Reviewing the Ridgid 16 gallon 6.5hp NXT Wet/Dry Vac item number HD1600
Talking about some other shop vacs I considered as well including the Craftsman shop vac and the Bauer shop vac from Harbor Freight Tools and why I chose this shop vac.

That Ridgid looks nice. I didn't know about the warranty. I have a Stihl shop vac. It is quiet and powerful. It is my favorite. The only reason I bought it however is because it was marked way down on clearance. The store lost their Stihl franchise and was getting rid of everything. In my opinion it's not worth the full price though. I just happened to get lucky.

Free advise from the old guy: When it comes to your tools, wait an extra paycheck and buy the best. It will save you a ton of money over the course of your life. I am 55. I have been through my starter "Porter Cable" tools, the Ridgid upgrades and into the DeWalts I have today. I wasted TONS of money, trying to save money...only to end up with the top tier tools in the end anyway. And man, when it comes to Shop Vacs, Ridgid is the gold standard. I just bought this 1600. It replaced the ONE tool I have never had to replace. I am replacing the 5 gallon Ridgid I bought 30 years ago. And after 30 years, I did not even HAVE to replace it. I just wanted a bigger one. Ridgid IS the "DeWalt" of shop vacs.

Love this model of vacuum. I just went to an estate sale and bought one for $34 with the aftermarket detail kit that comes with the orange hose. I'm using it to clean my garage / gym and appreciate the blower function. This came just on time as my old vacuum just died the day before. Talk about being lucky.

A few other things worth mentioning: that model comes stock with a very effective filter; it filters very fine material. They also make bags for it. And best of all, there’s a HEPA kit. I think it’s like $50 and you can swap out the filter with one that’s washable/reusable and high efficiency bags that turn it into a true HEPA unit and it’s still way cheaper than just about any dust extractor.

Well, for that money, you could replace your household vacuum with this thing. I guess one drawback is noise, but for the capacity, it probably filters fine enough to give a Miele or a Sebo a run for their money with much larger bags. If you have carpet, you could cobble together a central vac electric power nozzle kit and you'll be cleaning just as inexpensively or even less (filter wise) as a Kirby or a central vac. I actually made a system to work with wet and dry vacs for this very purpose out of some central vacuum fittings, an old HVAC Fan Centre control relay and my central vacuum hose and power nozzle.

Thank you for the video, you inadvertently answered my question about this Unit and its smaller 4 gallon sibling. And that was if the hose will fit on the blower output or not. My plan is to use the shop back in the garage For the vehicles but then when we go camping take the blower portion with me so I have both a leaf blower And a blower to dry off my dog after we give her baths on the road. She gets in a lot of lakes

Just pick one of these up today at home Depot Canada, my 4-in chip extractor threw it's motor blades... Was playing in a whole ton of 12-in wide rough pine and needed something right now. Jerry rigged a reducer, and hope for the best but didn't expect much. Holy... Crap... This thing just rocked. I can't believe how easily it guzzled down the chips. The thing even sucked the dust from the infeed plate back into the machine and up the hose. Any and every other use for this vac is just gravy, I found my new chip extractor for my planer.

My first Ridgid was a curb find that I picked up, cleaned out and used. I liked the build quality of this relatively inexpensive machine where you can take the bottom off of the motor and clean it out and the same applies to the top. The only downside to that machine was it didn't take bags. It's still running and I still have it, thinking of giving it to my brother for detailing cars. If he wants it he can use it. He doesn't use bags so it's probably not an issue. I just received my new one today and I really like it. It's a bit smoother than the old one and accepts bags. It also came with the detailing kit and is the same price (for some reason) as the "stand alone" model, same machine, just without the detailing kit. I wanted the orange hose as I plan on buying the commercial cleaning nozzle kit with the steel wands that also works with this hose.

I have the small Ridgid vac that's almost ubiquitous in the automotive detailing industry. It's been rock solid, pretty powerful for it's size and more than enough for the few interiors that I do. Hate interiors! If the model in the video is similar in its performance, and on a larger scale, I bet it's very good. The easy availability of reasonably priced accessories comes in handly.

Craftsman machines, MasterCraft/MasterVac/Maximum (Canadian Tire brands) wet and dry utility vacs are basically rebadged Ridgids. Emerson Electric makes all of them, from what I can tell.

I've been debating between the HD1600 vs HD1800. The HD1800 seems to have a higher rated CFM which would be good for my application, but I hate that it has 2 wheels in the back instead of casters like this one. It's also $60 more at $160 for the HD1800 vs $100 for the HD1600.
@Transmissions
@Transmissions 4 жыл бұрын
I had the same issue. I went with the 1600. The blower seemed useful and the four casters pulled smoothly across the floor. The sucking power is really good. It’s hard to pull the attachments off the floor because they stick! Super impressed so far.

When these higher end Rigid shop vacs came out the hose locks were really good. You could yank on them all day, in any weather and they would not come apart. They have since redesigned it with the cheaper locking assemblies that were offered on the cheaper models. Absolute crap. Especially in cooler weather when you try to detail a vehicle and have to really exercise the locking mechanism which inevitably fails. Too bad. The machine itself is really nice. Connections? Real crap.

Have you had any problems with the locking drum latches? I just bought mine and was assembling it when I noticed that one of the drum latches was loose and not locking. To Home Depot's credit, they just told me to bring it in for a new one.

I've got this same model and the leaf blower feature is so much stronger than the vac. The vac doesnt pickup small pieces of drywall and lots of air comes out of the 'air out side'. The hose is fully locked. Is there a step missing for the vac suction?

HELP! I sure hope you see this pretty quick. I’ve done something terribly wrong. I’ve only used this shop vac outdoors when emptying my spa. Well I am chiseling out grout in my bathroom and had a whole bathroom full of dark brown grout in a bunch of piles. So I thought I was doing good by using my shop vac but when I turned around it was blowing it all over my house. There is this dark grout layer all over my entire house. I don’t know how to fix the shop vac or what is missing, why is it blowing everywhere. There is I see a hole in the back that it’s not covered which I didn’t notice. I don’t know where the pieces that covers it. So now I see a cover that was blown about 10 feet away. I tried to put it on but it fell through the hole as it was too small. I don’t know where it goes. I need to see all the parts and where they go and what is missing from this dang machine. I don’t know how I’m gonna clean up the grout dust which is laying everywhere.

It is loud. It isnt the loudest shop vac I have heard but it isn't quiet. It sounds similar to a house vacuum maybe a tad bit louder. It is really nice but all Ridgid shop vacs are and depending on the size you need you could possibly save a little cash and get the 14 gallon which is the same vac but like I said in the video I would definitely choose this over any I have used.
