Great video, Mike!!! Thanks!!! 😊 Would you consider doing a video breaking down one of your own 12-bar blues organ solos?? Something you would play on a gig. Thanks again!!!

How many years does it take to play with two hands at different rhythms on each hand? Any tips?
@UniverseofKeys15 сағат бұрын
Practice hands separately until the part is committed to muscle memory. That is key in my opinion, then put hands together. One thing that I have always done is tapped drum rhythms on a table, or my leg. Two opposing rhythms in each hand. it's something you can do while driving, watching TV etc. This has really fixed coordination issues for me. Quarter notes in the left, eights in the right, or sixteenth notes in the right, or triplets etc. Also... play some basic classical piano, amazing for independence. Bach and Mozart!! Good luck!!

any tips on balancing piano practice with organ
@UniverseofKeys4 күн бұрын
Hello :). it is so easy to get distracted and not pay more attention to one or the other. I keep a diary and make sure I am keeping the two in balance. I struggle to stay focused and also forget what I am working on so the diary keeps me grounded. I also keep a playlist of piano music that I am inspired by as well as an organ playlist. I pull from those playlists to motivate me for both. I consider listening to be an essential part of practice. Also...there is a portion of practice that is not specific to either and is just about music..... concepts that apply to both (scales, chords progressions etc). Ultimately they are really completely different approaches so very important to have your hands on both instruments on the regular. I have been playing for about 45 plus years now and still don't have it all figured out but I hope this helps in some way. Thanks for reaching out and Seasons Greetings!!

For those of us Mortals who want to approach Jon Lords playing style, but cannot afford the money /weight/ space of a proper souped up Hammond and Leslie combo, how do we go about getting the right, for a lack of better word girth and growl in our organ sounds. I have used sample based ROMpler organ sounds, and run them through amps, distortion pedals and all sorts of other dirt sources, and what i get is a decidedly not the same.I am clearly missing something but i have no idea what im not doing right. Things sound thin and fizzy, vs full
@UniverseofKeys4 күн бұрын
Yeah I hear you..... Distortion pedals often tend to thin the tone out in an unpleasant way. My sound is just the B3 through a Leslie with no effects in this video. When Jon played my B3 they ran it with two modified Leslies through two Marshalls. And really, who has the room or cash for that lol. The common ground in all of this is tubes. Marshalls and Leslies have that beautiful round full tone, not thin. I swear by my Neo Ventilator pedal. It is what I use on tour and it has a lush, warm, thick distortion that i haven't been able to match. I use a Yamaha YC 61 which has a beautiful pre amp distortion that I mix with the vent. I can get subtle distortion but also full on Jon Lord. I can't say enough good things about the Ventilator. I have the old grey one (1st Generation). I think it sounds better than the new one, not sure why but I bought the new one and sold it immediately, it just wasn't right to my ear. This is only my opinion and it is possible that I am just a creature of habit. They do come up on Ebay for about 300.00 US every once and a while. I forget sometimes onstage that there isn't a real Leslie on stage. Incredible. Hope this helps. All the best and Seasons Greetings!

First of all: You are such a great organ player / teacher but you know that for sure ;-) I'm owning the YC73 for about 1,5 years and it is a joy to play (band context and wedding gigs). For rehearsals, lighter traveling and smaller venues i'm constantly thinking of a YC61. The only thing that concerns me are reports of noisy keys after using the YC61 Waterfall keybed for a while. What is your opinion on this topic? Sure you can't hear it in a live context but what about the resistance of the keys while playing? Thanks in advance and cheers from germany
@UniverseofKeys8 күн бұрын
Hello :). Yes I have heard of this problem however it has not happened to me. I have broken some keys on my YC purely from my aggressive playing style. I ordered a new keybed in this year. So that was about 3 years of touring with the first keybed before I destroyed it. That goes for every organ I have owned so it is not specifically a Yamaha issue. It is a “me” issue. lol. I love my YC 61!! Just a great sounding board. And light!!
@CremerSoul8 күн бұрын
Hi Mike and thanks for your fast reply :-) Yeah, you’re digging real hard into the keys and i love this style of playing the organ (is there even another way? 😂). As long as it is possible to replace the keybed (and does not break the bank) it seems to me that the pros of the YC61 are far stronger than the cons. I think i have to buy this little beast! Make it a great day and enjoy the Christmas time in Canada or wherever you are right now :-)

It will be a nice Christmas present for you! I don't think you will regret it. And YES diggin in hard is the only way lol!! Best of the season to you!

Awesome to see Ian MacLagan getting some love! He’s one of my biggest influences. My buddy lived in Austin for a while and would go see Ian play and hang out with him. Just discovered this channel and I love it! It’s so hard to find instruction on B3 and piano geared towards rock & roll/blues/soul/etc. the way you do it. Great stuff!
