Still really annoyed about the protests that shut down the REM de l'Est portion of the project. I live close to where that line was being proposed and really wanted that route close by. If there's ever a rally in support of restarting the project, I would certainly join it.

The East proposal was "protested" because it was poorly conceived, competed with the existing Green Line and no one wants an elevated train cutting through their neighbourhood (see the existing Autoroute 40). The Montrealers on the East side voted for the Pink Line.

@@donk4304 This is all misleading or outright wrong. For one, the REM de l'Est didn't "compete" with the Green Line, it would've completed the transit network which is severely lacking in the area. The Green Line would still not only continue to receive existing ridership from areas but also gain new riders from the connections it would receive. Furthermore, the Green line is saturated (which will only worsen) and has a high station density, making it slow from end to end. Whoever says the REM Est would've "competed" with the Green line has no understanding of how transit works. Also, never compare an elevated train to an elevated highway. One is 5-10 metres wide and provides efficient transit to areas that need it. The other is 30+ metres wide, requires the demolition of neighbourhoods, pollutes the air, remains noisy 24/7, brings car traffic to the surrounding areas and is generally poorly designed when considering anyone not in a car. Elevated trains are also cost-effective and realistic, unlike fully tunnelled metro, which is why the REM line A was able to cover such vast distances in its network while costing barely more than the Blue line extension. The Pink Line was exactly what you described the REM de l'Est as; poorly conceived. It was a fantasy plan made up by a politician to gain votes. It would have cost a ridiculous amount to build, for one, and the areas it covered were completely idiotic. Half of its run would be pointless, as it parallels both the Orange and Green Line and centers the metro around the downtown area specifically (which is exactly what transit shouldn't do). The REM de l'Est was an infinitely better design and one that actually would have been built. It was killed off by people who don't understand anything about how cities work or operate. The usual in North America, unfortunately.

I’m from to Toronto but I lived in Montreal for 2-3 months. One of my favourite things about the city is the amazing metro! Bar none, the best transit system in Canada, hands down! They’re fast, comfortable, and frequent as hell! And there’s cell service! The REM is truly amazing and it’s the most amazing transit project in Canada! It will change the city forever and for the better! Felicitations Montreal!

Thanks Chris for this fantastic followup to your previous one: The REM is coming. The REM is now here and this is only the beginning. Phase 1 now rolls across the sublime Samuel-de Champlain bridge. Phase 2 will roll through the very long and dark Mont Royal tunnel under the eponymous mountain that defines Montréal and which gave it its actual name. Phase 3 will finally roll to and from the fast-expanding Dorval airport through which transit most of the international tourists and visitors. Each phase should be just as, if not more, exciting than the previous one. It's a really great project and this equally great video helps us to understand why. NH

The REM looks great. I'm looking forward to going to Montreal and trying it out. I know a lot of people are disappointed that they REM de l'Est is not being built, but I think if they change the plan a bit and make it better, it will be accepted too. Montreal, generally speaking, has an east-west downtown. It's much easier to cross it the way the original REM is doing that to go along it. By doing so, one would need to tunnel through long distances, at least up to the Jacques-Cartier Bridge. If it was closer to the port, it might work that way, or if the line north of Mount Royal split and had a part going east along the Metropolitan highway, that might also work too. Anyway, this is a big accomplishment for Montreal and I believe that REM's can be built in the suburbs and serve downtown Montreal and eventually, each other. Congrats Montreal.

thanks for the video ... i use the REM everyday ... very efficient , fast and fun .... I grew up on a canadian base air force where fighter jets (F-18) planes were taking off 24-7 , our brain get used to the noise .... People in Griffintown live next to the VIA rail trains and other trains plus Ville MArie high way ..... I used to live around Square Victoria and firefighters were out almost everynight ... in 2023 , people are egocentric and stupids

As far as the noise go, I think that there are multiple problems, and that the blame is shared between multiple parties. For starters, theses peoples moved in next to the track. They really should have expected some level of noise. The bigger issue is the fact that Montreal allowed contractors to build theses buildings to be built in the first place. Montreal really should have required triple glazed windows in buildings next to the train track. The siding of the buildings should have been made of materials that can absorb sound.

I live in Griffintown, the problem is that we get the sound and no station when we were promised a station. We already don’t have a metro station and were let down by them scrapping our rem station

Big cities in the Canada and the US are extremely behind big cities in Europe and Asia when it comes to public transit. Our transit systems are not as dense nor as long. Generally speaking this is a very good step in the right direction. I much prefer taking public transit if it is more practical and faster than using a car. If you live in a densely populated area like Montreal then it's kind of insane to be dependent on a car in order to get around. Especially when traveling to/from work.

I sleep with my windows open right next to a major bus corridor down the street of a Metro station, next to a stop sign no less. So i get to hear buses accelerating all day and night. I stopped noticing it years ago. I'd love a little electric train that only passes during the day. NIMBYs are just big cry babys. Especially that man-child, Drew with his two earplugs (how do you wear two pairs of earplugs 🤔) and pillow over his head.

Montréal already had a bad story of a massive eminent domain to build a visionary airport in Mirabel in 1975 for passenger transportation. It turned out that they only used about 15% of the land they took from private owners and the airport terminal was used for only 29 years before being demolished. So every time we say eminent domain in Montréal for large infrastructure people get really defensive.

You are right ! Métro is short for Métropolitain , Underground = Under the ground and Subway = Subterrean way. All metro , underground and Subway are like Sewer surfing. At least with the REM you can see outside while traveling.

Great video! As someone who don't live in Montreal, there is a couple things I find ans downside of this project however. First, I don't like the idea of the seats positioning...I mean, I know it's a rapid transit, but even on rapid transit I sometimes like to just seat and watch through the window behind me. Second, it would be better if it got extended towards more distant suburban settlements...because exo trains are quite infrequent generally and buses get stuck in traffic.

They got a lot right with the REM. But how is it acceptable for a new multi-billion dollar transit system to have hard plastic seats that cost about $1.23 each? 21st century tech with 19th century 'comfort'. :^/

They are actually very comfortable and similar to the Metro’s Azur seats. Much nicer than seats with a thin piece of dirty fabric.

As an older gent, I grew up here in Montreal in the days when all transit had padded seats, and you could ride any long trajectory without getting a numb bum. Never noticed them to be particularly dirty. But maybe they should put Azur seats in airplanes and hotel lobbies, and we'd all feel better about their cleanliness. :^D

@@vkobevk Good to know you like the hard plastic seats - may your bum enjoy. Don't ever go on an airplane or intercity train, you'll be afraid of pee. I grew up with Montreal buses that had thick padded vinyl seats. They were soft and comfortable, and I doubt they were harder to clean.

@@pbasswil who say i love to sit on airplane seat? if you enjoy this vomit spot place good for you 😊 well montreal intercity train is like one train every 2 hours so it is so bad, rem is every 10 minutes, so the rotation is faster on the rem train, not so much time to clean up the train, it is like the bus and the metro and anyway majority time you stand up, so it is not like you have opportunity to sit except now when they dont chose hard plastic they chose this dirty cotton seat and sorry while rainy or snowy day it is not enjoyable to sit on wet cotton seat it is like if someone pee on your sitting place
