This is both a boring and exciting release. Boring because it’s just a Ricoh GRiii with a longer lens. And exciting because it’s a Ricoh GRiii.. with a longer lens! I have been shooting with the 28mm equivalent GRiii for +2.5 years, so I feel I could at least give my thoughts on the new 40mm equivalent Ricoh GRiiix. Even though it’s not a full review.

@@SoldierOfGod81 I prefer the GRiii because its a more useful focal length. When I bought the GRiiix I dint use it as much. And its to much money to just sit. But give it ago, buy used and you get your money back if you change your mind.

I have a GRIII and thought that it would be impossible to improve on, then Ricoh bought out the GRIIIX, yet again I was proved wrong. The GRIIIX is incredible, the new focal length and crop modes are amazing. I ended up buying the 'X' partly because I am a massive fan of the GR cameras and partly because the 'X' compliments the GRIII and my Fuji X100S perfectly, and yes, I do carry three cameras about with me 😆

Just ordered GR III after announcement of GRIIIx. I’m big fan of 28mm and will be subtle companion to my Q2. Anyway 50mm folks will definitely appreciate 40mm on new GRIIIx.

Would love to pick up a GR II or IIIx one day. I think I’m still scarred from when the lens got stuck on my first GR. Even with lots of TLC and no drops, it seems they’re not built to last. That lens mechanism needing to go in and out is a weak point 😢

Thanks for the video Mattias, I got my GRiiiX 3 days ago and it doesn't disappoint, I've been using the GRii for 4-5 years and was considering getting a GRiii Street but then the GRiiiX was launched last month, I immediately put my order in. The snap focus set at 5m and f5.6 works really well. The GR series of cameras are by the best for street photography, imho.

It's cool to see them branching out. I have been using the X-70 for the past couple of years, and I'm still not loving the experience of shooting 28mm equivalent for various reasons. I don't really like the output of Fujifilm, so this would be a great upgrade if I didn't exclusively shoot street from the waist with the screen flipped up, and my gf didn't require it to check her hair before travel selfies. The Canon M200 with the 22f2 fits most of my user needs, but the snap focus and custom presets look too good to pass up.

Hello Mattias, great video as always! Always a fan of Ricoh/ Pentax products. Anyways, would you be able to do a review of the Panasonic DMC-L1?? It’s the only rangefinder style DSLR i know. It also has full manual dials like the Fujis. But unlike the newer Fujis, the L1 was released back in 2007!

I'll have to heavily disagree on 28mm being the best focal length, at least when it comes to me, it's all subjective of course. 40mm equivalent is about as wide as I'm willing to shoot while out and about in the towns if there are people involved. I'm an introvert, I don't mind talking to people, but I'm not very good with strangers, so not having to shove a camera in their face allows me to shoot without as much discomfort. I like to catch people working in workshops, food stalls, etc and capture their expression and focus. Doing so up close is annoying for them and not the easiest thing for me to do. The GR IIIx gave me a Ricoh I could actually use, and I was so happy when they announced it. Maybe it'll replace my GM1 or GX850 with 20mm pancake lens once I find a used one for a decent price. TBH, my usual kit consists of 2 primes, the Sigma 1.4 30 and 56mm, and 1 zoom, the Pana Leica 2.8-4 12-60mm. That last lens gives away that I'm a MFT shooter, so the Sigmas are really 60 and 112 equivalents and the zoom 24-120. Prior to the SIgmas I used the Pana 25mm and 42.5mm so the 30mm Sigma is a happy medium for me that lets me be close without actually being close. The PL 12-60 is my goto for most street days on my Oly EM-1 Mark II and a GX85 with the Pana 20mm or Sigma 30mm in my bag. With the others sometimes brought along if I need the faster aperture, the MFT lenses are fairly small (Sigmas are APS-C based adapted, but they're not too big).

