We've been on the Nosferatu train for a while. That bit of news about Eggers enlisting a glass company to manufacture a special filter so he can achieve a unique color palette (sorta like Cameron developing novel cameras for Avatar and Nolan having Kodak create a black-and-white IMAX stock for Oppenheimer) is going to make for some great FYC featurettes.

With all due respect, I don’t agree with the thought that they won’t take Dune: Part II seriously. If the Academy wasn’t taking the Dune franchise seriously, the first won wouldn’t have won six Oscars. I think Villeneuve’s snub in ‘21 was the result of one of two things (or a mix of both): 1) Directors Branch members feeling Villeneuve was a lock and therefore giving their nomination votes to other directors; or 2) Directors Branch members felt it was the first half of the Dune movies and therefore wanted to wait until Part 2 was released to see if he stuck the landing and nominate him then if it succeeded. And when you consider how well Part 2 was received, combined with how it may not be the strongest year for the Best Director category, he’s a lock for a nomination and is still the front runner for me (and you also have Cameron and Spielberg already singing his praises, so he will absolutely have advocates this year, too). The only thing that could hinder things is if the branch views Dune: Messish as “part three” of a trilogy. That said, Joker 2 does look incredible and will likely be a formidable opponent, but we’ll have to see if Todd Phillips’ ambitions succeed fully. But again, if the Academy can take two comic-based Joker movies seriously (with the discourse the first had), and a fantasy trilogy of LOTR seriously, I think they’ll take Dune: Part 2 seriously.

I'd have Kinds of Kindness somewhere in the top 13 in cinematography, most predictors seems to be counting out that movie completely but Robbie got in pretty comfortably for both his movies with Yorgos (arguably 2nd place for both) and the teasers look great with 3 distinct cinematography styles, including black and white.

That very well could be that "wildcard" non-best picture type nomination this category has been accustomed to -D

How many nominations do you think Dune: Part Two will get at the Oscars? I think it will get 10 nominations.

I do not get Dune for sound. It was overwhelming to me and headache inducing. That does not seem incredible to me. I was glad Oppenheimer lost because that movie caused the same thing. Why does the loudest win? Also, curious what horror movie you have in best picture!
