken on a regular basis by otherwise normal well functioning companies. Sometimes all you need to do to get them to straighten your case out, is threaten a call to the appropriate authorities. Though, you may want to watch your back from then on.

So let me get this straight, I am GIVEN these days to use for a vacation, and when I choose to use them is not convenient for you, you can tell me I can’t use them. However, at the same time, if I don’t use them, depending on the employer’s policy, I either lose a vast majority of that time, or I’m reprimanded because they now have to pay me for all that unused time at the end of the year. Also, I planned this and notified y’all a month to a month and a half in advance so scheduling adjustments could be made to accommodate my absence, and you still found a way to deny it? That’s on you. Fortunately, my current employer is pretty good with approving vacation time provided it’s not during blackout dates and we give like a month advance notice (really just before the two weeks out for scheduling) and accommodating that absence. I get how for a lot of people though how it can be quite a hassle to take a week or two off.

There's only a few reasons they should ever have a right to deny it. Exception 1: insanely busy holidays tend to be first come serve basis if your business still needs to operate, and that I understand. exception 2. end of the year rush (of people trying to get under any vacation rollover hour cap) can cause first come first basis to take effect again. Exception 3. you don't give enough notice for them to get coverage, which can vary between businesses, my workplace schedules a whole month at a time, and all requests off have to be in by the 20th so they can get schedules and coverage figured out for anybody who wants time off

I worked for a place that would only let you take your vacation in the months from November to April. You also couldn't take vacation at the same time as someone else in the department. It got really interesting when you had 5 guys trying to use up 3-4 weeks each in those 6 months.

If I was the owner of a company and I saw/heard a manager saying this to someone or having this mindset I would tell him if it happens again he's gone. Treat your employees right and they will give you more and will actually care. Any basic system could easily fix any issues you would have with people missing and make a happier workforce at least if the following doesn't interfere with any labor laws. Have it where only a portion of your work force can take off for vacation at the exact same time be closed on major holidays and give holiday bonuses if you are closed or if you have to be open pay holiday pay to those who worked that day because you have to be open. Give 7 days of unpaid sick leave on top of the 7 days PTO per year and have it stack each year for a total of two years before it resets. Make it very clear PTO/ vacation is always approved unless the max people who can ask for PTO that week has already been hit and say they would have to use their sick days if they wanted off or tell them to postpone it by one week and it will be paid for, and the only requirement for PTO would be a two weeks notice and tell your employees to take a picture of evidence just in case they ever receive flak and have a number posted so they can reach out and inform you of a managers shenanigans of trying to deny of interfere with PTO. And if you really want to get into a good work practices then have 8 hour shifts but allow a 30 min paid lunch to be taken in the middle of their shifts. Then give mother's two weeks of paid maternity leave that can be stacked with their PTO or unpaid sick leave. On top of that give raises based on the amount of good quality work an employee does and it should cause employees to have a drive to do more higher quality work because they get rewarded for it and know they are treated right at your company and should make them more loyal to your business.

Ricky is right. and employers need to all collectively pull their heads out of their asses about how they treat employees. "Ask" for what I was promised. Lotta people get "sick" and need that beach therapy.

Ya rickys right on this. If vacation days are part of my payment for working then I get to use them as I see fit. What’s next my job gets to tell me where and on what I can spend my paycheck? No! It’s a notice not a request.

I’m on both sides. The requests are to make sure that not everyone disappears for the same 2 weeks. But management abuses the situation.

Yeah they act like you didn't work to get those days. It's good to notify well in advance and get it in writing it's been approved in case they try to change their minds... If they don't approve it then take it anyways. My stepdad had a week of his vacation get "cancelled". He just ignored it and pretended like he didn't know.

Isn't that funny in the USA? You have to "request to take vacation" on days you are promised. Almost like you really don't own yourself and the company owns you by holding your financial stability (and that of family) in their greedy, selfish hands. In theory they could just deny your vacation days until ... oopps ... out of days in the year.

This is common worldwide. Also, many companies allow for the accrual of personal days year over year - so you don't lose them if you end the year not using them. What you described is also a violation of labor laws so, no, that doesn't commonly happen even at companies that don't allow year over year accrual.

I used to work at a place Tuesday through Saturday. They couldn't get enough permanent staff for Saturday so they rotated M-F people in. So when I tried to schedule time off, they would never give me the Saturday, just like I was a regular M-F person (cuz you're not allowed to skip out of the rotation). The many times I called off *cough cough* those Saturdays in the middle of an event or trip... lol

I’m the same way and even more so in my case, which is just taking an unpaid day every once in a while with 14+ days notice, usually so I can see my family which I only get to about 5 times a year. You can schedule me but I will not be showing up.
