Ridley Scott is one of the most accomplished film directors of all time. Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma and Louise, the Martian and Gladiator are amongst his most celebrated films.
Nearly 86, he works non-stop - his next project is a sequel to Gladiator.
But first, he's here to talk about his new film Napoleon - an epic rendition of the life of the Corsican gunnery officer who became Emperor of France, waged war on England and Europe, and loved and lost the famous Josephine.

He starts the interview with a false 'fact', and follows it up with lazy calculation thats totally off. This is a reflection of the disregard he had for the facts he would include in his film. He says there has been 2.5k books written about Napoleon when the actual (conservative) estimate is well over 200k some say its well over 300k. And then he says 2.5k books written is 1 book written every week since his death, that would mean he died about 50 years ago. I dont think Ridley Scott realizes he has lived over 2,500 weeks already. There is in fact over 2 books written about napoleon for every DAY since he died. Such an important historical figure deserved a better story told about his greatness.

@@SonGoku-tp8gbIf you think Im being pedantic youre missing the point entirely. The point is hes being intellectually sloppy or just plain lazy. The first thing that comes out of his mouth is a false statement that he claims as fact, a statement that he could've easily googl right before just shows how negligent he is. From the get go he reveals his total disregard for the subject of Napoleon, Clearly he has his own(negative) view of Napoleon and wanted to tell the story of Napoleon from his skewed perspective. A perspective he reveals to be have no credibility based on his sloppy and lazy approach to the historical facts about Napoleon.

@@DopeEgo Why are you typing like you're trying to reach the word limit on a school paper lol? Yes Ridley said the wrong number, but you failed to see his point. He's saying there are a lot of books, and there are. You were being pedantic. Anyway, take Inglorious Basterds and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Wildly inaccurate, yet critically acclaimed. Why? So then why is Napolean bad? It's because it sucks, not because it's inaccurate. THIS is the concept I hope you learn.

Awful film. So many things wrong with it. Should have: had a younger actor with charisma play Napoleon, focus on Napoleon and his marshals (so many epic individuals who are completely absent, like Murat) instead of 50% of the film being about Josephine, actually show at least 1 full battle with historical accuracy, focus on epic moments throughout his life like the bridge in Italy, eylau or meeting the pope... I could go on but this film is an epic swing and a miss.

The movie is great entertainment, no question, it was really fun. As a Hollywood movie it works. But to the same extent the movie is really in great parts flat like a frisbee. Napoleon ist a to a large extent a boring, childish guy who has nothing interesting to say. As the main character he remains a background actor in this movie. You never get a hold on what he really was beside being a brutal, but superintelligent emperor, what we already know.

Vanessa Kirby is an excellent actress but she doesn’t have anything in common with Josephine Bonaparte. If you would like to see how Josephine looked like just have a look at Pauline Bonaparte naked sculpture laying down on a bed at the Borghesse Palace in Rome. They were voluptuous women with thick legs , big hips and big boots and not so tall. They didn’t wear panties and underwear clothing so their naked bodies could be seen under their Impire Style Clothing. Josephine came from the Martinique Islands so she spent most of their days naked and doing vudú rituals to keep her husband bonded to her. This is why Napoleon was always crazy thinking about their voluptuous wife.

Ridley shouldn't be allowed to make historical movies anymore. This movie was hastened too quickly during the story telling, the relationships, and the development of the main character. Not to mention that Phoenix at 49 is playing Napoleon from the transition of a teenager and onto his 20s, which made no sense until much later on at the end. Even the lack of Napoleon's character direction, his behavior and education throughout the years, accents being over and under played, understanding and evolvement from Ridley has made Phoenix limited in his performance.

It's like he rewatched Gladiator, saw Joaquin wearing that headpiece and said 'hey, let's make a Napoleon movie' - without reading any history books. Ridley Scott has made some great movies in the past (Duelists, Blade Runner Alien, Thelma and Louise), but hasn't made anything truly great in decades. Stanley Kubrick would have been appalled at this mess of his own dream project...and Scott's whiny attitude doesn't help. Vanessa Kirby is the only good thing here, and that's about it.

It is nearly comical how the movie switches between being a historical movie and a man-hating satire. It doesn't work in this movie and it reeks of modern feminism. The movie is great and I’m sure it will win many Oscars. Not sure about the 2 main actors played Napoleon and Josephine. Napoleon as he was painted was a very attractive Man and probably not so rude as the movie shows specially in bed. He used to belong to the low royalty French society also very sophisticated in human relations and sex. Josephine was a women from the post French Revolution very attractive, with big boots and hips and voluptuous body. Not the skinny women it was presented in this movie. Even she didn’t have many teeths because of lack of dental treatments in that time she was a very impressive woman coming from Martinique and owning a vudú culture that was absent in the movie. Even Napoleon was a war God also he was a big reformer and introduced the modern state with education, public health, law, civil codes and modern institutions. He consolidated Paris as an urban model and a cultural icon under Napoleon leadership. They were created in France for the whole world. This is something I don’t understand because it’s trying to diminish or to hide the big role France and Napoleon had in the modern societies after the XIX century.
