I attended classes 4 hours a day 5 times a week and completed 6 years of primary school Thai in 6 months to be able to speak , write and read Thai. Then another 2 months to prepare for the National primary 6 exams! Thank God I passed !! No matter which part of Thailand you are in I think all Thais understand national Thai. My best advice is to formally learn to speak Thai at a language school. Culture-wise, good to know also. I've lived here for a couple of years now, though been visiting for over 20. I've made an effort with the language but am still far from fluent - can get by in shops, ordering food in restaurants and having basic conversations with the Thai in-laws but there is still so much I don't know. My recent approach has been to watch Thai shows/films on Netflix with English subtitles turned on - pretty useful way to not just improve vocab but also pick up a few whole sentences Failing that there is always the language school option!

As Aor and the Family are from Ubon Ratchathai it's very much Laos Dialect when I am talking with Por and the other Thai people in the Village I use the trusty Hand Language to help get across what I'm talking about and they love that I at least are having ago at thier Language I have always said if you live in another country you should try and speak the Language.

This time around, the hardest part about being in Thailand has been the heat. The heat itself is manageable, but it’s the rashes on various parts of the body that are challenging. I think the body needs to get used to sweating more. Continual bites from ants or mosquitoes are another issue. They are very stealthy here, as I rarely actually see them. Applying Tiger Balm over the body at night has been a good solution. Some people say the weather in Thailand is wonderful, but they retreat to an air-conditioned room. When it comes to learning Thai, I believe it’s important to know the Thai script as it is phonetically accurate. Don’t rely on the way it’s transliterated in English. For example, if a word ends in “lor ling”, they spell it ending with an “L”, but that’s not how it’s pronounced. Having a girlfriend who speaks English isn’t going to help either
@RickyIsaan7 ай бұрын
You're spot on about the script. Yes the heat definitely takes some getting used to make but soon all will feel normal in that sense, even all the bug bites mate 😆

Hi there Kids are doing great and standing up with just a little help , I’ve been coming to Thailand since 2013 and living here full time since july2022 , my partner is a school teacher teaching English in the local high school, but she can’t teach me Thai , she just confuses me with all the dialects at the one time , I’ve explained one version only but it doesn’t work , I can go out and order food / lunch I know the money and numbers , can go fill up the car , the daily things I can manage almost, the conversational part not really getting the hang of , all my fault for not going to learn some where , I don’t hear the tonal part of the language and as a western person don’t know how to make those tones , so my answer to you is , the language is my difficulty but totally my fault , and at almost 62 it isn’t as easy to learn and retain these things , I live near korat (35km) in a smallish village and the nearest town is chokchai (2km) so I get a mixture of isaan and central Thai , but have to say it’s all good , I use Google translate for some stuff and add what I know and somehow get by , keep at it Ricky you’re young and have more time to learn , Regards Davy 🏴🇹🇭

Learning a language is a bit like learning to play guitar. You just keep chipping away slowly, adding more and more. Don't look at the end goal and being 'fluent' just keep improving. Even Thai people continue getting better at their language as do English speakers. I've been learning Chinese for over 20 years. After several years, you realise that is a large complex task that you will never complete. It's more about improving your communication skills.

Here's one of those dilemmas. Should I have taken my son home because I am from England and thus depriving him of his culture, heritage and family. You could argue that Ricky has friends and family back home who will support him. The reality is different though. Those friends and family have lifes to live and their own stresses to deal with. So, the vast majority of time he will be on his own. Here he has his Thai family offering that support and in time he will be able to take full time care of them. This is not unusual here and family support is almost a given when children are babies. I don't regret one minute the choice I made to stay here with my son. This afterall is where he was born, this is his country and culture. Like the girls, he can decide when he is older where he lays his hat and call home. The girls will decide, it is not our gift to decide the outcomes, it is our gift as parents to do our level best for children.

The Language is difficult for me to learn, I’m sure my wife is the only one who understands what I’m trying to say as she always repeats it to others 😂 Obviously Issan is slightly different to Thai as a language and I know my wife sometimes struggles with ‘village Issan’ as she is not Issan by birth. Just gotta keep learning….
You will need to have Thai lessons and speak properly, not from picking up as you go along as some people are speaking bad Thai language! It’s the same issue for Thai people who live in the UK if they are uneducated and not willing to have lessons as they find it hard to them so they end up speaking Thinglish and it’s hard to communicate to the others apart from their partners. I would encourage you to have some lessons as beginners. Best wishes

0 Between the ages and 3 and 5 will be the best time in their life. That's when you will discover which one is more adventurous and wants to go places and 1 who is certainly more reserved and stays at home. No harm in that that's just how it is. Enjoy your time, what you're we call him tonight Tom girl or Tom boy. Yes, when you enjoy time with her, but in a different way. Good luck my youngest son

Ricky what language do you want your girls to speak as their man language? If they don’t speak clear English they might not understand you or communicate with you?? Is it a concern?
