Through the last 15 years and over six LPs (plus 6 EPs), the gruesome twosome of bassist/vocalist Jared Warren and drummer/vocalist Coady Willis have carved out their own surly, pulverizing sound. Sure, they’ve welcomed a guitarist on two occasions-Toshi Kasai and Scott Martin-and beefed up the Melvins for nearly a decade, but as a duo they are their most dynamic, grinding, and careen like the cannonball in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Jared Warren virtually welcomed PG’s Chris Kies into his L.A.-based jam space. In this Rig Rundown, bassist opens up why he chose a J over a P, demystifies his three-amp-four-cab-two-pedalboard setup, and proves that with a few unique octave and synth pedals, he can cover two instruments with four strings.
[Facing a mandatory shelter-in-place ordinance to limit the spread of COVID-19, PG enacted a hybrid approach to filming and producing Rig Rundowns. This is the 31st video in that format.

Jared is a perfect example of why I consider myself a "bass guitar player", and not so much a "bass player." The two little details that might go past people are the P-Bass vs Jazz argument and rolling back the tone for bass distortion sounds.
@ewetoo
@ewetoo 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah bass players are very hung up on those kind of details and will have different basses for exactly those reasons. I got a Squire CV70's Jazz just so I could play punk/funk and keep my G&L SB-2 for the more blues/rock/soul/reggae tones. Athough I'm about to take delivery of a Yamaha 735a that might rewrite all those ideas again.... I should add that the Jazz has roundwounds and can imitate a Precision when it wants to (a good bassplayer knows how) and the SB-2 has flats. I don't dabble in alternative tunings however.

This is great! I was a huge KARP fan and I love Big Biz. I always thought Jared had one of the best bass tones in KARP. The Mel9 and Pog sound amazing together. Love how Jared mentioned Unwound in the first 3 minutes of the video. This was a blast to watch.

So in the past 3 years have you listened to more KARP? First song I heard in 98 was We Ate Sand and I never looked back *PS the 7" for The Whip is on yt and it's amazing: Jared, Scott Jernigan also from KARP RIP on drums, and Joe Preston of Melvins/Thrones/High On Fire/etc. Last recording Scott made - such an incredible drummer ---> hope you like it!

Thank you PG! I've been waiting so long for this video. This band got me into music and have been my favorite band since I saw them open for the melvins in tacoma when I was a kid. I was a shy kid and didnt have the guts to talk to bands I liked but I messaged Jared about guitar pedals and he got back to me and he was really nice. His sound is so unique and rad, its really cool that these guys aren't keeping their sound a secret like some and instead excited to be sharing the joy of music. If you are a music fan and ever get the chance to see them live, do it! I cant wait to hear the new songs. These guys are the real deal.

Big Business with a prominent mention of Unwound (Melvins too)...best rundown since Deerhoof. Excellent bands for bassists looking for a worthy high gain bass tone. The pedal demos online trying to showcase dirt on a bass rig invariably sound gutless & fizzy, and it's obvious they're completely out of their element. They need to listen to bands like Big Business & Unwound (among others like Johnboy, Unsane, Lightning Bolt, et al) to understand what compelling bass dirt should sound like.
