Riding - Cobblemon Dev Log

While we're uncertain what features will make it into our 1.7 update, we have been working on a lot of big features simultaneously, including riding your Pokémon! Although there has been a massive amount of work done on this feature, there's still a long way to go before you're able to take to the skies. Hopefully this video highlights the ambitions we have for this feature and gets you excited for what is to come in Cobblemon's future!

Now we need flocks of bird Pokemon that fly in the sky to increase immersion when riding Pokemon.

That would be a good immersion factor, but I feel like it wouldn't be a priority, but if it does happen, then it should be a toggle feature and function like clouds instead of mobs (this is so weaker computers could breathe, and so the flock doesn't count towards the entity limit)

@IronPikachu724but then you couldn't catch the Pokémon when you fly up to them- immersion breaking!! Instead, when Cobblemon haven't spawned in for the chunks you've loaded yet, also factoring height from spawn locations, the game should consider spawning a flock instead, as if you are standing still, the flock will leave as quickly as it came, resulting in the entities being available for normal spawns once again shortly after unless you're moving too fast for them anyway, as in riding a mount.

i think they're just using the do a barrel roll mod's camera system and porting it over to rideable pokemon, but i can be wrong, either way massive prop's to the cobblemon modders

The fact that you created a whole new camera system and are doing your best to make different ride styles for different Pokémon is absolutely mental! Love seeing the DevLogs that are put out, it's just massive quality over quantity and makes me incredibly happy with how immersive the Cobblemon Team is making the mod, I can just feel the passion and love for this project through the video!

You can tell just from these small clips how much love and care they put into making this mod. The fact that they are making the flying dynamic when they could have just just made it like pixelmons(not trying to compare in effort) shows that love for the mod so well.

It'd be neat if you could change the way the player is sat on the pokémon. Like having the player riding Charizard the same way hiccup does with toothless. I have absolutely no knowledge in programming in minecraft and if it's even possible or if you already considered it but I'm sure it'd be a massive plus for the immersion of the players. Anyway, I just can't wait to have access to this feature, you're achieving so much works it's incredible. I really love your work, keep up like that !!!!

ngl i think blocks/s would be better than blocks/tick that way players with minimap waypoints seeing the distance can roughly calculate the amount of time it will take from their current position to their goal

i think the blocks per tick counter may be a separate mod and not a feature that will be in base cobblemon but i cannot say for sure

The creator of "Do a Barrel Roll" Enjarai has also made a mod that lets use similiarly swim under water that mod is called "Rolling Down in the Deep", it would be cool if that mod was used for riding in water and submerging under water. It would be cool to ride like a Milotic under the water. Great work from the dev team.

The camera works a little weird, but it's cool that you finally make it possible to ride Pokémon, it remains to make sure that your Pokémon protect you, just like in the game addon, when scavs can attack you if you hit them, and your Pokémon attack other mobs.

We got Cobblemon Rider as an alternative for now (since pokemon riding is planned to be coming in a future update, the side mod might retire from future versions after that update happens), but this riding system seems to be amazing so far. Keep up the great work guys at the Cobblemon Dev team!

This looks really neat! I've never particularly been a fan of Do A Barrel Roll, but this system seems like just the right thing to set Pokémon flight apart from Elytra gliding! I think I much prefer your implementation, too, the camera seems much snappier here compared to the cinematic camera esque smoothness of DABR.

This looks fantastic, and I am very excited for this. However, and maybe it's just me, but I feel like simply being able to fly on almost any large sized flying Pokemon seems a bit too easy/overpowered, so I hope there's some method of unlocking it. Like having to find/craft a special saddle or something. Maybe I'm the only one who would care though, idk. Either way, loving how this mod is progressing.

Riding Pokémon is probably one of the things the devs hear from players A LOT. Despite us being a but annoying, it's really good to know they aren't just making it simple and giving us whatever just works. Cobblemon is seriously among the greatest of all time and it's not even finished yet.
