I personally feel it is ok for Cambodia to “be behind” Vietnam or Thailand in term of modernization. I went to Nepal in New Year 2000 and it was “behind” too but I fell in love with their modest living, spirit, nature and exotic feeling when you traveled to the unknown land.

Majority of stores don’t have the credit/debit machine because it costs too much. Credit/debit equipment requires maintenance and a certain fee for the third party which many Vietnamese and Cambodia businesses refuse. Let’s notice the size of the business to predict if they do accept card payments. Supermarket, shopping mall, coffee chain, big hotel, etc. do accept card payments

Cambodia is like a new kid on the block and it might not be for everyone. A prolonged civil war was officially ended in 1998. Pol Pot destroyed everything including all human resources and infrastructures.They started to develop in 2000s so it's not very long ago. They still have a long way to go but they are catching up with their neighbors. I returned my first trip back home from the US in 1995 when it was first officially open for international visitors'. Everything was still much the same when I left in 1979. The major highways were destroyed and potholes were like everywhere. It took us for at least 12 hours from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and it was not very safe then as they are still fighting in the Thai border. Life is too short to last long to do the things we don't love doing. Greetings from a genocide survivor!
