Riding the back of a Hurricane 💨⛵😬 + Our Downwind Pole Setup -Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 308

Sailing SV Delos

Sailing SV Delos

Күн бұрын

We test our limits as sailors by riding the back of a hurricane down the coast of New England! A hurricane is passing to our east and we decide to ride the north winds the low creates as it passes by to make a jump south. In anticipation of a rough sail ahead we rig our downwind poles to catch as much wind as possible. The weather is cold and the wind is blowing but we're under control and making good miles, but realize just how tough it is to sail with a baby in these types of conditions.
Thank you for all the support and if your new here please subscribe it helps us out A LOT! Much love! Kazza, Brian and little Sierra

It's been amazing watching y'all all these years from two brothers on this adventure to now a true life style and raising a family and continuing to the next chapter. You have kept it fun and interesting to watch along the way and continue to do so. And it's also amazing no matter where you go total stranger's show with gifts, or help, or just to say hello. And best of all you keep is real. It's not always fun and adventure and people should know that. Every day is a challenge, some not so bad, some not so good. Take care.

Some rough weather an unpleasant ride and an unhappy nugget.... makes the sail to Reunion Island on Madagascar 2.0 look like a joy ride. In a couple of years Sierra will be able to understand to chill but right now the next 2 years are going to be rough especially as she learns to communicate and express herself with words instead of crying. Not to mention when she is starting to cut molars it will be even more fun fun fun!!! Gets some baby oragel for sure! Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, we defenitely are changing our tactics for passages as Sierra evolves. It was a TON easier before she was mobile and could walk. I have a feeling it's also going to get tougher before it gets easier.... We'll just continue to evolve ourselves and plans as she does.

They are doing great. Babies soak up way more info and knowledge than people think. Little kids can't "operate" it, but later their brain has "connection points" (=> intelligence). Though, I wonder about the phase of Nugget, when she probably will be more interested in dolls and unicorns than sailing skills :)

That's a sweet two-pole setup, there, Delos! "I'm listening to a podcast about time..." Cool. I spent years on physics forums discussing time. Ironic, isn't it? Ah, yes... Baby on board. Our little tyke was two when we received orders to head overseas. Quite the trip! Alas, we didn't have the pleasure of figuring out how to sail with him aboard. I don't envy the challenge before you, but I can indeed relate. Having watched you for a number of years, I also know you'll weather that task, as well.

Hey guys! Thanks for trying to reach out, indeed during pandemic I am isolated with my parents in sunny Boca Raton, Florida. They are around your parents age too so I worry for them if they should get this. I do not go out nor even worked /gotten paid in a year, uuug . As an IT guy also I usually make decent monies but now must scrimp and save it. As stated though I am in S. FL, if there's anything I may do for you, Please do not hesitate to ask. Boca Raton(obviously a port there) so easy transfer of sht to boat is there. Again, be well!!!

My granddaughter is 3, and over the last 2 years I'm amazed by how much energy she has, and how much time her parents spend trying to keep up with her. It's just gotta be just that much more difficult in a moving sailboat, so I understand Kazza's frustration. I'm hoping that now you're back in quieter waters things have calmed down a bit, but I guess we'll see as the episodes unfold.

How many years has it been before you showed us the dark arts of the pole? That's the best explanation of how to rig the pole in the history of youtube. As for kids... Shit! We're all old with children now and no one looks forward to the kids waking up when they're that age. Just wait until you get jumped up and down on for Christmas at 3.00am. It's awesome.

High 5 Brian. Keep up the good spirit. The boat is like a rock in the water. Really good how you stay high spirited. High 5. Kazza kids at that age are a hand full. Soon she will take a watch. Kazza to be on backside of hurricane sucks. Remember the south indian ocean. PS believe me if you were in an apt same thing. Right now baby is high maintainance. But it will pass. I’m a long time fan and a long time sailor. I sailed the world in my 20s got off the boat for ten years to have a family then slowly became a weekend sailor. Now I’m 56 and heading back out to hit all the islands I missed, I feel Kazzas pain. I’d suggest a few new crew members to ease the sails or a more permanent area to sail and call home. Being miserable at sea is depressing and not a healthy place to sail. The ocean will never be far away.

Time I passed since this footage was filmed. I hope you’ve brought someone on B board to help out with passages. If a parent says it’s easier to sail in gnarly conditions than to care for a baby in a semi-tossy seaway, that’s more stress than necessary. I hope Sierra is able to adapt to tough seas, or you two get help on passages. Best to head to calmer waters at any rate, which you were attempting to do. This, from a mom. Been there in my own way. Much love to the Trautmans.

Hey. I don't know if it's realistic for sailing(below deck?) but when our daughter CONSTANTLY wanted to be held we put her in the backpack and my wife was able to work hands-free in the kitchen. And the starting pistol just went off! I'll start off at the end. Kazza, I think you need a crew member/nanny to help with Sierra. Or a crew member to do your watches and help Brian. As you obviously know, dealing with a little one is a full time job. Now, back to the beginning! : - ) The weather sure looked nicer at that point. About those poles, what you have there is a fancy/complex set up for doing wing on wing - but by using only head sails! When I'm sailing down wind I do wing on wing without any pole(s). But then I use my jib and main. Balance is the key to keeping the jib inflated without a pole. But it was nice to see the details of how you set up your BIG foresail "scoop"! That can produce a lot of sail area! BTW - Does the Nugget actually know how to get to New Jersey? lol And, man, do you have lots of guys on your sailboat! Four guys on each side?!?! They must be invisible because that would make 11 people on Delos and I only see three! ; - ) Boy, at 13:11 Karin looks sooooo tired! Then rough seas there at the end and a kind of cliff hanger! I'm already waiting for next Friday. 8 - )

Hey Guys, Thanks for the technical Lesson about sailing. It's really great to see what's going on from behind the scenes. It's not all fun and games and that's what makes it so challenging. Fantastic. That little one has stellar parents.