@Matt Burling - a gate way fix to understand a 28mm is the best all around lens? No :-). Not me! My deal breaker with the Ricoh GR/GRII has been precisely a 28mm equivalent FOV. Thats not me and trust me, I have tried it. It taught me how to shoot wide but that's not what I do. The GRIIIx sure seems in line with a camera I specced like 5 years ago I wish they did. And here it is :-)

Thanks Matthias! Excellent points in this video, especially about it being a gateway camera. It has only taken me a few weeks with my grii to realise that 28mm lens with crops to 35mm and 50mm (or beyond) is sensible for most people. Although I use 28 seldom enough that I'd be fine with 35mm equivalent if they made one, the 28 comes in really handy of you use a 35mm optical viewfinder (as I do) and mess up close range composition occasionally. I hope this sells really well. I'll probably wait for a griv with flash (hopefully) and Leica style raw file crops that can be uncropped in Lightroom (hopefully) as that would be nearly perfect. But might be tempted by one of these if Ricoh release a small enough ttl and manual flash like the cute fuji 20.

@@Raist3db that was my point though; neither am I. But if you want to use an ovf with a 35-40mm Ricoh GRIII or IIIx, having some room to crop is very useful...although it's laborious having to crop everything in post; that's why it would be perfect to have raw crop files handle like the Leica q2, i.e. you can uncrop them. The 28mm is also useful for some up-close (ish) wide-effect landscapes or indoors in tight spaces. I've been thinking more and more about a perfect photographer's compact, and I think a pocketable Leica q2/gr iii type camera is an answer, with a 28mm lens that has usable crops. Ricoh grs do this as well really, with very sharp lens and no aa filter helping the crops tremendously. I can use Topaz upscaling on 50mm+ f2.8 portrait crops on the GRII if I need a larger print and they look very sharp and generally great.

What do you think if Fuji combines the XF10 & X70 design: Tilting screen, Hot Shoe, PASM dial, Pop-up EVF, Aperture+Control Ring (or just a control ring)... The X70 is not bigger than XF70... They are all pretty compact (yes the X100V slightly bigger, but not that much in my opinion).

I loved the GRII. I was very underwhelmed by the GRIII, I even bought it a second time earlier this year only to be disappointed a second time. I want to be excited about this, this is the focal length I’ve wanted for a long time. But lets be honest, as much as they say it does, the GRIII does not have phase detection focus; maybe it does physically, but the speed at which it focuses is not that of a camera with phase detection focus. I can’t believe they didn’t fix that with this one. I’m not expecting a sports camera, but it seriously focuses the same as the GRII. Which can be found for half the price.

@@gearreallydoesntmatter Fair enough, but with that in mind can we agree that the GRII is a much better value than the third one, as the third one is only bringing to the table (if excluding the upgraded AF) a somewhat stabilized sensor and more megapixels. Not to discount those two things, but I don’t believe it justifies the third one being twice the price of the second.

No we can’t agree on that. I say they are both great value in their own way. The GRii has a flash for example. In my review of the GRiii I list I think 7 improvements of the GRiii that I find very useful. Can’t remember which I listed and there are more. So buy the one you can afford, as always, you get what you pay for.

A simple spreadsheet - indeed, experience - does the job. With the apps, however, there's always juuuust something - like with camers - about the presentation, inputs, graphics, but for which they would otherwise be perfect!! ;)

Some people just happen to enjoy the focal length more than a 28mm. There is no such thing as a "best all-around focal length" because we all shoot differently. It's a bit condescending to say that we just haven't understood that 28 is what good photographers use. I recently bought a Leica with a fixed 28mm lens and disliked the range so much that I sold it, and that's because it didn't suit my style of street photography.

If they could somehow make the lens fixed rather than retracting, even if it adds a bit more heft, the GR line would be perfect. I’m always worried about the mechanism tiring out or just dying. There’s also the well lamented dust issue. It’ll also lend it self to being a bit more rugged on hikes, bike trips and wet days. And finally, a couple centimetres in thickness could make way for a bigger battery. Not too fussed about the tilt screen though. Maybe a GR 3 Rugged Edition 😎

It’s apsc, just half the focal length of the lens and add it on, eg 20mm becomes 30mm

Just curious what you mean when you say 'the much faster Nikon Zfc' - The Zfc is also a crop sensor, same as GR IIIX and X-E4, and the Zfc's 28mm is also an f2.8 (same as the Fuji 27mm) and the GR IIIX. Or am I misunderstanding?

