Ian, Outstanding doco by you. And very realistic We rode the Sailors Corner segment both ways between Omarama along Benmore and toward Kurow two weeks ago. It is an absolute highlight for any one wanting to mtb explore NZ.

A lovely film Ian... it brought back great memories of my ride there in February 2020. The cliffside path wasn't open then and that looks to be a great improvement!

Great video! Which software did you use to show the daily routes? The topographic effect is amazing!

I am planning on doing this ride with my daughter so this is a really helpful video...thanks! We will be starting at the very beginning of October so I am a little worried about the weather but it looks pretty nice for you until day 6! What dates in October did you ride? How cold was it in the mornings and during the day?

Hope it’s a great ride for you and your daughter. We rode in the first week of October. It was chilly in the mornings, but warmed up pretty quickly. It wasn’t one of those winter rides where you can’t feel fingers and toes. I only used my warmest gear on the last day when it was super windy.

I love your video! ❤ We’re hoping to this trail next year. 😊 Very inspirational for us. And I really love your 3D maps you use to show your route. How did you make these overviews? Would love to learn from you 🙏🏼 Kind regards from The Netherlands!

Thanks and good luck on your trip. I’m sure you’ll love it. I used Google Earth Studio for the map overviews. It allows you to import a path. There’s an even better animated path that I put in my best Queenstown adventure video. But it’s so much work I don’t think I’ll do that again.

I loved your video and well documented journey. I'm going in 6 weeks and wanted to ask if you think doing it over 3 days is doable. I ride and know I can ride 100km a day on roads. I am wondering if you could give me some advice. I'm thinking of riding it in these stages - Day 1: Lake Tekapo to Lake Ohau - 93km and easy (I read on the webstie). Day 2 Ohau Lodge to either Otematata or Kurow - this would be a 144km ride (with easy and intermediate riding guide) - I am wondering what you think since you have riden this section and know what the intermediate guide would entail. Day 3 Kurow to Omaru - 81km easy/intermediate. I am short on time hence thinking of this. Could you give me any advice on if you believe it is doable? Thanks Maria

Hey Maria. Thanks! Day 1 and 3 sound doable. Day 2 will be a big day, with favourable winds along lake Aviemore you should be able to get in lateish to Kurow. The gravel and single track sections will slow you down a bit, but it sounds like you’re up for the challenge. Best of luck with the weather. Let us know how you go.

We rode the A2O back in 2018, 5 days, third day we did Lake Ohau to Otematata, but about 70km, not 144km I think However looking back we all thought it would have been better to take longer and stop at Omarama. You miss a fair bit if you just rush thru

Its not a race. The more time you can spend on the trial the better to take in all the wonderful scenery and experiences, after all thats what it is all about.

Day 1: Lake Tekapo to Lake Ohau - 93km - check if the weir is open. If not the shuttle bus around to the weir is required. Still an easy day. Day 2 - for you will be limited speed from where the track goes into the hills, until passed Benmore.
