Okay, quick correction. The arcade version of Daytona USA did have a time trial mode. You activate it by holding the start button while selecting your transmission.

Nice video. Ridge Racer had a more impressive arcade Cabinet. I actually remember playing "Ridge Racer Full Scale" arcade machine. It used a full size Mazda MX5 (or Mazda Miata) car that you sat inside. The car itself controlled the video game. The gameplay was a little different. It had an actual clutch pedal for shifting gears, and you needed to know how to drive manual in real life to use it in game. The air vents blew air in your face as you accelerated, and the radio changed music if you pressed the buttons during gameplay. It's such a shame you never got the chance to try it out. It was an amazing arcade machine.

IMO, Ridge Racer and Daytona USA are comparable only to a handful or two of other games (including titles like Draughts, Gun Fight, Cube Quest, and The Tomorrow Children) in terms of how graphically revolutionary they were-they were, to my knowledge, the first 3D video games *ever* to have a world constructed _entirely_ out of texture-mapped and/or smooth-shaded polygons (at least excluding "particle"-like objects; and the "pit crew" in the case of Ridge Racer), without skimping out with flat-colored meshes and sprites in areas as earlier and many later 3D games had. In other words, they were the first "modern" 3D games. BTW, I really enjoyed both this and your Sega Saturn video. Wish you more success (and an open schedule, I guess)!

Both very defining games. Great commentary on the game AI, btw. Unfortunately, having had only a SNES at the time, I was ecstatic when I came across Screamer for DOS. I did have Daytona USA for the PC but I never got into it the same way I did with games like the Need for Speed series. When you mentioned shaving milliseconds off lap times (5:25), I remembered doing the same in Sega Rally. Good times! Keep up the great videos!

I remember playing Daytona USA as a kid at my local Dave N Busters, it was probably my favorite and a lot of others favorite game there too since they had a 4 player system, was so mad when they got rid of it that I ended up getting the 360 version once i found out about it, then for ridge racer i got into quite recently because of the music and man its so much fun as well, R4 and R6 are my absolute favorites and PSP is really good too

Just finished watching this, while I am a Ridge Racer fan, I never played either versions of RR1, so, I can't judge how well they play in comparison to the later entries of the series, as for Daytona USA, I did play the PSN/XPLA remaster nearly a decade ago for the first time, and the car handling feels NOTHING like what you'd experience in an RR game, as it prioritize realistic handling over smooth arcadey experience, and it is quite challenging to master the handling of your vehicle, and how to take sharp turns without going off course, and losing precious time in the process, so, it is indeed a lot less forgiving. Knowing you for the huge classic Sega fan, I thought this is gonna be a one-sided comparison, where you shit all over RR, and why it's inferior to Daytona in every way, but, this end up being a lot more fair than what I expected, lol. It's like comparing Metal Gear Solid to Splinter Cell, both are action stealth games, and both are good in their own ways, but, there are enough differences between them, it's kinda hard to compare them head to head. But yeah, despite their differences, both games set the foundation for the 3D arcade racing genre to thrive later on, every racing game out there owes it to these two games that set the standards for the genre. it's a damn shame that both games are barely acknowledged by their publishers nowadays, especially Ridge Racer, which haven't gotten a new entry since that shitty ass PS Vita game in 2011, which is just a barebones, half-assed re-skin of Ridge Racer 7, with an awful DLC model. (No, RR: Unbounded does NOT count, that was NOT a real Ridge Racer game), I wonder if the series will ever get a revival in the near future similar to that of Ace Combat, another Namco series that was in hibernation until just a few years ago thanks to VR, considering the original game is gonna be 30 years old in a few months. and the less said about Daytona USA, the better, perhaps, it'll be included as a playable mini-game in an upcoming Yakuza game, if Sega allowed RGG Studio to let them include it, lol. This was a well made video, my friend, keep making more stuff like this, I'd love to see you make more. 👍

Daytona is utterly god-like. SEGA's arcade output in the 90s was phenomenal, with House of the Dead being a personal favourite. I remember wandering into an arcade and seeing that cabinet for the first time. I just stood there, mesmerised - a pretty common symptom of first encounters with SEGA cabs back in the day! Nice video. Ridge Racer enjoyed a warm welcome on the PlayStation and Daytona ruled the arcades for over twenty years. Growing up, my dad worked in an arcade, and I played a lot of Daytona. I had all the top times on it's three tracks by the time I was 10 years old. It's a game that will stay in my top 5 forever. I can still remember when we had a full eight cabinet setup in the arcade. The Advanced course was the go-to for racing against friends. Some of the most fun I've ever had playing a video game. I'll always be a perfectionist when I play Daytona. Nailing that tunnel drift on Expert course is just so satisfying.

The fact that Ridge racer Turbo mode on the ps1 had only time attack was the only feature the developers could deliver based on the console's limited graphical processing power. In order to deliver a 60 fps smooth version , the devs had to remove other cars from the track to reduce the toll on the polygon raterizer. I remember myself playing the turbo version back in the early 2002 before we had later access to system 22 home emulation delivered by viva nunu. Alas, the console 60 fps version never the less gave us the initial footprint of simulated home arcade experience which was amazing. I spent my whole summer playing the turbo version everyday.The game was superior to any other arcade home racing game at the time.

