(español-English commentary)

SLEEPTHIEFofficial I'm always about the fantasy movies, etc. that EXPAND your world/imagination, that have something REALLY there that is truly unique, memorable, deeply meaningful in often an indescribable way. For me, in addition to Legend (with live actors in fantasy), I'd add Ladyhawke, The Boy Who Could Fly, Mirror Mask, Willow, the Golden Compass, the Labyrinth, the Hobbit, the original Willy Wonka movie WITH the singing, the 1975 British Alice in Wonderland (ONLY certain parts, NOT the singing), Riddick, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and maybe a few others.

Transforming Tim Curry into Darkness was undoubtedly one of the greatest accomplishments in SFX history. I still can’t believe to this day that it was Tim Curry under that disguise. I mean, he was 8ft 1", the tallest monster ever played by a physical actor!!! But after listening to him in Ferngully and Mighty Max, I could easily recognise the voice. You cannot deny the man had one of the mightiest voices in Hollywood.

Most of today's actors wouldn't go through this type of 'suffering' for their art. (Especially now that technology has advanced to the point where we can 'create' CGI 'people') They should take a page out of Tim Curry's book, he's hardcore, which is why he's so highly regarded as an actor.

I remember seeing this film on TV when I was a kid. One of the most beautiful stories I've ever seen! some 20 years later I bought it on DVD and still come back to it from time to time. People complain nowadays about "poor" effects of "old" films but they don't understand that it's not effects that make a great film, it's a story and the way that story is told (shown). I miss those days when you could watch something that would bewitched you and let your imagination to do the rest. Now we have transformers and films that you can only watch when you are drunk 'cause there is no other way to last 'till the end and not commit suicide...

Rob Bottin is a freaking genius. 30+ years on, Darkness remains the best single-character makeup in film history, IMO. Just brilliant. And, as Ridley mentioned, well-engineered, to boot. It's one thing to turn a man into a 13-foot-tall demon. Quite another to make it possible for him to do that full-tilt run he does in it.

@@felixhorn2559 Technically Bennent would have an Austrian accent in his original voice recording. The studio didn’t like his real voice because they said he sounded like a Nazi. Phenomenal commentary - thanks so much for posting this! Really highlights some key aspects: the "architecture" (i.e., art + engineering) of the Darkness costume and physical demands on / from Curry. Even before this moment, when Mr Scott was discussing aspects earlier, and I was thinking about the movie, Rocky Horror Picture Show as the kind of portfolio item you'd be looking for ... was right up there in my mind. But, then, the prompting provided to more specifically consider the challenges - really brings home how incredibly well this all came together and how brilliant the set up and people involved were / are.

I heard a quote once when I was a child that has stayed with me: “Sometimes even the devil deserves a LITTLE pity.” That certainly holds true in “Legend” if you stop and think about it. The devil in this particular case is a victim of Fate. He was BORN like this, he wasn’t made like this! He didn’t choose to look like that; who willingly chooses to be ugly? What’s more, he said himself, “Sunlight is my destruction!” So, for him, evil isn’t a choice, it’s a necessity. In a way, he’s just like all the other unfortunate people suffering from xendoderma pigmentosum, one of the original sources for the vampire curse--a potentially FATAL condition triggered by exposure to sunlight. Imagine seeing so much beauty linked to a spring/summer/fall/winter day, but never getting to share in it, because if you do, it’ll most likely be your last day alive. Wouldn’t that make you sad and mad? Also, when Darkness goes and allows himself to fall in love--possibly for the very first time ever in his life--what happens? The woman he loves fears and loathes him! What’s more, she uses his feelings for her to get close enough to the unicorn to free it, thereby all but guaranteeing Darkness’ death! First heartbreaks are the worst, especially for those who’ve never gotten to know the sweetness of love before! Anyway, I’ve said my peace, and will welcome any feedback for it. It can be an official debate thing.

This is a peace of art which explores Welness x Imprisonment in the lives of animals, including us humans, through the choices we make. The lesson we take, is how our welness is achieved when we allign our spirit to the elements of nature. Oona is the spirit or energy that constantly follow us, humans who seek welness. And she is always willing to expand, when we make the right choices. Jack is the vegetable kingdom and Princess Lili, the human, who belongs to the animal kingdom, but the one who has tendencies to make wrong choices and to cobit what should stay untouched, internally (when we eat the other animals or their secretions). Beatiful just beautiful.

This creature fascinated me as a girl, haunting my nightmares and frightening me. But when I left girlhood and became a woman, Darkness haunted my most erotic dreams. He made my blood boil and my flesh quake in unbridled, feral desire! Masterfully done, sirs!!

Excellent film. No CGI and yet they captured that magic. You don't see this kind of filmmaking anymore. Really well made.

Tim Curry as Darkness, or "The Devil": 3:05 "I don't think you could have anybody better". And before or since, there has been no one better. Tim Curry's performance will always be the standard on which every other representation must live up to.
