Haven't ridden in one since 1970 when I was nine, but all of the interior details are perfectly etched in my memory. Lovely to see this video and experience it all again.

I owned this car about 15 years ago. In my ownership it had a rebuilt engine and gearbox, and a Zephyr 4.44 diff, new cloth seats, unleaded head and rebuilt brakes front to rear, so I am not surprised it is still reliable! It also had two whopping great fog/ spotlights, sadly now gone. It had been resprayed what looked like a 1970s light blue, not two-tone as now is.Original colour was Opal Blue, a rare export colour. Original registration was ROH750, robbed off it before my purchase. Sad fact, I still remember the chassis number EOTA183387!

Looking at that dash reminds me of my first car a 1955 Consul convertible, I was 17 in 1964 and the car had just returned from touring France and had arrived back with a miss on one cylinder, I took my dad to look at it and he whispered to me that's a burnt out exhaust valve! Offer him £30. The guy excepted my offer and two days later she was running sweet as a nut after a fitting a new valve and re grinding all the valves in. Loved that car, a mate had the Zephyr Six Mk1 and that had a power hood, yes a power hood amazing in 1955.

What a great drive, thanks guys, thoroughly enjoyed this, my first car was a 56 version of this, apparently its original colour was beige over burgundy but the guy who sold it to me had HAND painted it mid green all over! Great drive and not quite as many extras as your model but loved it very much, sold it to update to a Mk 4 Zephyr but wish I still had either car! The 56 Consul had registration HMK 911, yes worth a few pennies now for regno alone! The vacuum windscreen wipers took some getting used to as seemed to slow down when you needed them most! Great little car though and this video brought back so many wonderful memories! Thank you.

Ah. Lovely memories. My 1st car down here in Adelaide Sth Australia. A 1956 Mk 1 Same blue color as that one but not 2 tone. Just right for taking my 1st real girl friend to the drive in theatre It was a bit gutless but handled well for those days. The girl friend was nice too :)

One more thing, I sold the car a few years later to a girl I later married, and I am still married to. Funny old life.We still have two Mk 1 Consuls in our lives VKL29 and VKL27. Thanks to Kev Dipchan at Zodiac Motors at Cliffe in Rochester, Kent, without whom I would be so much richer today, but the world would be poorer in 1950s Fords!

My dad bought one of these in 1955 and 2 years later I was old enough to learn to drive in it. The most awkward thing about this car was that it didn’t have synchromesh on the 1st gear so going from 2nd to 1st gear involved a double de-clutch. Another “oddity” was that the heater was an optional extra! Fortunately Dad pushed the boat out just that little bit further.

The 6 cylinder cars came with an overdrive as an option. I have met owners at car shows who have fitted it and then tuned Consuls to pull it. I have owned a 55 Consul, loved it. Black over red with red plastic trim.

Tarted up with a good paint job , the result was not good by the unnecessary non-standard bling externally and the sad condition of the engine bay. Seems it was totally ignored in favour of a smart exterior. Also, sorry about the absent hood lining. Going to do a job for display, do it properly!
