This couple builds dream home in the mountains. Today we start the plumbing on our home in the mountains. You won't believe what we did. We cut the floor joist which might mean we will fail inspection. I didn't consider the possibility of failing because of that. I figured that since it was my home I could do what I want. Maybe I was wrong. I guess we will find out when the inspector comes.
We have been building our off grid home in the mountains for about a year and a half now. It is part of a larger plan to build an entire off grid homestead from scratch. We make new videos documenting the entire process for you twice a week so consider subscribing bit.ly/SubToMar...

@@rickhuntling7338 what county are you located in? What jurisdiction is established as having authority? Engineers are required to stamp their set of plans BEFORE you submit them to the county or city or or health department, whatever jurisdiction has authority. Engineers don’t have authority to inspect any work being done in any county or state as they don’t have the authority to approve or deny any work being done within that county state or city. No private engineer or architect has jurisdiction none the less the power to approve or deny permits submitted to the county. A county inspector requires installations to be done to design spec and often refer to the submittals, cut sheets, manufacture specifications, IBC, IMC, NEC, IPC etc.

Martin, I'm sure you know about cutting into that floor joist the way you did. If you don't have to worry too much about inspection, scab some plywood and added framing members from your scrap pile on each side of the joist with structural screws. You can even add blocking between the three affected joists. Over time, the weakening of that joist will bite you under that toilet. Add some cheap support. Everything else looked great.
@robertlevitt448

The plumbing waste wont pass code. Sharp MS turn 90 can only be used horizontal to vertival. The shower 90 after the santee on its back is a medium sweep. You need to use 2 45s or a long turn 90. The lav 90 needs to be a long turn 90. You can wet vent the lav into the 3" vent and dirty arm over. The toilet vent is flat. The wye must be at least 45 degree from the horizontal. Sugest a clean out on the 3" vent, strap every 4 ' down and up because ABS will bow up. Block the closet bend between the floor the top of the horizontal part of the closet bend. The closet bolts will act as a gear puller and the WC will rock. A wood block prevents this. The truss is toast. You either need an engineered fix or add a truss. If the over span allowances spec. out you might be all right. The truss layout should have been done to accommodate the plumbing. Too bad😂. A left hand tub might have done the trick and they make tubs just for truss abstructions. Another easy fix would use a rodless waste and overflow and plumb around the truss before the p trap. Maybe next time🤷‍♂️. Stop cutting or bending the truss ties becaus you might get called on that. The kitchen and laundry are too far to tie into the 3" bathroom vent. UPC 904-2 the horizontal vent must not exceed 1\3 of the total length. Horizontal rise + vertically run = total developed length. Example: TDL = 9' only 3' is allowed horizontally. Ps. Cut the plywood even flush to the bottom plate on your tub cut out.

My 55 years in plumbing say it won't fly inspection wise nor functionality. Use pex over the garage with the expansion fitting if freezing is an issue. No shark tooth fittings, just buy the pex tool and keep it for the next project. Looks like you guys are having a blast. Me personally have owner built 4 large homes and plumbed hundreds. If you put powdered boric acid mixed with a small amount of powdered sugar (yes really) on all of the bottom sills, you'll stop ants, termites, and roaches for nearly the life of your building. I don't think that the term "off grid" really matters or has any relvant meaning. It's all about living a life that you enjoy in a place that you like. Whatever label one might put on that. The choice between off grid and on grid utilities is mosly economics. If you live in an isolated place it makes no sense to run a waterpipe for miles but if you want Internet I would say it is by defintion an on grid thing whatever technology you use because an internet not connecting to anyone has little meaning. We are considering solar or wind power so your videos on that were very interesting. We are also considering geothermal heating and one option I am evaluating is to drill a well and use it for dual purpose. Extract heat from its water when pumping it up and then use it as drinking water. Have you considered using your well for geothermal heating? I enjoy whatching what you are doing and your positive attitude to challenges. I live in Iceland where we have an old farm that we are renovating and are dealing with many of the same tasks and choices. It's about a mile and half from the next farm and 20 from next town. We have puplic electricity but rest is more or less "off grid" except ... we have a fiber optic internet cable giving us over 500mbps connection. Wireless works poorly in our location and we did not need to pay the full cost because the public utility company needed to go through our land. This top internet means that our grown up kids often stay at the farm for days doing their remote college studies and it will probably mean the same later when grandchildren come into the picture, but it's not the standard cave man technology.

I would put a scrap pc. of 1/2" dry wall behind tub, and sink cabinet to make sure every things fits. Make sure if pipes on on an outside wall that that you insulate them good to keep them from freezing. A little hint, mark all your pipes with a white marker. Make a straight line on both pc. when you have them where you want them, then put an "A" on both pc. next pipe put a straight line and then a "B" on both pc. and so on. Make sure every thing is dry fit and mark it. Saves a lot of work later if some thing does not fit. Before you cut a truss or floor joist I would check with your building inspector. If you lines are in the ceiling and its unheated you might have to insulate those pipes, spray foam the underside of the roof.

