We stopped at the restaurant at Elk City, it was actually quite good. The difficulty of the Macgruder varies depending on the previous winter’s snowfall. Great road with lots of babyhead size rocks.

Nice videos, SUBSCRIBED! I'm a long time dirt bike flatlander from MN but have upcoming retirement planned in Kamiah. Tried dual sporting on a KLR for a while. When I first heard about roads like Lolo & Magruder on my first Idaho trip 7 years ago the KLR was in MN. I was seeing the country, living like a nomad, for a couple weeks at a time in Walmart parking lots & camping. Just me and the little dog in a Honda Fit. Decided to get off the blacktop and start looking for for the beginnings of these MYTHICAL trails. Figured I would just drive as far as I could, and back out or turn around when the going got too rough. First try at Lolo ended a mile or 2 west of Rocky Ridge Lake when blocked by a snowbank I couldn't get around (in July). Have since driven the entire Lolo & Magruder corridor in the FIT. At times stopping to move rocks out of the way or throw then into holes like the one that broke your wrist. Just enough of a ramp to ease the tires through the obstacle. Have also driven the Elk City Wagon Road, Custer Motorway, Hells Canyon via Kleinschmidt grade, Riggins to Burgdorf via French Creek Road then to Warren and Yellow Pine, and out to New Meadows. The FIT is my pup tent on wheels, it has many rock scratches on the bottom side and it's a lot of crawling along at 5 mph. An afternoon ride on a bike is a 2 day trip in the car, but my little dog is my family and she goes where I go! I've sort of adapted the cross country / overland / and dual sport concepts to something that works for us. I can't wait to leave this god forsaken Midwest for Idaho!

Thanks so much! Kamiah is so gorgeous and is surrounded by some of the BEST riding slab AND dirt. I love that you adapted your adventure rig to suit your needs! That is awesome! So now that I know you've done Lolo Motorway and Magruder in your FIT, do you agree with my opinion that the Lolo Motorway is more difficult than the Magruder? :P

As the Magpie Flies , Lolo for sure worse than Magruder! There was one uphill going west on Lolo where I would have turned around, except I knew what was behind and didn't want to go back over it either. That was where I spent a good hour moving rocks, filling the ruts, and generally fixing the road before hitting the gas & bouncing my way up the hill.

Hi! my husband and I just found your old video while looking around YT at our normal summer haunts. As someone who "lives around here" I can answer that question. It's actually fairly straight forward: most folks around here are supported by government help. Eg SSI SSDI or retired. But! as you noticed in Kamiah where you slept there is the mill you slept next to in the park and also there is now a mine opening as of last year in Elk City, so the job potential has increased around here. Don't get me completely wrong, some of us do work, but we commute out of here to work. There are slowly openings for jobs coming available around here. I answer you with this much detail bc you took the time to leave Oregon to come to our area and I think that's awesome. We spend weeks on Road 500 (what we locals call the LoLo motorway) every year (picked 23 gallons of huckleberries last year) (sorry you hurt your wrist up there! the road can be tricky!) and also other various other haunts we love around here including the Elk City Wagon Road, Lookout Butte, Coolwater Mountain, Lochsa and Selway river camping, 7 Devils down in Riggins, LoLo Creek/Elk River/North Fork of the Clearwater area...I could go on! lol there's much to enjoy around here and we live here bc of this exact fact. Making a living..well..we have to commute! but it's all good. A few years ago I commuted 160 miles per day. Makes for a tired drive after work. Such as it goes! Great video and happy travels :) Cheers!

It was a nice road :) I think the thing for me was, that everyone had worked it up to me so much that when I got there I was kind of like "oh this really isn't that bad, what were they talking about?" lol My effort was to try and share that it really is just a nice road to ride, not some kind of obstacle course that some of the forums make it out to be. I hope you do get to ride it! And enjoy it for what it is, a beautiful mountain pass.

