Ricoh GR III | Video quality any good?

I'd like to note there's a part of the GRIII video option that may be overlooked: You can do the same B&W Hi settings on video that you can on photos. So all the gritty contrasty things that make the GRIII untouched in stills, along with the same lens, can now be used in "moving pictures." I view it as a highly artistic and unique filming tool. The DSLR, GoPro, and high-end phone videos are ubiquitous. The art is primarily in the content, framing, and cutting. This could be a cool option for unique shots. I am going to be using it exclusively on a music video soon for a somber, dissonant, and reflective song. Full disclosure, I haven't used any footage yet, but just played around with it and verified the still settings are available for the video, too. I think it may create some really awesome clips. (And who wants fixed 28mm for normal filming anyways? It's niche for stills, niche for videos... the Ricoh way!)

Yeah!!!! This is an interesting camera to use for its limitations. I think you could get some very interesting shots from it. Definitely not an all purpose thing. But an interesting choice from a 'constraints lead to interesting work' viewpoint, because the image it makes has a certain quality.

The shot with the plants actually look really filmic. COnvinced me to try it out. The review itself was so limited and probably the laziest form of testing but it still helped me.

Yeah try it out. I know the review was limited and not very good. I will do another one that is better. It won’t be a really technical, but I will surely include more clips.

@ I have the Fuji XF10 and while it's not very good at video overall liek the Ricoh, it has its niche cases where it outperforms every smartphone. Especially when it comes to low light. I just wish they had enabled to webcam feature on the XF10. That would've made it perfect for me.

It's too bad they didn't give it 4k. Maybe that would have helped the quality. Because it does have an aps-c sized sensor with phenomenal colors. So in theory it should be able to take some decent video.

Yeah maybe, I think they should be able to produce even great full HD. And for me that would have been enough. If they could get video as good as the images the camera is producing that would be awesome. Maybe we will see it in the next iteration of Ricoh cameras.

the aps c sensor on the ricoh is huge compared to a phone,. In my opinion theoretically anyway, the ricoh should capture more lifelike colors and light in videos compared to any phone

Agree in that theory if you look at the sensor size. But modern phones has alot of processing power och does much computing to make up for sensor size. But I still believe that Ricoh should have been able to pull of something better in terms of video than what Ricoh GR III currently has.

Haven't tried that, but working on a version 2 of this video so can see if I can include a test for that.

I have a a GR3 , but have never shot video, so give your posting a look, your test samples seemed very limited and all indoors and close up…my iphone takes great video so you are probably right in your conclusion, but , not sure this was a fair comparison?

Absolutely your are right that my samples aren’t that many. But if you checked out Mattias video that I linked you will see some more clips that are shot outside. But I will make a follow up video with more sample clips!

His samples were flickering like a fluorescent bulb. And the noise was extreme. If they go go 4k and partner with a knowledgable video manufacturer like Black Magic or RED it would be a great story. Keep dreamin'.

That will never happened. They should just keep it as a photography camera in my opinion.

I took my Ricoh travelling with me and took a lot of videos, was so disappointed:( but the photography was great

Video is lacking if you aren’t going for that type of look. But as a photography camera it is great!

Simple answer is yes. I would choose an iPhone over the Ricoh GR III everyday of the week when talking about video quality. If we where to talk about image quality than I would choose the Ricoh GR III over the iPhone everyday of the week.

@ Thanks for the answer. I am really interested in gr3 because it is one of the few true pocket camera that has aps-c in it with no lens cap. But is that because the lack of control? How was dynamic range and detail, distortion? After all, it has bigger sensor.

@@gmuk101 When it comes to video mode on the Ricoh GR III, you don't have any video centric controls. It's only 1080p and the video quality isn't good. Dynamic range isn't really good, the same for detail. You will also see flicker in the fine details. But this is only applied to the video mode. When it comes to the photography, its totally different. There you have great control over your final image. Great dynamic range and detail. The image really sharp. Just an overall awesome camera in photography mode.