I noticed you put the glue on the inside of the down pipe for the waste water (9:19 in) then glued the outside of the corner coupling you were inserting, its important to note that in apprenticeships they tell you only to do the outer part that you are inserting !!!! this way excess glue gets pushed outward. If you glue the inside of the part you are potentially pushing excess glue inwards to the pipe by the edges of the pipe you are inserting, this excess of glue dries and forms a ridge, this excess glue ridge has the potential to cause a build up especially in waste water pipes that carry soapy water hair and sewage !!!!

The title was a bit deceiving, however as a retired plumber/pipefitter with 45 years in the trade I would like to comment on a few things. 1. I can’t speak for Utah plumbing codes, but generally with plastic pipe 1/8” per foot pitch is good. 1/4” per foot was the standard for cast iron as the interior surface is rough. 2. It looks like you used a vent ell below the closet collar, that’s too sharp of a turn for waste piping. 3. As many others commented cutting the truss is a no no. That will have to be reinforced. 4. Not sure why you don’t run your laundry drain across to the main 3” instead of going all the way to the outside wall before turning it to tie in to the 3”. 5. Overall it looks good, you seem to have everything vented properly.

Ok all you armchair engineers, the floor joists are FINE. trimming a couple places to install mechanicals is not going to weaken them, after they have been installed and joined together with the rest of the framing as a system. The subflooring, framing, and bracing design provide weight distribution to allow this.

Awesome work. Plumbing is always a nightmare but if you take a few extra minutes to figure it out it will save a ton of hassle in the long run. Looks like you have it dialed in great.

Hi Martin you over vented your sewer line! 1 x 100mm vent would have been sufficient also the 75 mm sewer line is to small should have been 100 mm and never never cut the joists and your fall is 17 mm per metre !

i thought it was 3/8 inch per 10 foot. but i was all over the place in my house and couldnt see where it was going. so last week i made up my mind one bedroom and bath until its 100% finished. and use the kitchen as the overflow work. when i get that done and i hope by Friday. i will move in the living room and pantry and still use the kitchen as the over flow work. and i think by then i will only have on bathroom and bed room to do and i could care less if it takes another year to do that. i just need out of this deathtrap we are in right now. and praying April 1st we can be in the new house.

MARTIN!!! Do not cut floor Truss!!! The packet of engineering ( drawings) that came with trusses- rule number one, says " DO NOT CUT TRUSS". Rule # 2, if you have to cut a Truss, see rule one! Now we will see if you can pass framing inspection.

That is good, notching/cutting Truss would fail you in most places. It weakens Truss. There are way to repair Truss, I worked 20 plus years in the engineered wood business , and enjoyed watching you build from start. I also am Christian and family man /do-it-yourself handy-man. Learned by doing as you are, and your (whole family) are doing great work. Very impressive, keep it up.

Making 'mistakes' is all part of building your own house, no one is perfect - not even the professionals! How are houses still standing for 100+ years that were built before there was ever building codes?!?! ...We ran into the same scenarios of the joist being in the way just this weekend as well. Your build is looking great!

As long as your following code in your area you should be good. You need to hire building inspectors to sign off on your work otherwise it may be hard to impossible to get insurance and to sell your house if the buyer needs a loan.

I am a St. Louis master licensed plumber and mechanical engineer - if you ever have any high level questions, I’d be happy to try to help, and commend you for attempting so much DYI work. For now though, I can belatedly offer you could have saved yourself a good bit of drilling, piping and fittings by simply installing a wet vent sanitary tee for the bathroom vanity drain arm off the 3-inch toilet vent, which is a typical installation when using a full size vent pipe within 3-to-5 feet of a sink.

Cut a truss and the straps, risky... A bath tub of water + 1( or 2 ) adults can get heavy. All the trusses and weight distribution may be ok... or plan a workshop right below with a wall for support. Watching your video i was wondering if you could have gone through the smaller triangle to the side. Thank you for sharing and exposing yourself to all us experts who probably would have edited it out 😆. Blessings! I love being a do it myselfer and have made plenty of oops's.

Good job you guys. You are doing just fine. Keep up the good work. Get yourselves a ton of caulk. The best thing I did was air sealing every inch of my build inside and out. I also tested different insulation, and I was very impressed with a local Sandpoint spray foam company. No bugs, no cold spots.

Your joists are close so do you have some over engineering leeway? Yeah, I don't know your code - another 'keyboard expert'. There must be a way of MacGyver'in it with cross braces to adjoining joists? Anyway i'm sure I and your other 10's or 100's thousand viewers won't split on you. ha ha

On that 3 or 4” line you could have gone 1/8” per foot and avoided cutting those truss plates. Those metal plates should be reinforced after cutting them. Please call the mfg, they should be willing to provide guidance.

Making a notch in the truss as small as it was would not affect the strength of the truss. The safety margin on them is way more than what is required. But. There are people who will disagree. If there’s regulation you have to follow. It’s check mate. If you hadn’t made a video on it no one would have known. Just opinion. Great job you guys are doin.
