Fun facts: 1 .King T'Chaka is a South African actor and the person who played the young King T'Chaka is actually his son. 2. The language they speak is Xhosa one of SA's 11 official languages. 3. The spear and shield Chadwick used in the fight for king are Zulu weapons. 4. Some of the songs they played in the background when they were in Shuri's lab is Amapiano, a music genre only found in South Africa. 5. Some of the scenes in wakanda were shot in Golden Gate Highland National Park in the Free state province. 6. Four SA actors were in the film, including Trevor Noah. I loved my country's representation in this movie and Africa as a whole.

I physically went to the theater 5x's to see this. As a black guy, as well as a black kid into comics. We always had to imagine behind all the masks were black guys. Blade & Black Panther meant a lot to the kid inside me. With this though, Ryan Coogler understood what & how the dilema we face, as black men, feels. Killmonger & T'challa are 2 sides of the same coin. A duality of personal conflicts in many men, specifically displaced Descendants from African countries. Personally, this movie always brings emotion. Especially Killmomgers' last dialogue. Btw, I'm 49.

To me this is the best MCU film...and I'm not black. Chadwick and Michael B Jordan brought that power. I also liked the difference in perspective between Wakanda and Killmonger. I really believe this movie is about the transformation of Wakanda. The three scenes in the ancestral realm really highlight the trajectory: Reverence of Wakanda followed by the issue and then the utter denial. Great film.

it was nice to also, get a futurized version of things that actually have an African or tribal feel to them. we constantly get either a grungy future punk aesthetic or a minimalist, mute, and overall sterile look to things. the closer you get to bigger cities the more obscure the customs and cultural sense of things become. and sure countries try to change that with some them of nationalism where the flag of said country is worked into clothing. but rarely is it something that has a big cultural significance. but in this film, we see the styles of the tribes and for once it's not portrayed as something primitive.

As someone who is both native American (Choctaw) and Irish, I believe that we should learn our history and embrace it (at least as far as is morally right). I love the richness and vibrance of various cultures and hate the idea of all of that culture being lost to the pages of history.

@@Aliensdontwearsocks exactly. there is a sense of legacy in culture. in Virginia I've seen my fair number of civil war renacments. but it would be nice if we had something like that for people of distinct cultures. how much richer would history and diversity be if we got to see what made us different and where we are similar. look at greek Tragedies along with their pantheon of gods. Ask most people in the world if they know who Zeus is and they'll say yes to a certain extent but what do we know about the the cultures of the native Americans?! the fact that they were confused with people from India for so long is criminal. now I'm trying to imagine how badass futuristic native American would have shaped the landscape and how it would also be reflected in their clothing and jewelry.

@@aristothethrone9032 My grandfather traced our genealogy back to the 1100's. I have royals and rebels, chieftains and outlaws all represented in my blood. It's strange to think of but I wonder how it impacts my thought processes and such. I'm also 4th generation military and very much believe in a smaller govt and more individual freedoms. I wonder how much of that fiercely independent streak came from my forbears. I once asked my dad why he never claimed any of the money available to him through the tribe and he said "I don't deserve any special breaks just for being born". That always stuck with me and is something that I've strived to pass on to my kids as part of their mindset. Understanding the legacy and (more importantly) the mindset of the men and women who came before us can give us a much deeper understanding of ourselves

The scarring killmonger has is an actual practice for boys becoming men in a specific African tribe (I forget it’s name) To create those bumps you cut yourself and then flood the wound with cold water so that it rises and swells and heals like that.

@@witdajuice6763 Not just in Africa, I think. Ritual scarification, or, as one might think of it, the deliberate cultivation of scar tissue, occurs in a lot of cultures. It makes sense, as it's a method of permanently marking the body that is relatively safe, doesn't compromise function, and can be done with minimal tech and materials.

