I can't stand how the media is covering the few minor glitches that have occurred - they run with the worse quotes from people like "It's a disgrace!" or "I'll stick with my car!". They never quote anyone who has an optimistic opinion on the issues nor do they explain that these are minor glitches that will be caught and worked out in the coming weeks. It's infuriating because this bad messaging only discourages people to use the service.

A radio station did a 30 minutes segment on the Ottawa train and were making (up) parallel with the REM at every occasion. They then interviewed someone who kept saying that despite the delay they had a great time and the interviewer was trying to make them say "how bad was it"? Very frustrating I agree!

I like the idea of adding that small "musical" tone when doors are opening and closing. It seems kind of inspired from Japan, and adds more accessibility for those who can't see the doors opening or closing without beeing aggressive to ears.

It's just that the Americas have some sort of strong fear of foreign standards. Like if there is no standard door closing sound yet, then please use one from for example European standards. It will only make things easier for everyone!

@@jan-lukas I am not sure it was the point here. The REM is really European and really standardised in its conception (I'm European). It is very similar to what Grand Paris Express will be. This "innovation" (I'm not sure it can be called like that) may be adopted elsewhere depending on the returns.

The first few minutes reminds me of the elevated Stadtbahn in Berlin (especially the Alexanderplatz - Bellevue segment), with the two northern tracks devoted to the S-Bahn and the southern tracks for the regional rail, particularly as it passes so close to the buildings. Montreal is really building a nice system for itself. I hope the rest of the network manages to open on time. Thanks for posting this - I can pretend I'm in Montreal!

You are correct however the announcements are different because in Berlin both S-Bahn & Regional Bahn run by Deutsche Bahn Ingo Ruff Stimme, which makes them exactly the same S-Bahn Dresden Rhein-Main München Hamburg & Rhein-Ruhr systems announcements.

God bless Montreal. I watch this with SO MUCH ENVY from Toronto. The GO Transit system (while impressive) is so alienating and earth-crust-heavy. Whereas this tiny REM contraption is so intimate and small and simple. Montreal and Vancouver are truly big towns made for people, made for good living. Toronto is unliveable, it often feels.

8:21 love how the VMS sign says (in english) 'Welcome - to REM users on [the] Samuel de Champlain Bridge' and one time where English is used on road signs in Quebec. I assume the train travels at 80 km/h as thats the speed limit on the bridge for road traffic. For mainline rail however, mph is used.

@@OliversElevators Also, the speed feels slow on camera. I think it feels faster as a passenger than as a driver. Cant say if the drivers on the bridge are over the speed limit. Just need to calculate the distance and the time.

@@neonhills to be clear I’m not defending the behaviour. This is just how it is. Drivers in Montreal tend to completely disregard 80 km/h and 70 km/h and drive 90 to 110 in them. They also tend to pack less that a car length between vehicles which is far more dangerous at those speeds.

I'm a full time student at McGill from the Brossard who used to take rush hour busses that go downtown to get to class. I tested commute times and found out that I'd have to leave home 10 minutes earlier than I usually do to get to class on time due to the removal of busses that go to Montreal, since they got replaced by the REM. The REM has no competition, therefore no incentive to improve or maintain its services other than public backlash. We need to hold them accountable for their mistakes, unlike most of the people who I see in the comments who aren't locals and won't be punished by the consequences of a REM failure.

I'm not sure but this seems pretty slow. For example from 9:30 to 11:00 the train has a long stretch of straight track ahead of it and still the cars are faster. You already lose time going to and from transit stops, so the ride itself should at least be faster than in a car.

it work like metro de montreal, a car on highway is faster than train and metro but what with congestion on highway or bad weather or when worker need to repair the road ? and train and metro dont need to stop at stop sign or red light or because the driver ahead you want to turn, but cant because car or people, driving in montreal can be sometime or too much messy because that so with train it is just you avoid red light, stop sign, other drivers, valerie plante going into derp mode so currently we are in vacance du travail, it is in 1 week and especially in september we will see who is faster train or car

Just a question on price. Is it a flat fee regardless of where you get on or off the line? Because I figured that charging based on the distance between stations would be impractical since there is no way to control how long a passenger stays on the train.

It’s based on sectors, when you leave a sector you pay more (4.25 for between sectors instead of 3.50 for within sectors I believe)

Sorry, probably you don't mean that! Maybe the raised walkway grating? I was wondering about that too. Of course the trains are high floor, so for evacuation purposes they need a raised platform, but I don't recall seeing so much space below on other systems. Maybe it's just an artifact of the guideway support engineering. Montreal gets a lot of snow though; maybe it's for that.

Highways, constructions sites, empty terrains, parking lots, train tracks, sparse vegetation, etc... I will pass on this leg of the network. I wonder why Brossard's third track diverges before the switch between main tracks. Doesn't that effectively make the third platform impossible to arrive at from the Du Quartier direction? 🤔

I believe that this third track is not for passengers but rather for the maintenance facility.

