Mattias, this is by far the best review on the two cameras. I am waiting for the Ricoh GR 3 and praying it comes with a flip-out screen and solution to sensor dust issues. I wouldn't mind if they added a few grams for the feature. Meanwhile, I'm thoroughly enjoying my GR limited edition green... Cheers from Seoul.

@@ThorenTravels The X70 is as pocketable, i prefer the controls probably as i also have other Fujifilm cameras so it's more intuitive for me. Love the images i get. Plus it has the tilting screen for low down shots, feels a more solid build. That's just my preference, the GR is still a very good camera.

As always....a great review Mattias !! It has become even more difficult to decide. :) Recently, I did try a Fuji X70. It was nice and small but I wished for more grip - in that comparison holding the X-Pro2 and X100F were much more satisfying and reassuring. Fuji's vintage look takes the cake design wise, but the Ricoh is very unassuming in that department. Have never held one in hand as Ricoh doesn't sell cameras in the UAE but the grip definitely looks ample.
@7775Kevin7 жыл бұрын
Vishal Kanjani I have had a fuji x70 and liked it very much. (Eventually I will get another one). I now have the GR II and the size and weight combined with the very well designed rubbery grip make it easier to carry and shoot with than the x70. Again they are both great cameras but you would definitely like the grip on the little Ricoh and the images are fantastic.

Agree with Capture One for the GR files. With LR, I was pretty much coveting them all the B&W (which look great from the GR). And a note about the pocketability: it does fit in my back jeans pocket, which is fantastic, but taking it in and out does cause some extra wear and tear on the camera.

Excellent review, and having owned both, I also stuck with the GRii and have no regrets. Yes, the flip screen is nice, but the GRii is lighter, fits into any pocket, and can be operated one-handed. I also think the lens is a little sharper than that on the X70. But they are both great cameras and either one is a good choice.

As you know, I LOVE my GR and only wish I could bold "LOVE" in these comments :) I've always been frustrated with the manual focus!!! Only after watching your video did I see the trick of HOLDING DOWN the AFL button then changing focus with one's finger on the front dial! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Now I don't have a single complaint and would need double-bold. On what you believe is "the higher stop" you can get with the X70. The GR has a setting called "Dynamic Range Compensation" which can be set from: Off, Auto, Weak, Medium, and Strong. It works very well. I thought it would only effect JPG but it seems to flatten out the DR in the DNG file. When I feel I'm going to use it I set it to the "Effect" button. Very useful for landscape type photography. Anyway, GREAT VIDEO as always!!!! I'm been wanting to get a portable flash for this camera but can't make up my mind from what I read. Maybe you can figure it out!

Hey hey! Mattias! I am surprised. I (slightly) trolled your previous X70 videos a tiny bit suggesting the Ricoh, and I thought you loved the X70 so much you wouldn't quite "come over". But it won you over eh? :D There's no question they are both absolutely stellar cameras, but it's awesome to see you landed exactly where I did and appreciate the GRII for all the right reasons. I think your summation of the two is excellent - the Ricoh being a perfect "complimentary" camera, and the X70 being a perfect "one" camera. Great in depth reviews on both as usual. End of 2020 I bought a Ricoh GR II and loved it. For some reason I sold it and ended up replacing it with a Fujifilm X70 in 2021 which I still have. Both are awesome cameras! I wear slightly baggier clothes now so the X70 fits in my pocket haha, whereas previously only the Ricoh had that advantage. The flippy screen is definitely a massive advantage, and I gotta admit I've been a Fuji boy since the X100 (with the X-T3 as my other camera) so the X70 is here to stay, especially with its retro looks. Looking back through photos I've taken, both had keepers that I love and gave me those nice feels. Now I'm tempted to look at the Leica Q2, although I'd need even baggier clothes to put it in my pocket..

If the X100T had a tilt screen it would be a perfect camera tbh. The next GR should have one as well, it's just so much more convenient for low angle shots, I shoot a lot of shots of cats and dogs and it's hard to compose shots like that without a tilt screen.

I own neither but both are on my wishlist.I will probably go with the GR but found this comment on Amazon about the X70 having snap focus hidden in the menu. "Lastly GR owners might think that there is no Snap Focus on the X70 but Fuji has hidden their version within the manual settings. Select the manual switch, choose your focal snap length via the display bar and bang the camera focuses to the distance instantly, exactly the same as the GR. When you switch back to auto focus mode it keeps you last manual settings saved so when you need to go back to snap, select manual and your settings are there straight away." Just thought it might be helpful.
@gearreallydoesntmatter7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I said and showed it in the video :) But as soon as you use tha AF you have to manualy reset it again. And there is no full press snap. So in short, no, there is no "snap" in the X70 :)

My combination of a good camera and my personal composition, is what makes me not need post processing. As a matter of fact, I try to shoot as I used to with my film Nikon and Minoltas. When there was not post processing, and your skill was what counted. (yes, call me old fashined) My very respectful opinion!
@gearreallydoesntmatter5 жыл бұрын
I disagree on one point. That doing post some how makes a shooter less skilled.. that goes against everything photography stands for in my opinion. With that logic I could say you just let the camera do the work for you and no skill is required. Or that changing the settings, use a flash, switch lenses is all just lack of skill. All great film photographers did A LOT of post.