Idk if you guys remember but Klaue is the one who provided Ultron with the vibranium he needed to make a new body and Vision (in Age of Ultron). In that same scene Ultron cut off Klaue’s arm bc he said Ultron reminded him of Tony stark. That’s why Klaue has that vibranium prosthetic/canon on his arm in this movie

I hate it when people refer to DEVELOPING countries as third-world. Its's such an outdated relic term for dehumanising countries with developing economies and living standards. It's a very, very old colonial term to put western developed countries on a higher plateau. For more than 25 years since I discovered the term 'third-world' I've been trying to tell others rationally why 'T-W Country' is an incorrect term.

On the topic of Killmonger not doing anything wrong, he is complex man but there is enough there to give us villain-esque attributes: a) For starters, destroying any scope for succession/having no Wakandan succession plan by burning all of the herb was silly - at the very least shows disdain for the traditions he so vehemently wants to be a part of. b) Even his "let's arm the War Dogs" plan was downright baseless in terms of geography - like Hong Kong which is hardly an outpost of black oppression ever and particularly not now, was one of the first targets. He's a phenomenal character but I genuinely think there are limits to supporting his agenda that are often ignored.

Aside from his murder of innocent people at the museum, the notion that black people are one group who would use the weapons against their 'oppressors' in reality there's lots of black people who would love nothing more than to use high-tech weapons on other black people. But even after all that he makes you feel sorry for him. Of course when I first heard he was playing the villain in Black Panther I only knew him as 'Wallace' from 'The Wire' and I just kept on thinking 'Don't hurt him, he doesn't know what he's doing'. I'm still devoted to Michael B Jordan of course but Chadwick definitely won my heart throughout the movie.

To be fair, I think part of what makes a villain a villain is that even if their motives are good, their plan is flawed and the ends don't justify the means. Like Thanos cutting the population in half instead of doubling the resources. But you're right, he's still an amazing character.

Can we even say he's wrong? Given the tremendous, acute, and ongoing oppression and injustice he's attempting to stop, very hard to say that almost any method isn't justified. Very deliberate MLK v X vibes here, as was also done in the Xavier v Magneto debate in X-Men. When Killmonger was giving his speech about giving the racialized oppressed weapons that they might kill and overthrow those in power, all I could think was, "Well, fair enough, really". As you sow, so must you expect to reap. And, frankly, how likely is it that the new rulers would do a worse job than the old? Not to bring in bitter reality, but we're 8 years at the outside from locking-in a climate regime that will, in all likelihood, shred our society to the base of the concept, and that's just one of several ongoing, accelerating, and, increasingly, mutually-supporting existential crises for human civilization as we know it. Have you seen "Don't Look Up"? If anything, it describes a rosier situation than our current one, and treats it with an over-abundance of optimism. Further explanation available upon request, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're trying to have a peaceful day.

This was a good film indeed. I can't watch this and not cry at the ancestral plane scene because it always reminds me of a dream I had with my late grandfather visiting me from Heaven. I told him how sorry I was for not being there to say goodbye, but he simply smiled and hugged me while telling me that he'll always love and watch me no matter what. I watched him walk up the stairs to Heaven before waking up with tears rolling down my face. When I heard Chadwick passed away, it took me a bit to process. He will always be, to me, the true king of Wakanda and the one true Black Panther. I hope for the next Black Panther film, they will do all they can to honor Chadwick's memory. WAKANDA FOREVER!

Killmonger is totally a villain and a bad person... He's not entirely unjustified, which makes him an interesting and cool villain, but he's pretty clearly motivated by spite, revenge and possibly a bit of a lust for power too... I mean, why else would he try to make it so no one could challenge him later? He used their challenge system as a way to get into power, but if he were truly honourable, why wouldn't he then be happy to take T'challa's challenge when he returned? He didn't have to necessarily, but arguably that would be the honourable thing to do... Plus he beat him once already... To be fair though, it might be smart of him not to engage him if he didn't have to... But yeah, he's a good character, but a bad person... And even worse if, as it seems, he was specifically planning to make black people the oppressors, rather than just fix the balance... I mean it's potentially only a few steps away from white people being the new jews in Nazi Germany... Extreme methods are almost entirely bad things... Whether he was right about the world (or not) is a debate for another time, but I don't think that needs to be true or false to show that Killmonger is a bad person and a villain... I sympathise, sure... There are racial injustices in many places around the world... It's strong motivation... He's had to deal with the death of his father at a young age... I feel bad for him and those he is potentially championing... But any good intentions he has are outweighed by the bad ones and his extreme methods of dealing with it... That said, another great thing about him as a villain, is that he helped the hero become a better person, who plans to make stuff better for more people.

