Shaq put Orlando on the map. Yes he only spent 4 years there, but he took em to 2 ECF and an NBA Finals and was a dominant force all 4 years. Not to mention the Magic are not the Lakers or Celtics, they don't have 17 banners hanging up, they don't have a history of winning. If Shaq did that in a Lakers or Celtics jersey, he'd never get his jersey retired. But cause he did it in Orlando, it's a big deal for them. It's not as egregious as they're making it out to be.

As a child of the 90s I don’t think people understand how popular the Charlotte hornets and Orlando Magic were in the early-mid 90s. Shaq and Penny were the faces of the league behind MJ at the time. I think this is a situation where its more about the lack of historical talent of the Magic than it is the legacy of Shaq. They haven't had enough players to really retire a number (Penny and Dwight possibilities) so Shaqs 4 years are the best they can do
