Toilets don’t stop working when the power goes out and water pressure is created by gravity. Water storage in the tub is a precautionary thing in the event that water pressure is disrupted by a water tower being damaged. Glad you guys are safe!
@loriplate729Күн бұрын
I was going to say the same thing, unless you are on a well system then you have a pump. Most cities do not have well and septic, those are usually in rural areas.
@erinronnfeldt9327Күн бұрын
It all depends on what kind of water system you have or if it runs on a pump. I live in SWFL and when our power goes out the pumps in our water will stop working or run at a super low rate. It’s different state by state. I used to live in the Midwest and this wasn’t an issue.

You never want to make a claim on your insurance or make any contact with your insurance about home damage unless the damages significantly exceed your deductible. Why? Because any claim will raise your future rates and any suggestion of damage makes you high risk in the insurance company's eyes. Particularly in Florida!
@KylePalIoКүн бұрын
Huh never thought about it like that.
@dominiquebrown8790Күн бұрын
As a former insurance agent, 100% agree. In Florida your hurricane deductible is probably 2% of your dwelling (that's how most agents write policies unfortunately) so keep that in mind.

Water doesn’t turn into ice in Florida so wet ground around a foundation isn’t as big a deal as places where the ground can freeze. Plus no basement for water to leak in to. Plus plus the water table is very high in Florida, so foundations are almost always wet.

Just for the future, your toilet isn't affected by power. It's a basic valve in the toilet - when you flush, it releases the water in the cistern and gravity pulls it down. If you lose water, the cistern won't automatically refill so you can use the water to manually flush instead. Just chuck a bucket full into the bowl. Still watching but very glad to see in the comments you both are safe and sound. Scary stuff!

Hurricanes are very eerie. I live in New Jersey and will never forget hurricane Sandy. The noises I heard at night were unimaginable. I’ve never seen so much destruction in my life and I’m 2 hours away from the Jersey shore. We had no power for 2 weeks and it took us 3 days to get to my grandparents house that had a generator and it’s usually only a 30 min drive. That storm was so devastating and historical and was wayyy worse than what you experienced in your video. I’m shocked this was the worst uve experienced. Glad you’re good and pray for the people on the coast.
@susanbarnett761Күн бұрын
Please get a generator and a camping grill for the lanai. We've done that for every hurricane. If you space the sandbags a few inches apart you might have been able to stretch them and not much water would enter as water takes the path of least resistance. You left far too much area for the water the way you spaced the bags.
@juliekm6495Күн бұрын
Kyle in future you might want to find a good solid generator and look at putting some solar panels on the roof! Couldn’t hurt! You and Casey stay safe! I have relatives in Miami and Jacksonville, Fl. Saying prayers for all of you!

A future improvement would be to place underground drains to route the water from your side and back yard out to the street. Get your neighbors to do this as well. Builders should be required to do this when they build so close together. Also don't even call your insurance unless you really need to. Call your agent before you call insurance. I'm glad you made it through ok.

As previously stated, I do claims for Allstate. No one ever takes my advice, but here goes anyway. At some point you need to check your gutter straps and make sure they are still tight. If you heard banging all night from your gutters, there is a chance the straps may have loosened. Just double check to be sure.

the safest place for a tornado in your house is probably the garage since its constructed with concrete block. the weak point is the big garage door but that locks.
