It is a tragedy ... I have a feeling that he was just too big for the ride. 6'5" and 340 pounds, I know he was just 14 but a big guy and he had been denied access to other rides. From the video, you can see he was not properly restrained, there may also be a lack of due diligence on the part of the ride operators or a sensor failure. The only park ride I've seen to accommodate larger riders was Alpengeist at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. They have dedicated rows with larger restraints. Remember when the new Texas Giant had its accident? It was a larger woman who managed to cause a failure of the restraints. An issue to be worked on for sure and my sympathies to all involved in the IKON Park accident ...

I am now convinced there is a major design flaw in this ride. Yes, the weight of the unfortunate victim played a role, but more-so because of belly size affecting the angle of closure of the shoulder harness, but not the weight itself. I think everyone's assumptions when hearing of the incident, and certainly my own fears when riding similar drop-types rides, is that the harness is going to fail, fly open, and you're going to fly up out of your seat. This would leave one to believe that the over shoulder restraint is the primary/essential restraint, including riders themselves and certainly most young teenaged ride operators. It's the natural assumption. Looking at pictures of him harnessed in prior to take-off, watching the unedited video closely several times, hearing the report come out yesterday that his harness was indeed locked (contrary to what we first believed), and watching these videos, it is now very clear to me he slipped downwards from under the locked harness on deceleration of the ride toward the bottom given the relative force of the ride slowing and him continuing downward as well as his forward force from the tilt nature that the ride makes at the top. Because the angle of closure of the shoulder harness was so much larger due to his body habitus, it actually allowed room between the bottom of the shoulder harness and his seat for him to slip under. Yes, looking at his size, this seems improbable, but there is definitely enough room when viewing the pictures and video, particularly given the force directions. You can see at 06:43- 06:46 how the gentleman in the red shirt is thrusted down and forward upon the magnetic breaks of the ride kicking in. Two design features of the ride contributed to the accident (not to say he should have been allowed to ride at all). One is not having a between the leg either belt or support bar that locked in with the top bar would would prevent slippage of something from underneath. But moreso the other is the tilt forward at the top. If it was a traditional drop ride at a 90 degree seated angle, riders would be forced straight down into their seats at deceleration. Here, they are clearly forced down and forward given the tilted seat angle, leaving susceptibility to these accidents with larger angle shoulder closures. The reason I think there is some liability in the design is that a weight limit alone doesn't address this. A 290 lbs guy with a central/belly predominant obesity pattern may be equally susceptible even though under the weight limit. A large breasted female may be reluctant to press the shoulder restraints down far enough. Even a very skinny person who doesn't press the shoulder restraints down far enough (despite them being locked and properly restraining the upward force of the shoulder) could be susceptible to the same accident. The problem is in the public and operators lack of awareness of the downward and forward forces on deceleration inherent to this ride and the reality that the shoulder harness needs to also act as a lower body/pelvis harness, which is not at all intuitive. It's telling this happened in the first 4 months of operation. I think this is highly suggestive of an empiric design flaw. If it wasn't this unfortunate victim, I think another within a year or two would have experienced the same accident.

exactly. I've been seeing so many people not understand that it is the angle of the seat after tilting and force of the stop that is the issue not the restraint failing. It seems like even an extra lap bar wouldn't quite solve the problem and someone could still slide out. The only solution I'd see working is for riders to be sitting in a seat that is more bucket than seat so they are still supported from underneath even after the tilt...seems like the whole design is flawed and the seats need a complete re-design.

Take a look at the SEAT BELTS of BOTH rides.... The Slingshot has a secondary seatbelt w/a buckle, but the FREE FALL does "NOT", and that is a SAFETY HAZARD!!!!!... and that is why that kid was killed the other day because if the hydraulic harness is not secured, at least a secondary buckle clip can keep you in the seat.

The seatbelt would have to be extra strong to stop his body but yeah, maybe it would have saved him. Although ,with the position seatbelts on rides usually are (it's placed between legs), I think he would still have pretty bad injuries.

I can say one thing and it is not Funtimes fault for the kid dying, It is slingshot (the company that operate the rides) operating the rides at ICON park. It has been proven before last year with one of their slingshots snapping and with a technician falling to his death on the Orlando Starflyer.

I’ve noticed one thing on this ride they have no seatbelt to hold the seats , in England all rides have a safety seat but which locks the seat together so if anything worse happens we still have this built to hold a seat !!

Just saw the awful video of that poor boy falling out of this, it is clear before they went up though the harness was not keeping him safe, it may have been locked but there is a clear gap under where it should be resting on his legs due to his size, when the ride came to a slow he slipped out underneath the harness, why was there not any seatbelts on this to click into to make it safe/back up?

A kid just died on this ride. There’s a video on Facebook that shows the event. It is very graphic and explicit. U hear the guy pop like a balloon upon hitting the solid ground. Screams, yells, gasps. U are lucky you didn’t get hurt.

I just love insane freefall drop rides with the intensity which does IT Justice with a combo of the ride itself spinning Round getting spectacular Day/night views of the entire amazing parks especially the fireworks as an anded boonus, I’m exactly the same as you Shawn drop Towers never seem to fail to deliver with those awesome G’s, the drop tower does exactly what IT says on the ride even though we love the most intense setting I agree that safety is Paramounties for the other riders on there, I just don’t know how you manage to not drop your Camera riding one handed on these intense rides bantering away to the Camera as nothing seems to phase you Shawn, I love hearing watching your expressions on these rides not knowing what to expect for your first time you both really cracked Me up with your facial expressions on that teilt freefall and your wooooooh’s Shawn ha ha 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂 great to see you having a great time with your awesome buddy Brett

I believe from watching other videos it starts to tilt forward as it approaches the top. Which means sadly he was probably hanging on for dear life knowing something was wrong. The fact he could have fallen out from the top makes this even worse.

@@fadeddave Since his friend stated that he told him to tell his parents that he loves them in case he doesn't "make it down" I feel as though that was the case. With that kind of panic and with the way he fell with no reaction or scream, I think it quite likely that he fainted/passed out at some point before falling out of his seat. All around so very tragic 😩🙏
