If anyone wonders what song he plays from Monuments as a demonstration: it's Cardinal Red....and it's a fucking banger.

Metallica changed my life. My brother (R.I.P.) showed them to me when I was 5 or 6 and I was hooked ever since. He also started teaching me guitar a year or two later, although all I wanted to learn was Metallica songs, and has made me a lifelong Metalhead (although I enjoy all kinds of music). As difficult as it is for me to pick between Puppets or Justice, Justice has always been my happy place. I love that album so much! Every song is classic (as is pretty much all of their entire early catalogue, and yea, I like Load as well, although they kind of lost me w Reload.

Mendel as a long time fan and supporter of your channel, I think this was a great interview. But, I think you should do one back in your studio and explain / go over how [ you ] see the neck. Scales, or just shapes? Not a video of just shredding but more like ' This is how I view the neck [ gives some examples ] and when I write I tend to [ examples ]. We each have our way of looking at the neck. We each have our own way of understanding modes. Just cover those topics, your views, what held you back at times, examples of learning something and seeing it from a different angle and thus opening up a new musical path to explore. Just what your thinking and how you start with something small and maybe things you do when you get stuck with a progression. A long format, laid back 30m or w/e video. I find these types of videos most fascinating because we are getting to hear how they view scales and theory and modes which could help many players. I hope you do. Wishing you and your loved ones the best my friend.

Sad but True made me want to play the guitar more than any other song or riff. So much so that I finally bought a guitar at age 31 just to learn Metallica. I'm 37 now, and my tastes have changed since then, but I have been hopelessly addicted to playing ever since. Now I mostly look up to guys like John, I love his style of riffing and he has such a sick tight right hand attack.

The thing with passing through the natural sixth while in minor is that it gives you two possibilities for chords: a min7b5 chord for that dorian sound and a min7 chord for that "modern sound"

After the Metallica discussion, 27:10 topic reminds me of the Battery riff feeling so different when it "starts" on 2nd note (after the solo)

In their albums, Meshuggah started to do new stuff. The percussive guitar attack interests me as a thing to try to emulate. Their approach is a VERY interesting technique. Must investigate. (Hi from Houston, Browne!!)

First riff I learned on acoustic guitar was "Ich Will" by Rammstein. I must admit that band was quite something for young teenage mind haha It was first band where I liked the walll of distorted guitars so much i started really comparing guitar tones of different bands. I remember It sounded so unbelivable heavy for me. Now if I try to play drop_D riffs on drop_B guitar it sounds rather thin. That's how 18 years of guitarplaying change your perspective on tone :D

10:26 is there a death metal band that doesn't use whole halftone/symmetrical diminished? there are definitely bands that wrote riffs with whole tone also. doesn't seem unique to meshuggah
