I started in the late 80's. My wife wanted to have a hobby and I saw that Tandy Leather in Albuquerque was offering classes and I thought that she would like it. I had no idea that I would be the one who absolutely fell in love with leather crafting. I had great teachers and support from all of the leathercrafters in the area. I eventually ended up teaching classes at Tandy Leather and completed their leathercrafter college program for teachers. Now, I just enjoy doing it all the time.

Beautiful work, sir. If I had one, small, issue, it's that you clearly have that mind for making patterns that I, a mere novice, don't possess.. It would be handy to have a tutorial on how to make the pattern.

The rivets are called Copper Rivets and Burrs as well as the Tubular Rivets, both are available through Tandy Leather Factor online. Not sure if their is a heavier duty snap available other than the Line 24 Snap.

The folks at Tandy Leather Factory dot com have been more than helpful to me as well. They take care of military veterans, too. For those in the DFW area I'm told they are planning on opening a new office just south of I-20, across the highway from the (newer) Veterans Admin Hospital there.

Very nice scabbard. How well do the snaps work out long term on the straps? All most all scabbards I've seen, the buckle is re riveted, but the snaps if they hold up well might be a great advantage in mounting the scabbard to different saddles or opposite sides. I like the idea and had never thought of it before seeing this.
@lionlambleather63067 жыл бұрын
Ed Warnock snaps are very strong and I have them on items that have lasted years. If you are looking to attach to several different saddles you can buy some heavy duty snaps online on springfield leather company or tandy leather company .

Great looking scabbard. I have one concern with this design, what stops the rivets from scratching the rifle? I usually line my scabbards with shearling or a pigskin to keep rivets from scratching the finish.
@RichardBlackII10 жыл бұрын
Good catch, I apologize for not showing that in the video. I always use a hole punch larger than the rivet head then punch as many as I need and glue it to the underside over the rivet I usually use a pig skin or similar thin leather.. Thanks for watching
@JohnnyB822410 жыл бұрын
LOL no problem I have made a few myself and learned the hard way how rivets will scratch a rifle. Greet looking scabbard.

Always come to you, when i need an idea. What would you charge a customer to make a scabbard? Have someone inquiring with me about making one. Don't know how to price it.
@kurtgerhold183211 жыл бұрын
That will depend a lot on leather ,you will use a side to make one so you are talking $180 just for that. If I was to guess 300 -350.
@RichardBlackII11 жыл бұрын
There's an old saying in marketing and it goes like this "Whatever the market will bear" Best practice is price checking other vendors that sell items similar to yours either at the internet or at craft shows. I really can't sell my wears in a low income area and I can sell for more to people who appreciate the art and time in affluent areas. I look at how much leather goes into a project and figure what it would cost to replace that piece, the rest of the price is ego and time and creativity. I always apply neatsfoot oil to raw leather either before dyeing or after. The old timers who made holsters used to dip the whole holster in a vat of heated neatsfoot oil and if it worked for them it can work for me. Thanks for all your support.
@chrisanderson1199 жыл бұрын
What is the benefit to hot neatsfoot oil vs. cold? I've never thought about heating mine up before.

Just use a rifle and trace it out on paper and add 2-3 inches around it, mirror it so that you have a top and bottom panel connected at a centerline, now use this paper template to cut out ur leather, add whatever hardware you'd like, decorate if needed and sew it together and... Voilà!

Just some additional remarks, positive critique,,,,Your edges are pretty ruff, bevel and sand then burnish your edges before you assemble/sew. your Oil is better rubbed with sheep's wool, keeps dirt and sweat from your hands off.....your stitching is some what uneven, check your machine ( Cobra?) seems you skipping stitches or uneven length around edges?? Keep your stitch lines clean, no over stitching existing lines for a clean look!! Nice design and layout....see if you can change strap looped design, maybe sew it on instead rivets, these rivet heads inside will tear up any rifle stock or gun finish!!!! Try not to use any rivets at all....all over all, the scabbard looks real good....small details make it a champion!!! Good video!!!! .
