This was oddly therapeutic. The over the shoulder perspective really helped with that feeling.

Well just thought I would let you know, After watching your video, and with your words of encouragement. I ordered the large cocking handle for my cherished Henry Golden boy rifle. I followed your instructions and sewed leather on it. Then replaced the stock cocking lever. And it looks almost as good as if I had you do it for me!! Thank you! I am very proud of My rifle! Now I feel like Ralphie in Christmas story!! Ralphie thought he waited a long time. Hum I had to wait until I was 73 years old..lol !

Thank you for the video. This is a simple, easy to follow tutorial. Over the years I have sewn hundreds of leather items by hand, but I had never seen the finish like this. I’m sure it will work on some of the projects that I will be doing in the future. Wearing gloves certainly helps protect the fingers as you pull the thread tight. My father had a shoe shop and leather repair business for about 70 years and my brother bought his business and is still repairing shoes and making leather products. My father and later my brother took an older pair of gloves and cut the first two fingers completely off and cut part of the thumb away, keeping the ring and pinky fingers of the glove. This allows you to have protection to pull the thread without hurting your fingers, but also allows you to have your thumb and first two fingers free for intricate work like rethreading the needle or scratching your ear. This has worked for them and for me. I suggest this because maybe it will be something you all can use. Once again, thank you for the tutorial.

Kenneth, Thanks for the suggestion - there's always such value in years of experience! I'm definitely going to be cutting some fingers from these gloves!

I just finished doing this (as in like a minute ago). I had the video looping the entire time and it helped keep me focused on task. I tried using gloves, but didn't have the right kind that would give me enough fine movement to effectively navigate the needles through the slits, so I did without. My hands feel it, but no cuts! Most nerve-wracking time was the last bit - it would've sucked to go all the way through and mess up at the end, but I made it through! Looks great and will feel great cycling the lever. Thanks for a great product.

I looked at other products before settling on this one. I'm glad I did. My Henry Golden Boy with large loop lever is now done and looks great! Materials, tutorial and techniques are superior. Just a note, when I did my leather work in the 60 - 70's for small stuff like you showed on the lever arm. I used to lightly dampen the leather so it moulded and fit a bit tighter and was easer to form.

I absolutely love the way this fit my rifle. I'm glad I ordered the second set of pre-strung sinew because I went too high without throughly tightening the first time around and could not get it tight enough. I also tried backing the first threads out to try and tighten again, but didn't really have luck. So, second set of threads through and made sure to keep it all tight and it works perfectly. (Also my first time ever doing something like this). But it looks great, and is defintely more comfortable that just the bare metal.

I wish I had come across your video before I bought the wrap I chose, the instructions were so complicated where the stitching was concerned that It took me 4 or 5 tries before I got the idea. You had to really concentrate and watch what you were doing using their method and it does not look near as nice as yours. The simplicity of your method makes perfect sense, very similar to lacing your shoes. I might have to do over using your methods! THANKS

@mrkultra1655 Жыл бұрын
That’s a really boss kit, thanks for the tutorial. I think that’ll look sweet on my ‘94. Does the trigger guard wrap really reduce the area to access the trigger? I usually shoot with gloves, may be a bit tight.
@HellhoundLeatherCo Жыл бұрын
Thank you! We use a 6oz weight leather and so that means that its 2.4mm (3/32") thick and will reduce your space by that much. When you pair it with gloves, it can be too tight depending on the size of your fingers and how thick your gloves are. We haven't had any complaints about space in the trigger guard over the years, but that might be coincidental and we just happen to have slight-fingered customers haha
@angelabrewer82242 жыл бұрын
Great instructional video! One question why do you not dampen the leather first is it because of the lever being a metal and it can rust?
@HellhoundLeatherCo2 жыл бұрын
Good question! Most levers have been blued or finished and the chance of rust is pretty minimal. I just don't generally dampen the leather because there is no need. The leather is a traditional harness and tanned with a blend of waxes that make it firm but pliable, this makes it fairly easy to mold to the lever without getting it wet first :)

What happens at 3:08, the first stitch. The video jumps.
@HellhoundLeatherCo Жыл бұрын
How strange. I don't remember the video being that way and missing those first stitches like that (they're pretty important and set the method for the whole process). Thanks for calling it to my attention! We'll actually be putting out another one soon to cover different points and questions folks have had over the years (and fix that big hole in the clip). For that section, once you loop the first holes and snug it, you would take your right hand needle, cross it over to the left side and stitch it through the first empty pre-punched hole, from the inside of the leather to the outside. Repeat the process with your left side needle, crossed to to right side going from the inside of the leather to the outside. Just like lacing a shoe. We'll redo the whole video very soon!
@badbadley5 ай бұрын
Somewhere around 3:29 you are starting out, and after crossing the threads you say,. "And take a needle," appearing to point a needle below the starting point, but then it jumps. At that jump it then shows you have already gone up to the second holes. Never does show where "take a needle" gets you. Or why.

Henry rifle owners beware…the lever is NOT nearly this easy to remove much less reinstall
@HellhoundLeatherCo Жыл бұрын
This is true actually, especially recently. Back when we started they seemed simpler and most models we encountered were a simple removal, but lately the recent models that have been released are especially tricky.

Is the finishing loop necessary?
@HellhoundLeatherCo2 жыл бұрын
If you tie the ends of your sinew very well and cut them close, it is not absolutely necessary. However, using the finishing loop will give you a cleaner finished look and will ensure the sinew does not untie over time.

Wtf happened at 3:12ish bc the video skipped and there's a cross section with advancement in the video?!?! What did I miss?? He says keep it loose then wtf
@HellhoundLeatherCo Жыл бұрын
Hey Man, sorry about the bad edit. We're in the process of trying to refilm the video and replace it with one that doesn't skip. At that spot, keep it loose until you have one X up (stitch the sinew right over left, looped around the bottom holes and then one set of holes above) and then tighten it up all at once, keeping the bottom loop of lacing over the corners. If you need a walkthrough, give me a call and I'm more than happy to help over the phone. (385-707-3751)

Nice job, but the trigger guard leather is superfluous. Its wanted on the lever, for padding forceful manipulation. Anyone operating that lever as intended, as in beating a rented mule, with their finger IN the guard is asking to drive the trigger THROUGH that finger.... no thanks.