Thanks for the great info! I was heavily leaning towards Fujifilm (preferring the retro look and dials for everything), but the size, portability, and ergonomics of the Ricoh seems like it would fit my needs as a light and packable "go everywhere" camera better (and a friend of mine has one, loves it, and is upgrading to the GR III so I might pick it up off him at a good price). Truly a shame that the Lightroom standard profile for Ricoh RAW files isn't better though (and that the film simulations aren't available as profiles). I use Lightroom for all of my DSLR RAW files and would prefer not to have to invest in a second editor just to be able to get the best out of these pictures. Good to know before investing in one though.

Awesome video. After a lot of reviewing I came down to the Fuji X series and Ricoh GR models. I'm brand new to photography and think both are good entry points for a beginner. I heard there is a new Ricoh GR model coming out later this year so I decided not to get the GR II. I went with the Fuji X100 S with extras on the used market and I'm waiting on delivery. I also can find the older Ricoh GR 10.1MP for under $200 which I plan to buy next month. Both cameras will cost me approx $700 total. I want to use both to compare and play with and then flip for new models down the road once I know what I prefer. Is this a crazy plan? I almost got the X70 new but I figured my current plan will get me the X100S and the older GR for the same price. Anyway I hope to learn more from your website as my new hobby takes off.

Great review for a great camera. Definitely try CP pro for color editing as I agree what was said about light room. Question, what lens are you using on your sigma? I have one as well and am very curious as to the lens options for that beautiful tool.

Cool, my goto lens is the standard 30mm f1.4. But then I use all kinds of vintage M42 and Kiev lenses. I just got the camera so I haven't had the opportunity to test that much yet. But I will most definitely make a video about it in the near future.

Mattias Burling thank you very. Looking forward to that video for that's another great camera I feel that despite its critics, is a tool in the right hands. Thank you again.

Agreed, it totaly saved my butt today on a pro gig when there was a problem with our Nikon lenses. The Sigma stepped in and killed it :)

Mattias Burling indeed. For portraits, landscapes as well product/studio work, that camers really shines with great picture quality, almost MF grade. Have you ever experiment with the GR's leaf shutter for some high speed sync photography? Though not ideal at 28mm it's nice to see how some are able to do some environmental portraiture work utilizing high speed sync flash.

I have but its a shame it cant go full speed wide open like the x70.

Your videos are really inspiring =) thx and I hope that Ricoh GR III comes to light at Photokina 2018 (26, Sept.) If not, what camera do you recommend: Ricoh GR II or Fujifilm XF10? ...XF10 its a nice option considering price and 24MP.

I would rather have the GRii and even the X70 over the XF10.

Hey Mattias, as always a fantastic video but I love my X70, the articulated sceen wins it for me and it has seriously become my camera of choice, the colour options are excellent and I bought this camera through your initial review of the X70 s And haven't regretted it, I also use the fuji s 1 bridge camera for distance work but it's not as flexible as the X70 sensor is smaller, so the quality is not as good. I know the GR is a great camera but I'm am surprised that it doesn't have similar function as the fuji considering it is its closest rival. Keep up the good work my freind.

Is the old GR good enough if I find a good deal on it? Will most of the positives still apply? From what I've read, there isn't much of an upgrade from the mark 1 to the mark 2 GR.

Dobrovolschi Eduard Its good enough imo.

What about dust sensor on the Ricoh GR II ?? because i saw in some Forums, and found out that many issues on that... could it be the down side on Ricoh? or it also happened in x70?
@gearreallydoesntmatter7 жыл бұрын
I talk about it and give my opinion in the video.

I really want a GR. BUT the biggest downside to me. Ricoh gr have an issue stuck lens. Many ricoh gr in here got stuck lens and cant used it again. And for repair we must pay $300..its considering me to buy x70 with no mechanical lens power on off for longlife
@gearreallydoesntmatter6 жыл бұрын
the x70 also ha a retracting lens.

To me the best features in the Ricoh GR is, I can turn off the LCD to shoot!
@andreika66815 жыл бұрын
yup, on x70 you have to put display into 'image info' mode to make it dark and not showing what you're shooting. black screen would be better
