Crux is referring to the peace talk back in late 2022, Putin offered to leave Ukraine’s land untouched in exchange of them never joining NATO. Ukraine changed its mind due to the EU and US influence and they did perform well for a short period of time. Now Putin’s offer for peace is still no joining NATO, but the annexed oblasts are lost, which Zelensky cannot accept. And now after the Kursk incursion, Putin says there will be no talk of peace, probably until he annexes 4 more oblasts.

I recommend you checking out John Mearsheimer’s lecture on the Ukraine conflict, he gave an insightful lecture to NATO expansion and he is not unsympathetic towards Ukraine. The problem is Ukraine will likely lose a lot more lives if they keep doubling down on this war with no hope of regaining those territories. This is not about who gains and who loses, it’s about who lives and who dies. Your people’s livelihood should be more important than the size of your territory.