Yes, but thats because its for trains heading south, so each side is accessible by the north or south track and the middle from both! Many trains will also travel beyond the station and come back, which means access to the third track too.

I've only seen the infrastructure from the outside. I saw the access points on the bridge, but couldn't think of their purpose. Looks like retarders in a couple of inclines?? Gare Centrale to Île des Soeurs in the morning would be a good time for railfans. VIA, exo, the Pointe-Saint-Charles switcher and the container train leaving the Port Of Montreal.

@RMTransit: I must say that, for a brand-new transit system, REM's automated trains are traveling at a rather LEISURELY pace. Perhaps it's because the system is SO new that it must first be completely "broken in" before the trains can be allowed to run at higher speeds. Better to be safe than sorry. Clearly they need to fine-tune their station-announcement system - "Panama" mentioned twice when the station after it should have been announced as, "Du Quartier." As it stands, the REM is barely competitive with automobile travel, as can plainly be seen from its trains as they cross the St. Lawrence River alongside the highway bridge, where cars are regularly outpacing the train. Thank you for sharing with us viewers your front-window-view ride along this first-to-be-opened section of REM's new network. Very nicely done. I am curious - were there any on-board train staff?

Reminder that front-view cameras always tend to fool you when it comes to speed. As do parallel angles (front or rear facing). It's important to look at the edges of the screen to gauge the actual speed.

That's true, while you can get on the main floor of central station from the REM in an elevator, If you would want to go to the orange line, you would most likely have to go outdoor and go true 1000 de la gauchetière, they have an Elevator from the main, floor to the métro line,

I read that the average speed of the new REM is 50kmh per hour, and that the REM can only reach its top speed of 100km/h on the Champlain bridge exclusively.... To be honnest a 50 km/h average speed is really disappointing considering how much money went into this new modern transit project.

What did you expect?? Like obviously an urban transit project will have a lower average speed because it has to stop at stations. That requires slowing down.

​@@justsamoo3480the thing is, when you're accelerating uniformly from 0 to 100 or decelerating from 100 to 0 your average speed in just that time frame is 50km/h. So a total average speed of 50km/h means that this train either accelerates to 100km/h and then immediately starts decelerating, or that it doesn't actually reach 100km/h consistently

do you want do same judgement with car, because i doubt too than your car average speed is over 50 km/h on montreal street, except if you are lucky enough to only encounter green light, avoid stop sign and other cars ahead you that wait to turn 😊 or you only drive on montreal street at 3h am 😊

@@vkobevk The thing is that the REM is built on a track dedicated to REM trains. Which means REM trains basically have their own private highway, so it doesn't need compete stop at any lights or compete with traffic other than basic stops at REM stations. Looking at this video and seeing the train getting passed by average traffic on the highway is not going to convince people with cars to take the REM except in during rush hour traffic. Most people value time more than anything else. People with cars will chose the REM if it's faster than their car to execute their daily routine. But if it's not, or if they feel like it's not much of an improvement they'll chose their car. It's as simple as that.

With that type of stop spacing you should seriously invest into faster trains, being slower than the cars on the highway in moderate traffic is a really bad sign. Traveling by rail always has a longer distance to cover accessing the station, so to be competitive in travel times you need to be faster than the cars! This is why HSR needs to be that fast and why express metros run with over 100km/h all over the world, but not the REM apparently.

I was going to say the same. I don’t want to be a nay-sayer because this is such a big step. BUT, if you’re going to invest this much in design and infrastructure, to not be able to exceed 100 km/h is underwhelming and disappointing. I’m sure it will still be far more time and cost efficient for lots of people, but imagine even how much better it could be?

Could be worse. The Alstom Metropolis is also used on Singapore MRT and there they're limited at 90km/h. On the Paris metro, these same model of trains (called MF01) runs at 70km/h. Although, hopefully they'll be able to upgrade the system to be able to run at the 120km/h that the trains are designed for.

I’m seeing an accordion effect in the highway speeds. Perhaps people are exceeding the speed limit at times. Also, is it possible that train speeds are limited for a time period due to the system being new? EDIT: Yes, highway traffic is definitely faster in the second half of the video.

REM maximum speed is 100km/h which is very correct for an express metro. I don't know if it gets there during the video however. There is maybe a reason for it. Camera effect may also make the ride look slower than it is in real life.

@@equilat It is not about perceived speed. Cars are passing the train in the second half of the video; in the first half there is a back and forth. The cars may also be exceeding the speed limit at times. I’m not sure if there is enough speed difference to affect door to door times.

My biggest reason why I don’t like automated transit. It’s always so slow. None of that is at 100kph... And all of that to keep the system running with the correct interval, like just make the trains stop a bit longer or shorter at the stations. You can shave off like 2 or 4 min just by speeding up, that matters to some people.
