I highly recommend a stitching pony, that will keep the stitch straight and flush with good tension for both sides. Dreamfactory makes an amazing one for ~100 USD and its a...Dream, to use!

Nice project! Have you considered investing in a Cricut Maker? I export SVG or PNGs from Illustrator, upload into the Cricut software and the Maker cuts out my leather pattern pieces like a boss with no raggedy edges.

How thick of leather do you cut with the maker?

@@scottfanucchi The Maker can cut substrates up to 3/16." I cut 10 key fobs out of 7-8 oz leather in 4 passes using the Maker knife blade (looks like an exact-blade). It took about 15 minutes.
