These competitors put that knowledge to the test as the young and older versions of themselves compete against one another with one of them securing a place in the champion’s rumble. Individually, we know what each of these competitors are capable of having seen them in action over the years. Some of us have followed their careers since their debut in wrestling, and others were only just introduced to these men during the later stages of their career. For me, I had known wrestlers like John Cena, Randy Orton, and Brock Lesnar when they were just starting out in the business and what they would eventually accomplish moving forward (I wasn’t even introduced to WWE until sometime in the 2000s). Sadly, it wasn’t those guys that emerged victorious in this rumble… it was Sting, or in this case the Sting from the ‘Surfer’ period. Whenever we hear the name ‘Sting’, we mostly remember him for the time he made a gimmick based off ‘The Crow’, the leather jacket, the bats, and cawing out to the audience. But his rise to stardom began back in the day when he had that blonde hair and had this ‘surfing’ persona which I’ll be honest I was never familiar with. While technically he was starting out in the Continental Wrestling Association, it wouldn’t be until he got into the Jim Crocket Promotions, specifically World Championship Wrestling, when folks would truly know the man known as ‘Sting’. Now this younger version of himself is on his way to the champion’s rumble where he hopes to obtain the biggest championship win of this series. But who was my MVP of this ‘Young vs. Old’ rumble? Let’s get down to the numbers: Of the thirty stars featured in this match, fifteen of the competitors we know and their start-up careers, a record EIGHTEEN competitors (6 youth versions, and 12 older versions) secured the most eliminations. The highest count of the day reached only ‘3’ eliminations, but that’s still two points higher than the average ‘1’ elimination. I give the Golden MVP Award for ‘coolest’ performance to: Surfer Sting Although it’s kind of cheating to give the winner of the rumble the medal, between him and three other competitors that scored the most eliminations the odds were more in favor for Sting. That, and the major difference in terms of length in the match was merely by ‘one’ spot in the match. Adding the combined score from his older version, which honestly wasn’t a lot, Sting was at least able to tie against Ric Flair’s combined run in his young and adult years. That to me is what I would call a major accomplishment. The Dull Participation Medal for ‘lamest’ performance goes to: ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin While I praise the ‘Stunning’ comeback performance for young Steve Austin, ‘Stone Cold’ run ended the moment he stepped into the ring. While it’s the older Steve Austin I am most familiar with, seeing the way he came in and out of that match so quickly… that honestly left a bad taste in my mouth. To give him credit, his performance was not as bad as Undertaker’s, both young and old (See my chart above), but honestly this one moment in the whole match was just too difficult to ignore. It pained me to have to give him a medal for this because I’d ‘still’ would’ve given him the medal even if his younger version emerged as the winner. Youth triumphs over experience today as Surfer Sting joins the ranks of various professional wrestlers and a pinch of celebrities going to this season’s championship rumble. With so much still to develop, several questions remain: Could Surfer Sting’s performance inspire 30 other WCW superstars to give it a shot? Could Gandalf’s announcement of this match spark a potential ‘Lord of the Rings’ rumble? Perhaps a match against stars from ‘Star Wars’ or a rematch against ‘Game of Thrones’? But that still leaves the biggest question of them all: Who’s next?

How about you do a DLC Royal Rumble. Now there are a total of 24 DLC wrestlers but the rumble should also include AJ Styles, Carmello Hayes, Erik, Ivar, Julius and Brutus Creed since they are all apart of tag teams that are DLC.
