When I saw the title I thought Stourbridge as in Stourbridge, Shropshire in England which has a very unusual very short section of track … but like a lot of U.K. place names, emigrants often took their home town names with them. I’m assuming that’s where this place got it’s name from. But hey, what a great experience this looks. Would love to do something like this myself.

Oh,, how much fun!!!! i want to ride a speeder!! What a blast! How do they store them when not in use? The greenery is amazing through the forest and you are so lucky. How relaxing and exciting at the same time. How much do they charge for a ride? So great to see something just from your side of the Pennsylvania countryside! Idaho has potatoes and white water rafting and you have the trains!

The official name was Inspection Cars. The company was Fairmont Railway Motors, manufactured in Fairmont, Mn. The Hy-Rail units on the pickups were made by the same company. The Hy-Rail has been offered since the 1960's. They were also installed on 4 door sedans and station wagons along with trucks of various sizes. The last 4 door cars with Hy-Rails were an American Motors Matadors in 1975. On the Inspection Cars the original engines were the Fairmont engines, newer ones used Onan Engines, or for greater horsepower the Kohler 4-cylinder engines were used. The Hy=Rails were offered to be installed from 3/4 ton pickups (Model 0307) up to 15-ton Ford F750 or Chevy 7500's. Repair Trucks. They also manufactured Gang Cars, to haul work crews to a site. A4's equipped with English Ford 4-cylinder engines, or A6's and A8's with American Ford Inline 6-cylinder Engines. The very first Inspection Car built by "The Motors" was in 1903, when they married a Fairmont stationary single cylinder engine, used in rural areas and on farms to power many different pieces of equipment, to a 4-man Hand Pump Cart. Fairmont Railway Motors also produced a complete line of Maintenance of Way Equipment. They were bought out by Harsco Corp in 1980, and the entire operation was moved to Columbus, S.C. in the late 1990's, and merged with 2 other Maintenance of Way Equipment manufactures that Harsco purchased' Now known as Harsco Track Technologies. I worked at The Motors" in the 1970's and 80's, in the Service Division manning the "Red Phone". When it rang, that meant someone somewhere needed a repair part yesterday. It's great to see people who really love the older equipment and spend the time, money and effort to keep them on the rails.

I actually have a M9 exactly like the one shown by the man that was talking only mine is ran off peddling just like a bicycle. I run it up and down the main line CSX tracks and simply just lift it off the rails when a train is coming. I have it mounted with wooden poles that slide from the front and back so you can easily move it. If you've ever seen the old 50s or maybe 60s Canadian movie called "The Railrodder" with Buster Keaton then you've seen the same exact speeder before! Only his and these guy's have a gas powered motor on theirs and mine is simply rigged with bicycle peddle and gears...

I remember these speeders on the PGE (Pacific Great Eastern) railway in British Columbia, in the late 50's. I recall one night my mom took my sister and I to pick up my dad at the train station (he was returning home from Vancouver). We waited and waited, then finally saw the headlight of the train approaching and got out of the car to meet it. But...that headlight belonged to a little yellow putt-putt, so we had to go back and wait some more.

Here in the UK we would call the little engines "Wickham Trolleys" which were very common place on the British network for bridge and tunnel inspection by railway engineers. You can see one in action in the film The Great St Trinians Train Robbery where an unlikely pursuit is made by a Wickham belonging to the British Army with the railway scenes shot on the Longmoor Military Railway which was incidentally the home of Gorden out of Thomas the Tank Engine. Just a point on pronunciation as the line is named after Stourbridge where the first lines engines were made is pronounced "stowerbridge" where "Stalbridge" is a small village just down the road from me here in Dorset which had a station on the famous and iconic Somerset & Dorset Jnt Railway long closed.

I would HOPE these types of excursions (managed by railroads) would become more popular. The rail road routes, like this one, are very scenic, built DECADES ago through some of the most beautiful landscapes this country has. AND UNACCESSABLE to 99.999% of us! NOW...even if they're still used....our rail lines are just the venues for a few freight trains, once or twice a day. What a shame! And, of course, the railroads should charge for these opportunities! AND...Why are we ripping up old, unused lines for bike trails...when we can have BOTH a paved trail, along the side AND the tracks???! Also...over a hundred years ago we had single car, "Inter-urbans" covering ALL of our towns and villages. Why NOT consider bringing at least some of them back? What a nice way to spend a day at some of our surrounding towns without spending a ton of money on parking fees, gasoline (or a vehicle)?
