Windependence Artist Series - Grade 5
Ride is a high-velocity piece inspired by a landscape-blurring car ride down a country road in Pennsylvania. Beginning and ending in the same key to symbolize going from one “home” to another, Ride zooms through harmonic and metric changes in between to take listeners and musicians for a “ride” before building to a furious climax.

Mr. Hazo said this piece was made after he had to follow Jack Stamp to his house. They drove 25 miles in 15 mins. This piece is what that experience felt like for him desperately trying to keep up with Mr. Stamp. LMAO

Played this my sophomore year of high school, and it holds a very special place in my heart. My sophomore year happened to be right in the middle of COVID, so we were only going to school every other day, and our directors weren’t sure if we’d be able to put the piece together in the 3 weeks that we had to do so before our spring concert. But, by some miracle, we did, and the end result was incredible. One of the best performances I’d had throughout high school.

I figured out what makes it so epic. The seamless Retardondo and accelerando, and the fact that part is short compared to the rest of the song so it hits you like a train because you don’t have time to process it’s true EPICNESS. It also sounds like it has no melody even though I’m sure it does.

Played this my senior year. By far the most challenging piece of music I ever did with the high school band. But when everything finally starts coming together, it felt absolutely exhilarating to play this song successfully and accurately!! The looks on the audiences faces was particularly satisfying. This was probably a college level song and we got all superior ratings at our assessments (not really competitions, your simply graded on an individual level). This really would make a great marching band opener!!

its a scorching day in mid august.. You are doing sax sectionals inside and hear the drumline in the distance warming up with their cadences outside. Just a matter of time until you join them outside in that heat to run the opener, Ride. Running the same sets over and over again until exhaustion. sweating through your clothes, heels feeling sore and the words "heel to toe!!", "RESET" and "FROM THE TOP" start to become ingrained in your mind. The days fly by and before you know it the scorching heat has turned into the brisk cool air of an October evening and you find yourself in front of a huge crowd, competing against other bands in Scranton PA.. Drum major are you ready? Band are you ready?..

Not many times that you can say that the bass clarinet part is not only fun, yet a challenge as well

This is one reason why concert band is as good as it is.

I got to play snare for this and that groove at 1:23 was too good, head bop everytime I played it

SteadyRhythms try articulating "da da da da, ga ga ga ga." The "ga" shouldn't be a tongued articulation but rather a "kuh" sound. Then gradually start alternating da's and ga's faster and faster until your double tonguing! The end result should be a fast "dagadaga". It takes TIME so you're not gonna get it right away but it develops muscle memory. Hope this helps

0:00 and 2:10 are my favorite parts. I am playing this song on 3rd trombone this year. Also the end is long loud and painful to my lungs
