In case anybody is wondering, the air compressor was to pressurise the telephone cables for the exchange to keep water out of them. Lines for it would have fed to all the cables entering and leaving the bunker to connect the exchange via 500+ core cables. A common practice (even today) is to pump pressurised air into them so the pressure inside them is higher than the ground outside so no water will seep in through joins etc.

You should ask to visit some of the plane wreckers. They’re scrapping a lot of Boeing 747s which have dumb waiters on board between the main deck and upper deck.

I have actually recently come across one of these lifts, it was made by the Czechoslovakian lift company Transporta, who made a lot of the paternosters and old lifts in Czechoslovakia by the way!

They've spent an age on getting it right, have those foreign powers. The colours of the walls, the rash of red warning signs, the so artfully placed piles of stuff they could have grown over several decades of reality. It's very cleverly done this British quasi-secret organisation's second headquarters' back-office. The one thing, the only big thing that lets it all down is the industrial machinery. Not so much that there's so much near the offices for ease of access etc. &c. No. It's the East German Orange colour paint. A bit like an old Fiat Cinquecento. You never see one but once you do...
