Ridge Vent With Gable Channel

In this video, Mark shows you how to install a ridge vent and ridge caps with the KasselWood gable channel installed along the gable. Mark begins by installing pieces of coil stock leading up to the opening in the ridge and then shows you how to install the ridge vent and ridge caps to complete the process.

Is the a set Back requirement for the ridge vent from the edge of the gable?....or are you supposed to go all the way to the edge?

Hi Andre. Thanks for the pertinent question. It is best to run the ridge vent all the way to the gable edge to avoid having to step the ridge caps down to the roof deck for the length of the overhang. You obviously won’t be venting the overhang distance but if you don’t run it to the edge, it will be difficult to make that height transition of about 1” watertight as well as aesthetically pleasing. The end cap should not run behind the facia trim. This will allow water to run behind the facia. Otherwise, not bad. Ive never used that roofing. Still waiting on doing that type.

Hi Walter. Thanks so much for your comments and thoughts. Your concern is spot-on. In this case, though, for wind resistance the ridge cap is tucked into the gable trim which is a double walled channel resting on the outside of the fascia. Any water than ends up in the channel is safely carried off the roof at the bottom of the gable trim or, if there is enough water, directly over the outside shorter wall of the gable trim.