The reason why I personally think killmonger is a villain while at the same time a victim is his intent, his intent to spread war and bloodshed throughout the world was evil ( had to clarify due to people here with smooth brains ). However he isn’t a bad guy in that aspect as he’s reasons are vaild, based on everything he experienced, still a bad boy for feeling angry and vengeful, But this move was very much humanized in many scenes which made it feel different and more personal to people, very well made movie with a fantastic cast and fantastic character development and scenery to add. As a side note Chadwick will never be dead as long as people remember and enjoy his works as an actor and as a person, he is BLACK PANTHER now and forever

And if I'm not mistaken the mask Killmonger picked up was the tribe of people that he was referencing who jumped off the ship when they were sent to slavery. You guys stressed it, but it is extremely rare to have a story in which there is no villain. KM's story is relatable on many levels, especially considering racial injustices common in America. He had no path to the throne unless it was forged by his own hand. And he presented himself with honor and respect when he finally got there (all things considered). His methods were problematic, but the message behind it was not invalid. This movie truly showed the meaning of having heroes.

T'challa & Killmonger are basically a comic book characterization of Martin Luther King & Malcolm X. Story creator Stan Lee saw first hand the inception of the civil rights movement from the 50's through the 70's and intentionally wove it into the fabric of the comics. Who's bad, who's good? This movie is a masterclass discussion on skin folk vs. kin folk, and tradition vs. progression. It was so wonderfully executed that I, as a black person, couldn’t even find fault in Killmonger’s beliefs. His methods were certainly more radical and violent but even that makes sense when you know the history of the treatment of black people all over the world. This movie means so much to me and was so wonderfully done. RIP to Chadwick and I thank him for such an amazing job in such a moving movie.

The only fault I found in killmonger was his blatant disrespect for the culture and traditions, and the extent to which he aimed to move. Effectively replacing the current overlords isn’t a solution; he wanted vengeance, not justice.

The thing I feel Killmonger did wrong was not to learn or understand the Wakanda culture at all. He had no perception of the risk to Wakanda as a sole source of Vibranium becoming a target for all other nations to want to take control of. To create a global ‘higher level of warfare’ is an awful ideology I find hard to stomach. I do understand that someone who’s only ever seen conflict to get what you want as the way to behave but more people behaving that way is not going to improve things at all. Conflict just creates more oppressed people. I definitely prefer the Tchalla diplomacy model

I vividly remember the first time I realized how important representation was in film. I went to see The Force Awakens in IMAX. Got out of it at the same time a showing of Concussion in the next theater, a movie that received mediocre reception. But I saw nothing but black people, including older ones in pretty nice clothes, coming out of Concussion. Then this movie comes out, and all of my black friends, even ones who weren't fans of Marvel or superhero movies in general, posting about going to see it, some dressed in traditional African garb. I love comic books and support hero movies, and I love every opportunity to talk to others about it. More representation like this means more people to geek out with, and I'm all for it.

I think killmonger is one of the better villains in the MCU, but he definitely is a villain and I can't really see him any other way. He says he only wants power to free his people who are oppressed, but there are so many instances where he proves he wants to rule wakanda and every other nation, the entire world and oppress everyone that could have oppressed his people or sided with T'Chala... Burning all the herbs so no one could compete with him ever meant he didnt care about wakanda at all, just the power and tools it gave him to take over the world.

