Ride-on backyard railroad (1) - Switching

Switching operations on 7-7/8" gauge.
Coupling cars behind the locomotive, while pulling them out of storage shed.
The FCMA (Ferrocarril Modular Argentino) - Argentine Modular Railroad is a completely home made, narrow gauge (7-7/8 inches) short line, located at the house backyard.
It is a minimum gauge railroad, not a scaled down model, although it follows the 70`s argentine railroad painting scheme.
Tracks are modular (Decauville like). Each track panel is under 10 feet in length.
Hot rolled "T" steel was used for the rails. Which are screwed to wood sleepers (cross ties).
Main line length is about 135 feet (a very short line indeed!)
Ruling grade is 2.5%.
Minimum curve radius is just 10 feet (a bit too sharp!), imposed by property boundaries.
There are several sidings, to the workshop and the car barn.
Rolling stock:
-Locomotive: battery operated electric, 4 axles, all driven. Length about 4-1/2 feet, weighting over 800 lbs, top speed just less 1.5mph.
-Cars: 2 gondolas (4 axles), plus one tipping car (2 axles).
Equiped with "AAR" type couplers.

Hi Lucas, another interesting day at the railway track. I love Percy, he certainly moves fast. When I was your age my brothers and I when we could hear a train coming, we would run onto the bridge and watch the steam trains on the turntable. We would be covered in soot but that was nothing compared to the joy of watching the engine being turned. Thank you so much for reminding me of the happy days I had when I was young. Well your not wrong, but the thing is it is very expensive, time consuming, and space inefficient. As much as many people (including me) enjoy the mere sight of trains and transport, I think well be sticking to Railfanning.

Trate de que se parezca al FC Belgrano. La trocha quedo en 200mm, porque es lo mas ancho que puedo acomodar en el poco espacio disponible. Y que a la vez sea estable para viajar arriba. Saludos.

The couplers are handmade. But, there are some people who sell them too.

Actually, ballast was carried by using the railroad itself. Loading the side dump car at front of the property (street), then downloading it along side the line.

7-7/8" gauge? That's a bit of an unusual choice since most equipment of this size runs on 7-1/2" or 7-1/4" gauge and the next common gauge up is 12". Any particular reason for choosing that particular gauge?

The gauge is 200mm. Metric. So 7-7/8 is just the conversion.

Some of the wheels I use, are cast iron 3 inches OD, originally intended for industrial use in carts, that have to withstand high temperature (where rubber ones couldn´t). Later, they were taper turned, and 4 inch washer was welded for the flange.

How did you bend the steel tee? Did you have it rolled at a fabricator?

I bent it by hand, using a vise to hold it upside down. One segment at a time, going back and forth, to achieve a smooth curvature.

hi, the engine is about 1300mm long, 400mm wide, 600mm height. It is electric, battery powered. The rails are inverted T iron. No real rails are available in my country. cheers

I have no drawings of them. It was a long process of trial and error, until I got them to work. With lot of filing, grinding and cutting.
