My boss has been office bound for a while so he was losing his sympathy for the guys out in the field. He recently had to go bid a job in the middle of nowhere with zero shade when it was 102° and he suddenly found his compassion again.

If you respectfully disagree when companies get this disconnected with employees they usually make a little change. My boss said "I had to work in the heat back in the day and it wasn't that bad!" And I respectfully replied " sir, with all due respect, that isn't worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin getting it on." They made me the king of the company afterward

I literally just got off the phone with my boss and he was talking about how behind we are getting on the projects, I asked him to come on down to the job site and show us how it's done. He politely declined and asked me to just keep on working as hard as I can without keeling over. Granted, I have seen him work in these same kinds of conditions, but he is mostly an office guy these days.

Facts! Just the other week my superintendent was saying that I Wasn't working fast enough and I was mad as f***. Part of the problem is that they want to put pressure on workers on workers in the construction industry knowing good and well that the labor pool is shallow. I've been able to kind of work through that at this point however they need to understand that if I'm not good enough for the job I have no problem with being replaced but I'm gonna do my best and that's all they're gonna get. Workers cannot "Manifest" years of experience, it takes time.

@@andrewshepherd5249 majority of warehouses and factories don't have AC because they're pretty much useless. Doors always open, huge space to cool, massive electricity costs. Fans though, we had probably 300 fans around the factory and warehouse, mounted and on the ground. At least for my factory it could be -10 outside and you'd be hot inside in jeans and a t shirt.

I work at one of the Southern UPS hubs. These double length metal semis the young bucks work in are microwaves in this heat - usually 10-15 degrees hotter than the outside, because the yard drivers leave 'em closed and locked during the day and the air in there just boils until we link them back up to dock. Turnover right now for Load / Unload is about 85% in the first two weeks, and y'know what, I can hardly blame 'em. I remember what it was like to be broiled like a lobster without so much as a fan in those trucks with you. God bless all the boys on the line out there.

I work in a prison as a kitchen supervisor and this hits a bit close to home for me as well. During our summer months, the temperature inside the kitchen can reach upwards of 100 degrees at times. We were supposed to get a new AC unit last summer and it actually made it to the facility... and then was "redirected" to be installed over the admin area where the warden has his office. Needless to say, we in the kitchen (offender and staff alike) are just a wee bit salty about this. Interestingly enough, we can't seem to get any of the admin people to come down and see what it's like, and any staff that come in generally stay in the kitchen no longer than they have too. We've complained bitterly, and I'm fairly certain that the offender kitchen workers have started the process of making formal complaints from the outside, via their families. Can't say that I blame them. Supposedly we're going to get an AC unit this summer, but I'm not holding my breath at this point.
@peanutheadrules
@peanutheadrules 2 жыл бұрын
That sounds really rough.. I wonder how the laundry area is. That one was always hot and dealing with all the hot stuff out of the dryers only makes it worse. Good on their families for making formal complaints, hopefully that can start to get things movin for ya! You guys have hot stoves and no AC… f that. Is there anyone you can file a complaint with? HR?

I'm not in a prison, but I am a supervisor at a factory. Our AC went out at the end of last summer and our admin was supposed to have it fixed before the start of this summer. Turns out they kept putting it off to make our numbers look better on paper and figured they would have time to have it fixed before the weather got hot again. Well, here it is 105 degrees outside and 114 in the plant and the plant manager is saying they cant replace it until the end of the fiscal year which is next month. Meanwhile they're sitting cool in their offices.

Brings back memories of working in a warehouse without AC in the summertime. I used to drink a gallon of water before I started my morning shift. And then wash the salt out of my uniform regularly due to sweat. The amount of blood, sweat and tears that make up "the economy" should not be understated. I think lots of government type people would benefit from a week or two loading up vans in a 100+ degree warehouse with a forklift running 80% of the time.

I experienced something similar to that except I worked in a valve manufacturing plant where it was over 110 degrees in any given area and I worked next to a huge paint line oven, around 280-320 degrees. The front office was complaining about production. a A little later that day the air conditioning went out in their offices.. The next day we had big jugs of ice cold Gatorade everywhere and all the group leaders were thanking everyone for working in the heat.. Instead of bitching at day shift they started bitching more at night shift.

My last job was great. It was in a huge chemical lab. Several floors worth. Now there was no air conditioning in the mechanical rooms, except that the air handlers were in the mechanical rooms. All you had to do was open the door and stand inside. There were occasional complaints about the smell.

108 sounds nice. I'm in a warehouse at a glass foundry. It was 130 the other day and I was complaining. So my boss's boss took me to the "hot end" where it was 165. I decided 130 wasn't so bad after that. (Heat Index temps)

I worked as the food service officer at my local correctional institution for a while. My office had AC most of the time but i rarely went into the office because i like to move while I work and staring at the cameras just feels boring. Occasionally I would go into my office to do paperwork or eat lunch and inmates would always "conveniently" need paperwork like inmate request forms or the like. I obviously knew they just wanted to sit in the AC for a minute or two while pretending to fill out a form and I would let them because it's fucking hot in Florida and sons of these guys were in their mid 60s. Well one day the AC went out at the peak of summer and it got so hot and humid in the office that water actually started accumulating on the floor. I filled out the paperwork to get the AC unit fixed but it was so broken that it had to just be replaced. I ended up getting told that it wasn't in the budget, which is bullshit, and that I would have to wait a few months for it to be replaced. Well the officer uniform is fucking crazy. The Class B uniform is basically black pants, a dark shirt, a black undershirt, and combat boots. The class A uniform is even worse because it's long sleeves, and we would have a uniform inspection occasionally, which required us to all show up in Class A. While the AC was out, i showed up in Class A exactly once before the inmates started raising hell on my behalf. I guess when your almost pass pout from heat exhaustion it starts to get people's attention. Next day, I'm coming into work and the major tells me that a new AC unit would be installed in just a few days, and since my weekend was coming up it would be installed before I came back. Turns out that the inmates started getting their family members to complain to regional about the AC unit being broken and a safety hazard. Supposedly they were going to start complaining to the media about it but i don't know how true that is. I'm sure the inmates did it so that they could get AC for a few minutes at a time, while also making sure i was taken care of since most of them respected me

I worked on a steel pickling line with some very hot machinery, whatever temperature it was outside, you added 15-20 degrees Fahrenheit inside the room with the line. And probably an extra 30% humidity. Which was fine in the winter but in summer it would occasionally get to around 105-115 degrees with high humidity. Managements solution was fans and electrolyte popsicles. I got outta there in less than a year, moved to another department.
@Dragon_Lair
@Dragon_Lair Жыл бұрын
Dang. A better solution would be fans, buckets of ice water with foam straps that go around the neck that hold that cold water to help keep the body cool, coolers full of water and a designated break area that has shade, air conditioning and/or fans and even more coolers of water, gatorade/powerade and a fridge for people to bring their own lunches. Nothing anyone can do about the weather but those foam tubes that go around the neck go a VERY long way.
