From the packaging, its supposed to reduce particulates being blown out the exhaust, nothing to do with sound reduction.
@TysonHook-22-10 күн бұрын
From the name "diffuser" it implies its suppose to diffuse sound... "Sound diffusion is the process of spreading sound waves evenly throughout a space. It's used to make sound more natural and consistent, and to reduce the impact of standing waves and resonances." The thing is theres a huge misconception between sound dampening and sound diffusion... most folks dont actually know what sound diffusion is and they wrongly assume it to be the same thing as sound dampening. I find these shopvac diffusers a must have personally... do they make your shopvac silent NO, do they significantly reduce the high pitch jet squeal of a shopvac ABSOLUTELY... plus the added bonus of not blowing crap around from the wide open exhaust port and theres forsure a slight decimal drop, nothing huge but enough that it will absolutely help reduce ear damage long term.

@truthbetold7170 Жыл бұрын
This is an "air" diffuser, not a sound dampener it is design to control the air flow out of the exhaust port not the noise. This helps in environments where you don't want a massive straight flow of air coming out the back of the machine while using it. Instead in helps to spread the flow of air in multiple directions. This is perfect for say a shop vac under a miter saw table pushed against a wall if you didn't have a diffuser the dust that piles up from not being sucked up would be more likely to stir up. With the diffuser it would minimize the dust from being kicked up that was left behind.

I find these diffusers to be an absolute must!... does it dampen the sound significantly NO, but it does drop the decimal level down slightly to the point of not feeling nearly as damaging to your ears when used without ear plugs... especially when using your shopvac in a confined space your ears will thank you!! A) diffusing the exhaust port means it doesnt blow around dust/debris like it does when its left fully open, there are situations like with drywall dust where the exhaust port being left wide open can be vary problematic. B) these diffusers do slightly lower the shopvacs decimal level, but more importantly to my ears it dampens the high pitch sound of my shopvac... theres a certain frequency hum/squeal sound that shopvacs seem to make that is vary irratating and headache inducing... ya know, that vary high pitch jet engine squeal... I personally found this diffuser essentially eliminates that annoying high pitch sound and makes my shopvac much more pleasent to be used indoors, again especially without ear plugs.... think of it as going from a deafening high pitch squeal to a load hum. When you look at these diffusers in hand theres really not much to them, its your basic vaccum plasitc tubing, some foam and a smooth cone horn shape... the cone horn is whats really doing the heavy lifting in noise reduction, not the skimpy open cell foam. I believe a lot of people have a misconception of what exactrly sound diffusion emplies... Sound diffusion is not the same thing as sound dampening, "Sound diffusion is the process of spreading sound waves evenly throughout a space. It's used to make sound more natural and consistent, and to reduce the impact of standing waves and resonances." when it comes to recording studios, home theatres etc a soundproof or sound dampening panel is vastly different in design compared to a sound diffuser panel... both change the way sound interacts with a room but in vary different manners. A sound dampener will directly absorb and cancel specific frequencies ranges as intended from low, mid to high and reflect the non targeted frequencies back into the space A sound diffuser doesnt absorb it only reflects or scatters sound in a way that reduces bad sound elements and frequencies... diffusers can also be designed to target a certain range of frequencies.. Essentially a diffusers changes the way sound interacts with a surrounding space, whereas a sound dampener eliminates sounds entirely from a space. in other words a diffuser is not gonna silence your shopvac, but it will change the way it sounds to be more pleasent and easier going on your ears... like a speaker cone or woofer port, these little diffusers are directing the sound released out of the exhaust port in a specific way to achieve a certain sound signature/tone frequency.... which again, is largely a reduction in the highest fequency range of the shopvac along with some slight dampening of the overall sound. bottom line i found there to be a noticable enough improvement that id never go back to not using one. Id like to see companies further improve upon shopvac diffusers... rigid appears to have a new model that ive seen on one of there NXT wallmount shopvacs that looks much more low profile and sleek but havent seen the new rigid diffuser being sold seperately anywhere yet... there are for sure more tricks from the world of sound engineering that can be used to further diffuse and dampen the noise of a shopvacs exhaust port.

If it works good and dont restrict the air flow too much, it would be a nice thing to have, the air blowing out is really strong, well it is used for a blower, but what is nice is when you turn it on, it will not blow dust around the shop as much, like you might have saw dust all over your woodworking tools and if that blast hits it, it will be bad, it think if you keep that filter clean it would work good.

Since this video other people have also done this experiment and are pretty much having the same experience. The original description is still on Amazon but not on the Home Depot site.
