I think Jesse has a fair point in trying bitless! And it’s always great to have a foundation bitless as well. My philosophy is that if you can do it without a saddle or bit you can def do it with! He could also be anxious about the complexity a bit has so a hack could be reassuring for his basics.

Oh my dear! Just look at how long Matt’s legs are. His spur is well below this horse’s barrel. His position is excellent. My only observation is that this fine stallion has not learned how to follow the rein to the ground. When Matt gives in the rein for the horse to follow the rein down, the horse is stuck in his neck and at the poll as Matt remarked early on. He probably has not developed “swing” in his back either. It’s too early in his training and muscle development, but what a beautiful animal.

Hi Matt, Your new horse really is doing well. He seems to be stepping well under himself - but with lots of relaxation. He isn't overbending too much and I think that as he gets fitter and fitter he will come to a great natural body shape and his head will spend more time in the verticle position. You wouldn't want to lose the relaxation he already has. He is working well into the corners and I love his walk and would do a bunch of exercises at the walk until he gets a bit fitter. People tend to underestimate the importance of the walk but that's where all the rest of the work begins. When you get a couple of really nice steps at the trot make sure you reward Etro with a bit of a walk so that he always knows that you have appreciated his effort. Right now he is depending on you to drive him with your voice, hips, heels and whip. Always use the least strong aid that gets you what you want - a soft active stride. Better two good ones rather than five 'so so' ones - or any 'rushed steps'! I love this horse's good nature! He is not only beautiful but he also seems to be a 'Happy Guy' who really likes to be working. How does he do outside? If he is not 'difficult' outside the arena, he might think a short walk around the neighbourhood was a good reward for working so cheerfully in the arena! People often 'overprotect' their stallions when they are actually the horses that most enjoy 'getting out for a short stroll'! I used to use a Gray TB stallion as my regular ride during classes and after a lesson when I took the students and their horses out of the arena for a walk on quiet roads and trails. He was a great help as we usually travelled 'behind the herd' and even the laziest gelding in the lot knew that the stallion behind him would not appreciate 'sudden stops for a bite of grass'. The stallion would swing the crest of his neck in the direction of any 'slow-poke' that would take advantage of a young rider who was having difficulty keeping their horse's nose out of the tasty grass!

It’s really awesome to see the progress you and Etro have made together! 💛As far as the lip flapping trait, it’s really hard to know if the bit would play a role in it or not. Like you said, for right now it would probably be best to keep riding him with the bit since that’s what he’s used to, and it could potentially stress him out more if he’s suddenly switched to bit-less. There was a horse at my old barn, who most likely had neurological issues and he very frequently did the lip-flapping thing despite being ridden in a bosal hackamore. He was also a head-shaker and had a tendency to be very explosive when ridden, he was the horse responsible for giving me my concussion a few years ago. So I can definitely say that even though I’m all for riding bitless, if Etro seems to be working better in a bit now then I definitely think you’re making the right decision by sticking with what he’s used to 👍

Beautiful work! I agree with you about not warming up with too much trot. I was told by my horse's body worker to canter earlier in my warm-ups than I was doing. It is easier for them to loosen up their lumbar and have some "schwung" in the canter than in the trot. You know when you are developing a green horse, when you start to ask for more with the trot and they break into the canter? Cantering can be easier but we often overlook using it in the warm up. Very well done!

Etro is beautiful! His neck is gorgeous. I think the styling of his mane made it even more so. Meg was right about leaving the forelock free. I would really love to see a video in which Matt rides both Etro and Emporio. I think it would be really interesting to show Emporio in for example, the trot, then cut to Etro in the trot. Then the same with all identical tasks. The comparison being so immediate would be very interesting, and when what is happening is being narrated, it gives the novice a better idea of the finer points of what is actually happening. As someone who grew up on my horse’s back with absolutely no instruction and riding bareback 90% of the time, I could learn so much by seeing those direct comparisons and listening to the descriptions. All I see now are two stunning horses ridden by a knowledgeable handsome guy. I can tell the difference between trot and canter, but I’m totally clueless about any of the intricacies that are being described. Besides, I miss seeing Emporio. I don’t remember which video/videos I have seen this in besides this one, but the connection between Jesse and Etro is quite strong. Especially since I assume Jesse doesn’t spend anywhere near the time with Etro that Matt does. I love seeing those natural empathic connections between certain people and certain animals. @SallyGreenaway2 жыл бұрын
I'm similar! I started following about 3 months ago too and also concur that the videos are wonderful on this channel seeing how he works with his horses and what the horses' lives are like! I think the reason why stallions tend to be preferred is partially tradition but also because many of the movements in dressage originate from natural behaviours/movements that stallions do with their mares at mating time or competing with other stallions for the right to mate. The personality exhibited during these inter-herd and inter-horse interactions is very expressive and their personalities really come out very physically, and this is how humans wanted to be able to ask for these behaviours on command, especially the kicking and leaping options for battle in military use. Then it eventually became a sport called dressage.

We are not on the same level as you guys but the basics are the same. More reign and more leg in the beginning to elongate and then picking them back up.

He's absolutely charming, pretty as a little Dales pony. I notice in the warm up when he starts cantering from a walk he takes off using just his front legs, throwing his fron legs forward rather than pushing from behind in one movement. So maybe not untill he is working more from behind. Otherwise he's as super relaxed as anything. In fact the tempo in the warm up is far too slow still as he isn't opening up his frame much and going big and long as he needs to. This is because he doesn't have the tempo to do it. He's going to make a lovely what they call ladies horse as he is just so laid back and gentle never doing more than he is asked. Isn't just crazy that every horse bought in Spain is a project horse. You always have to start from the basics untill you even know what you're ridding.

You are doing wonderful with him! He is learning to respond to your commands very quickly! Has he had this kind of training in Spain? You will make a great team! He is Beautiful!!

I love him! That big neck and the way he holds his head is very beautiful. He's so smooth and still so strong. It's really a pleasure to watch him move! Don't you think that the weight loss is just enough to smooth out the slight muscle bulk from before? He is gorgeous and my favorite on-line horse to follow! Thanks, Matt. ☺️

He has such a powerful and beautiful head. He was really showing trust towards you before you took him into the training letting you hold his nose and obviously enjoying it. No sign of nervousness or tension with you in the training pen.

Not qualified to comment but thank you for such an inspiring video. Being able to see how your riding influences the horse plus your commentary is just great.

He looks great. I think he’s coming along nicely and I see the connection between you and him. It’s so beautiful. I did get a glimpse of him in the red gear and he looks absolutely stunning in it.

Matt you look so great on him, maybe it’s the black riding outfit but you looked like you were made for each other!

I am not a horseperson, but watching this horse is mesmerizing. What a gorgeous boy. I have no idea what Matt was talking about, again not a horseperson, but I watched this entire clip just looking at a horse.

Matt you are looking amazing on Etro he seems to be listening well and I can see that it’s a soft ride and I believe he is enjoying it. I can tell that the work you have been doing is amazing I can see the diff Dr ence in the ride and his neck looks softer and you do not have to guide him as much. He is catching on to you. Your an amazing trainer of horses much respect for a job well done. Keep up the great work!

Wow! Definitely looking good. Sometimes his front leg comes out of alignment in his trot when its in the air, like it goes out to the side a bit and he is not doing that as much anymore. He is so handsome! All your horses are so special!! Love the way u and yessa treat them as well. Give us an update on sweet Sorreno. Has he found a nice forever home yet?
