Riding San Francisco's steepest Muni route

When Muni operator Randi Scott is piloting the 67 Bernal Heights bus, her mantra to passengers is “hold on tight.”
“It feels like a roller coaster,” Scott said, laughing. “When I’m coming over (the hill) and down, you get that little feeling in your stomach. I have kids on the bus shouting, ‘Woooo!’
The 67 Bernal Heights is Bay Area transit’s best amusement park ride. According to a Chronicle analysis of every San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority line, the 67 conquers the steepest grade in the city’s bus system.

In New Zealand we have buses that have had gearboxes specifically designed for the steep hills of Dunedin and Wellington for ages!

Back in the day this was called the 23 Crescent. It was a short route that started at about 25th St. and Folsom and ended up just a couple of blocks from house on the other side of Bernal Heights. The whole ride start to finish was about 30 minutes.

$2.50 for a sub par bus is wild. LA has metro at $1.50, Japan $1.25

Eh it’s ight. $1.50 for transit that takes you to like two places in LA tho. LA has some of the worst public transit. Car is basically mandatory there. Tokyo now that’s just on a whole nother level. Known for its complexity, but that’s why you can get anywhere by train and why a train station is always nearby. It’s incredibly efficient

I think Muni ought to bring back the 53 Southern Heights too. That was another bus line that ran on steep hills.

That’s not how you calculate grades. Degrees ≠ grade. Ironically I can tell what grades you got in school

You are on a 17° grade. That’s over 30% grade. I measured Quintara between 15th and 16th Ave. It was 13° to 14°.

I know that hill i once raced a motorcycle and a bike messenger down that street on my skateboard caught some crazy air bearings where humming and my wheels practically melted off no idea who they where but hit powel station just zooming did what must have been the worlds longest power slide thru the crowd some girl froze in my path i stopped literaly inches from her and gave her a big kiss right in front of her bf eho said it was the coolest thing he ever saw and he wasn't even mad that i kissed his girl