Have you heard about Shuri's actor? Appearently Letitia Wright refuses to get vaccinated and spreads false information on the set and makes the production of Black Panther 2 very difficult. Many people speculate now if they gonna fire her. I don't wanna be insulting, but it's kinda sad that the actress of the currently smartest person in the MCU seems to be so foolish and irresponsible. I think it would be better to re-cast her if she keeps refusing to get vaccinated and I doubt that anyone would mind at this point.

There are portions of Killmonger's plan that utterly baffle me. What if someone darted him with the fluid that robs the Panther powers? He'd have no herb to fall back on. Who was supposed to carry on after him with no Panther? There are so many reasons destroying the heart-shaped herb is a bad fucking idea.

The whole premise of this movie DOESNT MAKE SENSE ... - so Wakanda has super-advanced technology (which they didnt have "since yesterday") ... and the rest of Africa is PRIMITIVE, because Wakandans DONT LIKE TO SHARE (very obviously) - what is the point of "farming rhinos"? and: how are the "stick fences" going to keep a rhino from breaking out? [look up "rhino milk" and its memes] - how did the first Wakandans manage to PROCESS VIBRANIUM ... when they didnt develop any smelting or so? Let me guess: cheat codes from the writers? Its a movie based on a comic book, none of the Marvel movies actually make sense. So, you're observation that the reason Wakanda didn't share resources was because they just didn't want to is not accurate. It is made clear that the decision to isolate was made to protect Wakanda. The primary goal of colonization is to extract resources in a foreign land and send them back to a home land. Whether that is people, precious metals, crops, or any other resource, the main goal of a nation authorizing a colonial mission, which is very expensive, is the potential profit of the mission. Had Wakanda freely shared their knowledge and vibranium with near by tribes or outsiders, there is a legitimate risk of war over access to resources on their own land. The central theme of the movie is actually whether this is a justifiable reason for isolating a nation. If you are unable to grasp this core idea, you shouldn't be watching movies expecting them to make sense cause this was as simple as the narrative could make it. Rhinos has nothing to do with the premise of the movie at all so I don't know why you would bring it up. Also, you don't 'farm' animals. You domesticate animals. Wakandans would domestic rhinos for the same reason Europeans domesticated cattle, they're productive in some form or fashion. As far as the fence thing goes, once you domesticate an animal, it generally doesn't need to be forcefully prevented from leaving. Historically, cows were able to escape their captivity easily in their origin as a domesticated live stock simply due to the architecture of holding animals being primitive. They were still a main stay of sedentary communities based around agriculture. If cows becoming domesticated isn't nonsensical to you (it shouldn't be since it actually happened), then neither should rhino assuming they were domesticated. Iron metallurgy developed independently in west Africa by at least 550 BC. You might know a bit about processing steel but you're racist for assuming Africans were unable to work with metal. The whole point of vibranium is that it is able to absorb any vibration and is an extremely light weight metal. It can absorb kinetic energy which means the energy released from the impact of a regular meteor striking the earth would be retained in a vibranium meteor. Also, vibranium is generally never used offensively in the comics or MCU. It has been used to facilitate energy used offensively but no one really makes swords of the stuff like that. On the occasion that vibrainum is used to make weapons like knives, its more for the durability of the metal than because it is more capable of inflicting damage than steel or iron (the Antarctic vibrainum being a exception because it can independently melt all other forms of metal which is something Wakandan vibrainum never had the ability to do). A black nation isolating from another black nation is not racist. Its nationalist, sure. However, as I already stated, Wakanda did not isolate because it considered itself superior to its neighbors. It isolated to prevent colonialist from sneaking into the country, or waging a war against the country, to steal their resources and return them to their home land. The goal of Trump's wall and travel bans were never to prevent resource extraction but to preserve resources for those already here. Immigrants are not coming to America to steal our corn and wheat and take them back to South America. Its a slight difference but it still makes the comparison inadequate.
