He couldnt say a word and told us that our problem and for us to come up with 1. We see an electrician in a harness with his rope tied around a concrete pillar thats on the ground. Fun story: about 4 years ago, I was working a job building new dorms for an Indian casino out here in CA. Large general contractor running the job. I show up and they do the safety brief, at which time we're told that whenever you are 6 feet off the ground, you need to be tied off. Ok, kind of stupid, but not a huge deal. Then the safety lady goes on to reiterate: any time your head is more than 6 feet off the ground, you need to be tied off. "Excuse me, Miss Safety Officer, but where do you want me to tie off? Because I'm 6'5", and I don't want to get a safety violation on my first day just walking around." Yeah, they changed that policy real quick.

@Mr.Sparks.1732 жыл бұрын
@@madmanwithaplan1826 good god, at my current site that would be an absolute nightmare. The site is a 6 floor multi residential building, the elevator is still in several crates on the first floor. There is no crane access for floors 2 to 5 so the staircase and scissor lift is out of the question. Not to mention they would be an absolute pain to navigate and store in the 6 foot wide hallway, and impossible to get into each suite of the building. Our crew consists of 3 people, counting myself and the boss, so having one person holding a ladder all day is not exactly feasible, though technically possible. The ceilings are 8 foot ceilings, steel stud + drywall. Definitely not structurally sound enough to use as an anchor point. Besides we cant be putting holes in the drywall at this stage of the project. Being a sparky, I practically live on the ladder. I'll grab the other guy to stabilize the ladder if I have to do something like reach over a few feet while up on a 12 foot ladder or something. Something where tipping the ladder is something that can happen easily and the resulting fall would be severe. But when up on a 8 foot in wedged up in an access hatch? Nah, I couldnt tip the ladder even if I wanted to. Thank god our safety guy is more or less for show on this site. He basically only bothers you if you're getting into some real sketchy shit (like when a plumbing apprentice was attempting to light a torch next to the site's propane tanks) and he just makes comments like "the safety glasses work better on your face than on your shirt" when he catches you without PPE.

This is what happens when you ban lawn darts. I get most of us got into construction because we just had to find out what those paint chips tasted like as kids, but all those other kids that nature and a 4 ounce piece of sharpened brass would have taken out, went on to get useless occupational safety degrees and OSHA 500 cards to torment us and add 30% to the labor cost of jobs.

There's a place in Texas I used to pick up pre-fab steel at, their whole setup was you securing your trailer while wearing a shoddy safety harness they provided. Granted the load can be high and slippery, but more often than not the load was greasy in places and covered in plastic so falls could happen. Main bad thing is that you were often alone in barn/warehouse with the possibility of being stuck in the air if you fell. They had to add security cameras after one big fella slipped and hung by his harness, too heavy as the thing cut off his circulation leading to death. Safety gear isn't always the safest bet.

I've worked at the same place for 20 years and was there when we went through the transition to get more safety minded(large machine shop). I remember when they wanted us to be safe but some of the stuff we did was inherently unsafe and you couldn't do anything about it like deburring parts and finishes in certain areas you just HAVE to put your hands on while it's still in the machine spinning. I told them once I wouldn't do it because it was unsafe. Of course I was just screwing with them for getting on to me about something else safety related.... That's the part that sucks about safety, not everything can be made 100% safe. Accidents happen. I've actually seen safety blind people to dangers because "this area is supposed to be free of dangers!" There's no such thing. It was when we put yellow taped walkways on the floor. Nothing was supposed to be in the walkway so people wouldn't trip. Well a guy assumed there was nothing in the way and didn't look where he was walking and tripped on the corner of a pallet that was just barely over the yellow line. After that at safety meeting I always remind everyone of this and that nothing is made 100% safe. It's up to you to watch what you do and what's going on around you. You can't assume anything.

According to OSHA you are allowed to go as high up on a ladder as you want if the purpose is to tie off. I just had a big issue on a site I’m working on about this and found that out lol.
@iglidor2 жыл бұрын
Which does not solve the other problem - Often when you are using tall ladders, there is nothing up there to tie your harness to. You absolutely can not tie yourself to ladder. You can not tie yourself to the lets say lights that you are working on there because they can not hold your weight. And if it is in cramped/inacessible space, you can not use lifting platform (if you even have one in first place.). Official answer is that in these cases you are required to build scaffolding. Even if the job is just to change lightbulb and it would take you 30 seconds tops, according to rules you need to bring all the pieces of scaffolding there, have someone certified for building scaffoldings to be present and put it together under his directions. Test it and then use it. And then of course dismantle it and put it back. Next time I will see someone do that, it will be first time

@@tammycarpenter7364 Fall protection/arrest systems are required on FIXED ladders greater than 24'. OSHA 1926.1053. Never tie off on a portable ladder. What would a person tie off to, and how would a person know if the tie off point will hold a 200lb worker?

I feel ya, in 100°F, it's just too dang hot to wear a harness all day.. Sometimes you have to throw out that magic word "infeasible".
@averagegamer69522 жыл бұрын
I hung billboards for a few years, anything over 4 feet you had to be hooked off. Even if it was 5 feet off the ground... if you fell youd still hit the ground as the lanyard was 6 foot till the break away, which goes another 6. More likely to get hung up in it then it help you.

Had this discussion SO many times: Why isn't your harness hooked on? What do you propose I hook myself to? How about that pipe? That pipe, that's the colour that means' Sulphuric Acid, and is hot as hell? Great idea, then, if I fall, I won't just have to worry about the fall, but about potentially rupturing the pipe ad getting showered in hot acid! GREAT IDEA! I can see you went to college to learn ALL ABOUT SAFETY!