Man, this was a great comparison! Being a huge fan of both RR Arcade and Daytona, I'm so glad you recommended them both - I only played both of them for the first time about 4/5 years ago, and they have since become some of my all-time favourite games. The only thing I'd say is: the original Saturn port of Daytona handles extremely well with the default controller; I actually far prefer it to the handling of RR PS1. (In fact... I don't really like the drift handling of *any* of the PS1 Ridge Racer games, not even R4!) I tend to think Daytona was designed primarily around its manual transmission mode, too - that H-shifter makes several turns much more manageable compared to brake-drifting alone. The automatic car can't, for example, drift around the penultimate turn of Dinosaur Canyon, meaning you've no choice but to slow down quite a bit. (At least, I can't seem to drift around that turn, anyway lol) Anyway, - subscribed, and looking forward to more of your videos! :)

Ill always prefer the ridge racer series overall but between the first games daytona usa is very faithful to the arcade and surprisingly holds up really well despite the poor performance the fact that the original saturn port could handle 40 cars at once is still really impressive, i wish that they spent more time on it before release. I might get a ps3 just to play the arcade port because they have delisted it from xbox sadly and there's no way to get it anymore. also how could you not like ridge racer 5's soundtrack, euphoria and gammon go so hard, it even has a rare hero remix T-T. loved the video!! hope to see more ridge racer related stuff in the future! it surprisingly doesn't get as much attention or love as daytona.

Yeah I actually really like the original Saturn port for what it is. I probably still wouldn't pick it over the PS3 version, but the fact that it gets as close as it does is bloody impressive for sure As for RRV's soundtrack, I've since warmed up to it in places. Samurai Rocket is pretty good, so are Euphoria and Fogbound, but most other things are too repetitive for me, especially the latter tracks by Mijk Van Dijk, he kinda brings it down imo

Lol yeah I knew that already. I actually heard a bit of the song and I'm not the biggest fan of what they did to Mitsuyoshi-san's vocals. It sounds too processed, and the autotune makes it even worse, it kinda takes all the expressiveness out of his voice and singing style.

The corner in Ridge Racer that you said that you can get around with a small power slide has tiles around the outside. If you clip it just right, then you can take that corner at full speed. I've got Daytona on the PS3, but I prefer the Dreamcast version. It just feels better, you really feel pushed into your chair by the inertia of the car on the screen. I've never played another racer that does that.
@SixtyRGB

I can't stand the Dreamcast version personally lol. It might have a better feeling of intertia, but for me, steering is so twitchy. I don't like how trying to take a turn ends with a 50/50 chance of sliding out that I then have to try and (fail to) correct for. It's a shame, if it had controls closer to the Arcade version, it'd probably be my favourite version of the game, it looks awesome and has some pretty neat extra tracks.

I absolutely love both games just as much now as when they first came out. Daytona's gameplay absolutely had more depth but sometimes it's nice to zone out to Ridge Racer's initiate drift and be pretty much on rails mechanics. Ridge Racer is an absolute masterclass in track design, until you take into account the long track where it becomes a prime example of how not to do things lol. The complete lack of landmarks just made it difficult to learn, which does add to the difficulty, but Daytona offered more of a challenge while being a lot more consistant in that department. Soundtrack wise both are very memorable and were always attention grabbing in arcades. However the heavy use in youtube videos of Daytona's music has just about pushed it into cringe territory imo. On the other hand I can never see myself getting tired of the Ridge Racer soundtrack, it made Gabber seem palatable ffs! Mutiplayer games in Daytona are great imo. While the rubberbanding is extreme and races among experienced players often devolve into games of who can do the best job of abusing it, it's still a blast to play and has got many more hours of playtime out of me than it has any right to. I can't comment so much on Ridge Racer's multiplayer since the lack of accessibility means I haven't been able to go up against players on a similar level with it, which is a shame. I did play a fair bit of Ridge Racer 6's online mode however but the Nitro/Ultimate Charge mechanic made it more or less purely about who could do the best job of abusing that to the point where it didn't seem to be about driving at all. More often than not players would spend the entire race with the car travelling sideways which was just silly, as far as I'm concerned the franchise deserved to die on that basis alone. I would absolutely reccomend the 2011 port to anyone looking to play Daytona, it's the "Arcade Perfect" home conversion that 90's magazines often wished for, the only real downside is that the online multiplayer implementation is pretty bad. You couldn't see active lobbies while they were in game and the host couldn't change the settings once a lobby had been opened. It was great for a month or so after release but became impossible to find games after that so if you want to play it now you'll want to organise it outside of the game beforehand. Otherwise just emulate the arcade versions, as stated in the video Ridge Racer plays fine with a normal controller or even digital controls but you'll want a steering wheel for Daytona.