We always seem to be in the same area of idaho around the same time. I was in Kamiah on July 20-21. I have always thought of cutting across there and pass on highway 12. I checked on Saturday with the Lolo ranger station about riding the motor way. They reported it was closed. I found out later it was open. 😐. Thank you for sharing the area! And the free camping in Kamiah. That mill is noisy at night😩. The hotel Clearwater across the way was 88 dollars a night this year. And free breakfast and wifi. Plus rooms are clean and nice for the area.
@AstheMagpieFlies
@AstheMagpieFlies 5 жыл бұрын
Lol right!? Ya the reports on Lolo can be conflicting, because they also discourage car/truck vehicle traffic. Best shot is to just head up that way lol it's still a beautiful ride up to the entrance. I have stayed there before, But ya know lol hotels aren't ideal for riding more miles on a budget. 😉 I'd rather get to ride that extra 2-300 miles and be a little uncomfortable for a night 😋

?? on hydration. Seeing that beautiful stream you rode along and your advice to hydrate... do you carry a "Life Straw" or some other purification device??
@AstheMagpieFlies
@AstheMagpieFlies 5 жыл бұрын
I do carry a Sawyer squeeze however the "stream" I rode passed was 15-20 miles before you hit Elk City lol the next water source that I could have used isn't until you're on the Montana side, so the section I ran out of water was up in the ridge where there is no water sources accessible from the road. I'm sure there's some little creeks I could have found if I had hiked a bit. Lol for the sake of ease, and not having to waste time filtering water it's just more efficient (as far as taking advantage of the daylight hours to see as much as possible) to bring what you need, in my opinion 🤷

Amanda.....two part question...... You've done Magruder, Lolo, Stanley, etc. Have you been through the near ghost town of Warren ID which is northeast of McCall? The Baum Shelter (formerly the Winter Inn) has a swiss mushroom burger that's fabulous. Also, you have gone from the anonymity of the pilgrimage to a KZbin celeb. Which do you prefer when on a trip? Meaning, can it sometimes be time consuming if people recognize you when you are trying to get where you are going or trying to get miles in? Maybe use the "change in traveler status" as a question for your next Q&A vid.
@AstheMagpieFlies
@AstheMagpieFlies 4 жыл бұрын
I have not been to Warren! Thanks for the tip! :D haha I wouldn't call myself a KZbin Celeb, lol I think Tim (Forty Times Around) probably has more issues being recognized than I do. Mostly I run across a handful of people at Motorcycle Events that may recognize me from my videos, or every once in a while someone will come into my day job at REI and be like "wait aren't you a moto youtuber" or something along those lines, but when I'm just travelling I've never been recognized on the road. So far anyway lol More than anything the change has been that when I'm posting on Instagram (since that's more real time than my youtube videos) I get people offering me places to stay which has saved my butt more than a few times lol I saved a solid grand, because through the connections I've made from the channel, I was able to stay with someone in Phoenix for a week for free while my bike got fixed. That could have cost a LOT of money if I had had to stay at a pay campground or a hotel. So in that way it's pretty awesome. There's always a downside, ya know a lot of people offer me a place to stay on my way to Montana but I'm terrible at explaining like 'hey I really just wanted to camp in the woods' and I'm always worried that people are offended when I don't take them up on their offers haha Overall I don't regret it at all because without this channel and the people who support me on Patreon, I wouldn't be able to travel nearly as much as I do now.

Sorry about the lame GoPro footage. I've been there, but definitely not with the same stakes as what you're looking at. I would have a difficult time choosing what footage to use if I had as much amazing video as you capture. Thank you!! I'm just trying to figure out what's happening to the codec, because it was fine for the last two videos, have you found that it might be the SD card?? Or amount of videos? Lol normally I use just about everything I record on my A7rii because all that footage is very intentional, but I just kind of shift through the GoPro stuff and use the highlights where the scenery is interesting enough to be different from the last clip and not be like "oh yup another section of the same old road" kinda stuff so I only use like 10% of all the helmet cam footage I shoot.

So, I had an issue with corrupted files, on my Hero5 Black, a few months ago. I tried doing an erase and reformat on my Mac every time I uploaded. That worked for a while, but then the problem resurfaced after a couple weeks. What's been working since, is using the GoPro mobile app to delete files and reformat. It's in the camera's settings when you connect to your camera. (Knock on wood) I have not an issue since I've started doing that. Good luck! 🤓👍

Fires! 🔥 In order to properly out out a fire you need to reduce the "fuel" source (hence the axe), then kill the flames with water (bucket) and soil (shovel). You're essentially making a soupy meds until you can put your hand int he soup mess and not feel any heat.