The Construction 6ft fall rule is from "Point of attachment". if it is attached mid back and your lanyard is attached at your feet it can only be 3 feet long, so the point of attachment will only travel 6 feet (3ft to the level of your feet then 3 further feet) If you are on portable ladder there is no rule because the only thing to tie off to is the ladder and that will just fall with you. you just are not to stand past the point on the ladder manufacture states is safe on the ladder you are using. And the fall protection rule is waved when Installing fall protection/anchor points in most cases. Edit: no fall protection is necessary until you are 6 ft above ground level. The Above 6 Ft is the max Unrested Fall distance. When arresting devices are used the math gets A little odd and the Correct fall protection must be used for the height you are exposed to Eg no 8 Ft fall arrest systems when the max fall distance is 6 ft. Most of the time What OSHA is thinking about when they say fall protection is a guardrail on a hole or unprotected edge. PPE is always the last option. (I have seen scaffold with guardrails put up around a roof to act as fall protection.)

I hated having to put a harness on at my last job, the rule was if we dig a hole 6ft or deeper we need a harness.. it was fine when it was a giant gaping sandy hole but they wanted us to harness up for EVERY hole over 6ft, so even if it was only 6 inches wide we'd get in trouble for not wearing a harness 😡
@tswims922 жыл бұрын
But in general construction it’s at 6’ that you have to have fall protection. Plus Ricky is right you need actual rated tie off points, you can’t just clip on to whatever you want. The saftey guy will get you for that. Not that it stops GCs from making you wear a harness tied off to nothing for looks sometimes.

In my experience as a commercial roofer the thing harnesses are best at is tripping you when youre just a foot or two away from the edge

Hmmm I've been at a site and I don't think anyone puts on harnesses. We just want to get into the ceiling and do our wiring/HVAC/whatever and get back down. Like Ricky says, if someone ties off we'd just do more damage and/or get more hurt

What is important is to be sure the lanyard is shorter than the distance to the floor. Just saying. This really is Rickey's fault and he screwed up big time. Sometimes it seems like he is the new guy. He didn't have a safety man look out posted. I mean ground man. Yea yea that's the ticket a ground man.

Can confirm, air conditioning in the American South and Southwest are absolutely vital for survival and people will have no problem fudging the rules if it means not having to deal with 90+ degree heat for months on end.

That's not an OSHA rule. OSHA never requires the use of a harness when using a portable ladder. The four foot rule is about when fall protection is required while working on on an elevated platform or walkway and it only applies to general industry. The height is increased to six feet for construction. A guardrail counts as fall protection. This is a startlingly common misconception and the false belief that OSHA is requiring something so silly as a harness on a portable ladder is a big contributor to people shutting down their brains and failing to even attempt to learn and understand safety regulations.
@donkey45782 жыл бұрын
I don't think safety people actually read or follow the guidelines of OSHA. They are trying to justify their position, so they come up with anything they can think of that sounds "safer" even though they have no real world field experience. I did fire sprinklers in a Conagra plant that required us to be tied off anytime on a ladder. Safety can make up whatever rules they deem fit. They had some dumb story where someone fell off backwards and landed on their head and died. But really it sounded like a bunch of bullsh1t and circle jerking from the safety team.

We all know that the overzealous safety rules will take a back seat to productivity every time. I've been a millwright/ mechanic/ welder/ electrician for over 20 years in a couple of large corporations. Just remember the creed: We the willing, do the impossible for the ungrateful, and have been doing the impossible for so long with so little that we can now do anything with nothing.

@SnowingNapalm2 жыл бұрын
there's saftey in comfort... and the restricted movements of a improper clothing options, aka harness i find more dangerous than anything especially at "low altitude" over 10 ft up well even longer cause the catch chords gotta stretch and you'll still hit the ground hard but if you don't got nothing to tie off to .. hey I'll wear it when I'm 50 ft up so i have enough fall distance that it can be of use but not for the second rung 🪜 of a latter no sir I'll climb a 20fter no harness needed but a 50 ft ladder it's just nice to have a resting seat when climbing up and down boom lifts and scissor lifts save alotta leg work but don't necessarily need a anti fall off device until ya start going up and then can't reach so have to put up a ladder 🪜 in it or stand up on saftey rails... not cool to fall with that though 😐 ya gotta know what you're doing and not let yourself get hurt or others

Worked construction for years. If anyone ever told us to tie off in a ladder, regardless of how high up we were, we would’ve just walked off the job. Been on the highest legal step of a 14 ft ladder before without a harness. If you’re worried just maintain your 3 points of contact and you’re fine.

Even at a ups logistics facility in Windsor ct, they mandate that you use these big yellow steps to reach packages at the top of the trailer. These things are about 3x3x2 ft in area. We have a conveyor belt that extends into the trailer to help make unloading easier. guess what the width of the conveyor is, 4ft. If anyones been inside a trailer container or even a shipping container you know it’s just barely bigger than a hallway. So trying to fit the required load stands along with having the conveyor in the trailer is impossible. They will not fit at the same time so you gotta keep the conveyor about 6ft behind you. This becomes a slow process where you grab the load stand, raise the conveyor so you can slide the load stand up, lower the conveyor, move it up a few inches, pick off the top 2 layers of the wall your on, and do the process in reverse as now you have to move the load stand out of the way to reach the ground level packages. In the end none of us used load stands and we just pulled the walls down recklessly, a lot faster and easier than grabbing a big cracked plastic yellow box. So if you ever wonder why your packages come with dents or excessive tape, that’s why
@rmo98082 жыл бұрын
I don't wonder why packages come like that. We did the same thing at Lowe's when unloading.
