I really don't like the desaturated look of the shaders they used in the remake, it makes the game look bland and unispired compared to its 2004 counter-part

Ironically, the 2004 Riddick looks more like Riddick. 2009 Riddick looks like Brucie Kibbutz.

I prefer the 2004 version because the original looks darker and gives the game a more darker atmosphere unlike the remastered which just doesn't suit the game.

More scenes than not 2009 does look better than 2004 (if you toggle off post processing effects) however it suffers from some serious issues including, but not limited to: Dark Athena's cheap AI (which can see through seams in objects apparently), Dark Athena's soundtrack bleeding into the game and sounding out of place, a questionable change in the pit level (they removed the need for you to locate the crank to the gate), lack of commentary (which was in the PC Developer's Cut), decals randomly turning off, and some mouse acceleration issues.

AFreakinProblem there is the commentary for pc but you have to install a patch

for me the original 2004, in the new one even the blood on the bodies is missing , the mine monsters look like smiley faces compared to the original , the 2009 graphics are waay worse than the original which for its time was beautiful ..its just lazy and btw dark athena sucks

Classic Butcher Bay was outstanding. No reason to play the Dark Athena release. Honestly I really do think it was the best looking game of 2004 and possibly 2005. The presentation was that good

At 2023, I´ve finished the 2004 version, and now, I´ve playing the 2009 version (Bucher bay yet), I think the 2004 version looks a way better. I´ll finihsing Bucher bay (2009_ version at the begin 2024. I want to play ( I know thats impossible) the Dark Athena on the 2004 engine version. I didnt like the new engine ligh effects. After all, those games are great, even playing at recent dates

When I bought the original years ago, I couldn't play on high settings. It was great, to now, be able to max it out. I own 800 video games and this would make my top 10. I have the pc version. I was able to install it and it run on windows 10. After some googling and work around.

Hi, have you been able to reduce the shimmering in the 2004 Version? Using shader 1.1 reduced shimmering but lightning was reduced somehow. I‘ve tried various Settings with nvidiainspector but was not fully happy.

@Ryan Vetter I had to do something with my mouse settings, I can't remember exactly. I finally got it to run wonderfully. Also got it to run in 2560x1440 to match my monitor. Also had to set something in nvidia settings. Funny I didn't realize I had another copy of Butcher Bay when I bought " Assault on Dark Athena" off of Steam years ago. It came with an upgraded version of Butcher Bay. I still like the older version better.

I just grabbed this game recently and never got the chance to play it on PS2 so I got curious. Honeslty, I think the original graphics are better. The newer graphics look more wet in comparison to the old which looks dryer. (The animations look like clay to me.) Newer also has a little bit more lighting. Don't really care I suppose. Game looks good either way. In the end, all that matters is gameplay, which is phenominal. I am having a blast.

What do you expect from a console port? High res textures and improved shaders won't work on the PS3 or 360. So we get blur-o-vision. It's even so unoptimised for the PC it barely runs on my i3 + 6870, which has over five times the power of the consoles.

Just played through 2009 version. What tf they did to this game? Pros: Better textures on Abbott, Johns and Riddick(arguably) No problems with high DPI mouse Select weapon with a quick select wheel Some new melee combat finishers Cons: Horrible lightning system. If you stay deep in dark place and look towards some light source your eyes are just blown into oblivion. Apparently when you turn on eyesight it looks fine, but you have to go through a quarter of a game without it. And for fucks sake. Did they even do any QA on Cryo Pyramids level? It is so packed with bloom and shit I got headache just from looking at it. As someone mentioned Dark Athena OST overlaps the original one Xenos are downgraded to the ground. Both models and textures. And the adult ones are so weak I though it was a joke. I killed the first one with just grenade and one shotgun shot. And the second one with just 3 shotgun shots no grenade. They also are just blowing up instead of proper death animation, although I don't remember if they have had one in the original.

They ruined the game forever. The remaster is beyond awful. Looks terrible, sometimes you can't see anything. The worst thing is that when people check out the game they always go for the remaster, every single time, then you ask them what they think of it and they all say the same thing. They didn't finish it because it looked so bad and they couldn't see through the blur and bloom. Every single time.
