That bolt and bracket... Genius! Thank you. That was the only real concern I had. Personally, I would also add joist hangers on the rim joist. (Outer joist.) Those not only hold the joists vertically, but they add 'gription' to help keep the rim joist from separating from the ends of the floor joists. Those nails are good for vertical strength. (Shear.) But do noting to keep the rim joist from moving outward horizontally. And yes, it does happen.

Nice job on the garage/rooms. Tip, before you place the decking add some metal Z flashing to cover the ledger board and extend up under the siding. You don't want water running behind the ledger board, it will rot the OSB and back of the ledger despite the house wrap, it just can't dry out. Another touch I saw the other day at my local lumber supplier was a self adhesive water proofing tape you place on top of the deck joists before adding the deck boards to keep the joists from rotting on the top edge. Cut strips of ice&water shield or window sealing tape would do the same.

Right on. I'm redoing a stairs that wasn't flashed properly. Lasted for 30 years but I've had to replace a lot of osb and sister in some studs. And, of course, replace some cedar siding. OMG have you seen the price of cedar siding?

Great work again. I love the way that you simply tell the viewers when you're not too sure how to do things. The end result from the effort so far is extremely effective. It just shows you that you don't always need to be a mathematician. The truth is, I would most likely do it exactly the same way.

Good idea about using the support post for the railing. I would recommend using 48 inches fromthe deck surface to the rail cap. Don't forget to use 45 degree bracing. Check out April Wilkerson building her large stairs. Very much exactly what you are doing.

It is recommended to use joist hangers on the outside rim joist as well. Not sure of your local building code for freestanding deck pillars, most codes require 6x6 posts. You can use braced 4x4 as long as they don't exceed 10 feet height as 4x4 deck posts are notorious for twisting and racking. Recommend using cross or diagonal bracing on the corner 4x4s. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Just a suggestion here, but a Ryobi Leaf Blower (as you have that system) works great getting fresh snow moved out of the way of your work area, off the cars, etc. I haven't had to shovel in years since I got mine. The only caveat is that you need to get out early before it ices over or someone tracks it down.

Concrete cylinders. Just a suggestion please put joist hangers on the opposite side from the ones on the ledger board. This will guarantee that one day down the road the joist's will stay in place on the house side and the outer edge. It will add extra stability too. I had a long talk with Safety Sally and we agreed it's not that much $$ to do this. LOLOL Wow looks really nice. Question when you move a couch or chair's/furniture in will the steps be wide enough and the door too to bring in furniture? God's blessings to you all. Everything is looking so good.

Hello Mr Johnson & Family, Think we would of did the same to Both Sides Bolted it to the wall then you don't have the board running along the back wall.. just think it would one look better and two think it would be stronger.. BUT What you Will Need / Should Add to Roof is SNOW GUARD'S lol( not yelling just wanted it to stand out in comment.) will keep Snow from Falling in to Steps or Someone walking down or up at the time of it falling.. And was cool in video that you did showed different thing's by walking out giving chickens water etc. just them couple of things made the video, a little touch of living on making a homestead.. So we Thank you all for your Time.. And we will be here for the next 1

In my Armchair world of OSHA and building codes we have to have diagonal bracing on porches (posts) OVER 10'. The stain on the deck looks great and I use grating for drains to replace a deck board where the snow falls off the roof so it goes right thru. Plans we don't need no stinking plans.

@@fusi0nn Having no regulations or inspections thus "allowing" sub standard practices doesn't mean they are acceptable and should be undertaken. This is a quite high landing and it is only a matter of time before the nails loosen and the structure fails. Standards and "best practices" are the result of lessons learned from failures which have almost always resulted in injuries and often death. I most fervently hope Marty has installed hangers at the rim joist end of this landing so his family and visitors are spared unacceptable and quite frankly immoral risks for the sake of a few dollars of readily available and easy to install hardware.

The board that holds up the floor joist is called "Board that holds up Floor Joists". ;-) Art in Calif.

I noticed you've had to break the ice a few times for the hens, maybe get one of the heated bowls for them, or a heated base (electricity required for both) or a cheap free option is ping pong balls, a slight breeze makes them move, thus disturbing the water surface and preventing the ice layer from forming. Even a black container can help slightly because it can absorb some of the suns heat

The snow test for the stairs will be in March and April. When the freeze-thaw cycle kicks into high gear, there's a chance snow and water will drip down and turn into ice on those stairs, which could lead to an exciting ice slide! But not now, and as you said, the fix is clear enough: extend the roof if it's an issue.

I ALWAYS TEND TO OVERBUILD BUT, I SUGGEST USING TIMBERLOCKS INTO THE ENDS OF THE FLOOR JOISTS THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE JOIST HANGERS HOLDING THEM. JUST FOR FOR ADDED SHEAR STRENGTH.

PS. When I engineer a landing or patio my joists run 2/3 in the house to 1/3 outside and no other support is needed, no posts. Scabbed or extends from the long joists.
