How To Tune E-Steps/Rotational Distance - Sonic Pad Intermediate Part 2

In this video I'm going to show you how to calibrate your e-steps or rotational distance on your 3d printer when using a Sonic Pad running Klipper firmware.
Calibrating your extruder is important because it's what controls how much filament is extruded at any time while you are printing. If it is calibrated incorrectly then you will get under or over extrusion or, in other words, you will have too little or too much filament passing through the nozzle and onto your print.

This series is an awesome set of work, Ricky! Thank you so much. The only downside is how fast Creality seems to be updating things....and changing them. It appears they have changed the interface a bit on the Extrusion Configuration page and for whatever reason, I can't edit the rotation distance by hand so I had to do it manually in the printer.cfg. Even with this change, though, your videos made it easy to understand how to do that and all is well in the end. Thanks again for the effort to produce this....I went through every video to make sure they all got likes from me!

Creality has updated their UI a bit and the screen shown in this video is not completely up to date because of that. After some testing (and factory resets..) here is what needs to be done: Go to the same screen as Ricky shows but now you will see a dropdown menu, just keep the first (customization) selected. Note down the eStep (for me it was 7.5mm). And just follow the steps Ricky shows in the video. After the calculation just edit the 7.5mm to whatever it needs to be (for me it was 7.163mm).

The screen at 2:34 is different from what I have on my Sonic Pad. Maybe a different software version? I am missing the option 'extrusion rotation distance', instead I have below the maximum hotbed temperature the options 'Extruder model, Rotation distance (set at 7,5 mm) and Reduction ratio (set at 1:1). I tried changing the Rotation distance, and that worked for me. My printer extruded 97 mm, and after lowering the Rotation distance using the calculation you also used, it is now almost 100 mm. Txs for the videos. 🙂

I assume that Creality now is saving the PID without rebooting. I am from the future as you have said !!!!

I was looking under extrusion and when checking my rotational distance it's on 7.5mm which is way low compared to yours. Could 7.5mm be accurate or would you say there is an issue here? Cheers!

Hi - thank you very much for doing this series. I had a little issue with the extrusion settings. When I entered the M83 E100 F100 M82 - I received an error that it Key244 "Extruder only move too long (100.000mm vs 50.000mm) and that's exact wording. Then it said to see the 'max_edrude_only_distance" config options for details. I'm not able to locate that in the printer.cfg file. On an Ender 5Plus. Any ideas what I can do? Thanks!! BD

Maybe a little off topic but related, Printing a first layer adhesion test, cura says 75X75 prints 75X83 , is there more to calibrating steps than just this E-Steps? Have followed start to finish on these videos, superb source for the less experienced like me. now if only I could print the right size !!!

If the 75 x 75 should be on the x & y axis then e-steps or rotational distance doesn't affect these dimensions. There must be something else going on. Which direction is the measurement different to what you were expecting? I would try putting some tape on your bed and marking and measuring how far the nozzle moves when you try manually telling it to move 100mm. If it moves a different amount then you'll need to calibrate that axis. There are a few things that can affect this, what printer do you have?

@@RickyImpey Ender 3 s1 pro and it's the y axis thats always long, didn't notice when doing all you calibration etc as the size was never really important. Followed the whole basic and intermediate series, had good print quality etc , printed something where dimensions mattered and oops, great print just it was more likely to fit a 10 rather 8 inch tablet

on the off chance this is useful to somebody, fixed the issue. Print a calibration cube 40X40X40 measure each face. In the printer.cfg under [stepper_x] also Y & Z, edit the rotation_distance value X & Y should be the measurement adjust the Z as appropriate, print, measure etc

Thanks again Ricky. Question: If you use 220 degrees during calibration, but then later print with only 200 degress - wont that calibrate it wrong? I mean at 200 the PLA might not longer flow as easily, so you will get overextruding instead

It's not a problem at all, you figure is effectively 7.200, your calculation just happens to give you a simpler looking number.

HI Rick, just wanted to check something with you, i am running the latest firmware on the Sonic Pad V1.06.49.145 with a Ender 3S1 Pro, When going into the Extrusion Config page on the Sonic PAD it does not show the up ther same as yours , the Rotation distance is greyed out and set to 7.5mm, but running the test comes back at exactly 100mm

With the new firmware update, the extrusion controls have 3 different speed settings. Slow: F60 Normal: F180 Fast: F300 It seems their slow setting is 40 less than the F100 we were sending. I would venture to say that using the extruder control set to slow works fine for this test.

If the filament goes through the nozzle then it's important to extrude slowly and get your nozzle very hot so there is as little resistance as possible. If you do this it should be fine.

I too, having the pad for a few days, have installed it on Flsun Q5 and in the Rotation distance I have three possible configurations ( Castom->8.71mm - Sprite Extruder->7.5mm - MK8 Extruder->32.473) Which to change for Q5? For anyone doing this with an Ender 3 V3 SE, I had better luck changing the extruder model to a Sprite Extruder. My calibration was exactly perfect after that, before I was consistently under extruding 17mm even after adjusting the rotation distance. It was only when I changed the extruder type that it was taking my new values although the test was almost within 1mm after the extruder change.

I tried to change my extruder to sprite as i have an ender 5 s1. I press save and go back in the menu and when I go back into it it says coustomized on extruder. How did you managa to save this setting?

I set everything up for this test, but get an error saying that 50 is the most I can extrude at once. Should I just have it run twice and then measure? Or will that throw the numbers off

I have just tried this, but here's the thing, my extruder was pushing out exactly 100mm every time so was happy with the esteps, yet i printed a test cube that had 0.8mm sides that printed with 0.89mm sides a flow of 90% corrected it. I was under the impression esteps and flow ultimately did the same thing so why did i need to adjust the flow ?

I have and Ender 3 S1 Pro, and as @Godsgrave mentioned below the Creality changed the UI, the rotation number is quick smaller too, mine is factory set to 7.5mm. Fortunately, Ender 3 S1 pro, was very accurate with the default setting, and I didn't have to modify the number.

When I enter those commands (The e100 and fl100) it gives a message about not being connected (In spite of the fact, I am through the web browser). It also says check the serial port and says to verify that the firmware of the lower computer is upgraded? I was able to successfully conduct it by changing the extruded amount to 50mm.....and I did it still at the 100mm/m flow rate...mine turned out PERFECT all 3 times...So, I think I should be good.

Yes, some config files limit the maximum extrude distance to 50mm as you have found. You could enter the settings twice to get 100mm if you wanted but it sounds like you have it sorted.

Mine are greyed out and doesn’t even have a number in the rotational distance. The measurement still is within the 1mm though

not sure why but every time i change my extruder from custom to sprite and change the rotation distance and click save, once i exit it never saves, every time i go back to configurations its back to original numbers

Hmm, seems like they changed it. I'll have to update to the latest firmware and check what we do now🙄
