About halfway through the video, he's already fully covered all the licks from Riders, the key and the dorian mode, the hand shapes used, the minor pentatonic vs blues scale, approaches to use when soloing, and there's still 22 left minutes to go! He certainly seems like a powerhouse in teaching piano. Far beyond just the notes, this is the approach to theory that I've been looking for.

Mike, I've been playing Riders On The Storm on piano since it was first released. NEVER have I seen such an absolutely perfect breakdown of Ray Manzarek's skills presented and taught - YOU ARE AMAZING! As someone who strives for playing perfection as in the recorded song...I love how through the Dorian scales, blues scales, fifths, rhythms, and everything you present - that I can have more confidence and knowledge to make Riders 'my own' so to speak - yet always have the recorded version permanently ingrained in brain-to-fingers! :-) This is absolutely phenomenal - you're the best! Thank you!!

That was a pretty stunning exposition of this awesome song. I'm 67 now so LA Woman was a big album for us back in the day but funnily enough the twenty-something couple next door were blasting this song out the kitchen window just a couple of weeks back. Clearly a piece of music like this never dies. This exposition of the theory behind it's construction explains why.

You are an amazing teacher. You did leave one tip out… maybe the greatest KZbin video ever is a video of Ray Sitting at a fender piano and explains how he wrote this song. If you are learning this song you must watch this video of Ray. It doesn’t teach you as much as this video..but hearing Ray and watching him play is really inspirational. This is very useful for me ! as I want to learn music theory techniques then apply those music theory and techniques to actually playing real songs and real music and play real piano solos, lead piano melody lines, and lead piano riffs ! so thanks heaps for this ! you are a great help ! am bout to have some advanced piano lessons so I shall ask my piano teacher to teach me and revise the concepts that you have taught me here so I can improve my playing :)

My son got a keyboard for Xmas and as a guitar player for 15 years I couldn’t resist having a crack at it. This video will be absolute gold in the coming months, can’t wait!

Ok so after getting the basics down I finally came back to this….. WOW this lesson is sooooo good, all the scales and theory to really understand what ray was doing, I finally understand modes from 1 lesson and I’ve played guitar for years n years I even got my son doing the bass part while I did the solo! So much fun Please do the same on some other Doors songs if you ever get the time. Thank you so much for this lesson 🙏

This is awesome breakdown thanks! I need to play this on my Rhodes 54 note piano, which doesn't have enough keys to do exactly what Ray did, but I'm sure I can improvise! Keeping that bass line going with the left hand while playing the scales and solo parts it quite tricky, lol!

Glad you are having fun with the song :). And those 54 note Rhodes are rarer than hens teeth!! I have had two of them in my career and should never have parted with either!!

This is really really good. That you a lot. Keep this kind of content coming and you for sure will make it on KZbin if that’s what you are after. Your style of explaining is perfect.

I learned this song many years ago from memory, the bass line, descending run and a first inversion verse sequence - in f minor, not thinking anything of it since the shape is ideal for that cascading Dorian riff. I'm glad I came across your excellent tutorial, and e minor sounds much nicer.

Okay, I recognize what is. This is a modern music theory lesson ... And it looks like a pretty good one from what I've seen so far. I'm book marking it for now because I was looking for to upgrade the guitar version I already play.. (Guitar is my first instrument.) I working on learning piano for my next instrument so I will be watching this video a lot on the laptop I have next to my piano.
