Catered to the amateur, this is still a well spoken and presented segment.

those fuel tank/fairing kits cost about 2,000. total bill on a fully prepared dakar bike comes in at 70,000$ and that is without logistics and spare parts. I am glad to see honda motorcycles back in dakar these last few year. the honda CRF250L Rally is a dakar style street legal bike that tries to mimic the ability of a dakar bike at a low price point.

I feel like the water jug on the bike could be very dangerous if you start to use it when it gets to half level wouldn’t it throw the balance of the bike off due to sloshing water?
@secretsolddad5 жыл бұрын
half level of 3 liters is 1.5 liters is 1.5kg based on the bottom of the bike, the effect is negligable :) If you ponder further about your question then what about the fuel tanks which carry a lot more weight.. So potential danger of the water jug on the bike is a non issue ;)

I wish he explained that rolling paper navigation device.
@Brand-yk6dw3 жыл бұрын
roll of paper in the nav tower is called a Roadbook its given by the even organizer before the run; its kinda like a regular rally car pace notes but because its all desert there's no set road its just land so they use noticeable land depictions on what to look (example: "if you see a cactus in a sand dune your halfway there") but in shortened and sometimes words in acronyms for in order to give you a general area of where you are they are normally written or acronym in french. along with that is the type of terrain and what to avoid such as large dips or hard to spot bumpy crest hills that can flip all vehicles if you speed over one or to follow breaks in between hills that cant be climbed. in that case you'll see them marked by the driver in different highlights in order to prioritize what's dangerous and what to follow most. the numbers on each of the notes tells what distance marker your at along with an electronic distance marker on your nav tower there's usually 2 notes at a time to tell what you pass and what to expect next in case your lost or went too far and missed a checkpoint. within the nav tower are the electronics; usually 2 distance trackers for the road book to you exactly how far you've traveled but not uncommon for only 1 but it doesnt give you the general area. the GPS given by organizers shows where you are you but only generalize cause thats why its your job is to navigate of course but will give you one ping of your direction and location exactly once you pass your mandatory checkpoints which are set to act as your waypoints so for your loose guide through the endless sand so you can easier manage your nav and focus on your best line from each checkpoint till you get to the end of the stage

@shewcrafter2 жыл бұрын
I know you made this comment a year ago, but modern 450 race bike engines make a surprising amount of power, especially compared to your standard 650 dual sport. A Honda CRF450 makes about 53 hp, vs the XR650L, which makes 40 hp. Granted, the XR650R makes about 60, but any 650 will weigh more than a 450, and weight is a big deal in enduro/rally. Either way, the Dakar regulations limit engine size for bikes to 450cc

How is the handlebar navigational equipment expensive? I was expecting some LED multipoint touchscreen with anti-glare features or something advanced, but it's a piece of paper and two monochrome gauges? I don't see what you would need other than a GPS transponder and maybe a backup one, or require the riders to carry a satellite phone. There should be no reason the whole navi should cost more than a few hundred.
@harryWRC6 жыл бұрын
root It's far more complicated than that, actually. For starters,the Nav. Tower is made of Carbon Fibre. Then, the road book is held inside this display which enables the electronic advance of the instructions (called tulips) of the road book. That is, forward advance and retraction to previous toulip, through switches on the left handlebar. Then there are a couple of GPS transponders (Iritrack and a backup one) which are of the expensive kind. Then there is the "Sentinel", a device that picks ups nearby competitor vehicles and creates a noise to notify the rider. I' m pretty certain I am omitting some of the devices hooked to the tower. All these deevices shall be made to withstand extreme cold (they pass through some bolivian regions which currenlty have 0oC temperatures) and extreme heats (in Argentina, temperatures upwards of 50oC are common, this time of year), constant bashing, rain, fine dust, mud. Hence the cost. But even removing all electronic devices, just designing an ASO rule book compliant CF nav. tower should be a rather expensive exercise, I believe.

“Americsn riders,” hmm, from which country? There are many riders from different American countries. Because is case you did not know, there is no country named America. America is the name of a continent since 1507. Hundreds of years before the US became a country. Of course the one continent has now been divided into two continents, with an imaginary subcontinent called Central America, by the empire of the US. In reality, ANYONE born is ANY country in America is an American. Period, like it or not! The nice thing is that there is a movement (small but growing - started by truly yours) of people all over America reclaiming our rightful title of Americans. And in the next year to two years I’ll be taking that message through the rest of America (Mexico, Central, and South America) in person, no ot just on line. So, I assume that you were with Unitedstatian (a real word is Spanish, Estadounidenses) riders. Cool!