Its the same exact zone focus as the GRiii, just pick a distance or set in manually. You can post process on a smartphone, raw files as well. Like all Ricohs. Yes, I don’t like the rx100 all that much.

I picked up a GR II for around $400 on OfferUp in 2020, fell in love with it and after 11 or so months with it ended up bumping up to the GR III. I found the newer sensor handles low light grain a lot better (I would typically shoot in bnw in night scenes), but the GR III obviously misses the flash. I'd say go for a well priced GR II and see how it works for you!

Shooting with a single press of the shutter release button (Full Press Snap) only works when you set shutter customization to AF+AE Lock. Is this a bug? Does your iiix have this problem?

I returned my ricoh gr iii. It's super cool, but I want it as am everyday camera/family camera. The auto focus, especially inside, just didn't do it for tracking a little kid. Even snap focusing was tough, for me anyway.

Snap will always be faster than any tracking AF you can find. Just needy to practice using it.

Not my focal length ... actual 35mm is optimal, wider 28mm with good resolution works fine and you get to crop ... anything tighter than 35 and I lose creative focus, on occasion I love to use a 50mm on the go with a DLSR, but 40mm is just not versatile enough for the way I love to shoot with a fixed lens.

We are all different. For me 35mm is just bland. Not a wide story teller like 28, nor as versatile as a 50mm.

@@gearreallydoesntmatter My 'go to' lens was always the 28mm. I tried to convince myself that 35mm was best all round, 2 steps back for a 28mm and 2 forward for a 40mm. Of course you can't always do that, and it simply doesn't feel the same in your hand and to your eye. Way back in the day (I'm really old) I had a 28-50 on my 'golden era' Pentax slr. I only ever went directly from 28 to 50 and nothing in between, but 28mm was and is still 'it' for me. Thanks for the channel appreciate your time.

Bummer. They announced it, gave it to some legit KZbinrs, but they can't ship them to customers. Global parts shortage is hitting everyone, not much to be done about it. But it's hard to see cool products being announced that can't be delivered to market.

Honestly I wish that lens was fixed and not retractable. That's the weak point on every camera that uses such a design. Needs to be like an X100. I'd buy one in a minute if they fixed that flaw. I don't care about a few inches of thickness.

One of the key aspects of this camera is that it’s APS-C and pocketable. They aren’t going to change that any time soon. Plenty of non pocketable or small sensored cameras out there already. No point in trying to compete with them.

@@gearreallydoesntmatter ok, I understand your point, but why don't you consider small canon cams, m200 for example, it can be used with fast 22mm lense. Is it all about build quality?

Its much bigger, no ibis but most of all not a leaf shutter. And obviously the optical quality of the lens is much much worse. If Ricoh made such compromises they might as well make it an interchangeable lens camera. And then they’ve lost the successful concept altogether. I’ve had the M with the 22mm, it’s nice.

@@BecaTosha good luck fitting that into a pocket! The point of the GR is to be an every day carry camera with great image quality that you bring with you even when you don't plan on shooting.

I also noticed the high price, like all new products from Ricoh/Pentax (K-3lll, D-FA21mm lens, etc.). it seems to me that Ricoh wants to find out what high prices people are willing to pay for their products. I also don't understand why the GRlllx is more expensive than the GRlll.

No EVF! How do you compose in bright sunlight? An expensive and dated cult camera for GR addicts. Give me a Lumix LX100ii any day.

The LX100ii is to slow for my taste. No issues in the sun for me, I just shoot like normal.

The LX100ii looks great, but does it fit in your trouser pocket every day so that you are happy to take it with you everywhere? Unlike most of the Sony RX100s and Canon GXs, Ricoh GRs have a hotshoe that you can use for an optical viewfinder. After some trial and error, I am getting very good with 'pinpoint af', i.e. the smallest possible centre spot af point, and you can then see the scene pretty much like an slr with a few caveats regarding focus and composition. The focusing can be solved by either checking the LCD or snap focus, and the composition can be fixed with practice, and/or using a tighter crop viewfinder.
