Its sad that you all are giving Ryan so much shit for using EMGs. He knows what he likes and thats what he uses. Nickelback arent a blues or classic rock band where passive pickups might be better suited. theyre a heavier hard rock band with a very high gain distortion sound and the EMGs handle that very well.

EMGs are hot active pickups, usually played with a lot of gain, Hot pickups and a lot of gain basically makes everything sound the same. About the 59's... the pickups where handwound and some of them differ substantially in output, hence they all sound different. Somefolks will tell you that it has everything to do with the woods being used, but for me, I think it's much more likely that variable pickup output and tone pot resistance is causing the differences

the guitars are still tuned to A#. You most definitely don't need THAT much strength to do it. At the tightest, that'd be most like playing standard tuning with 11s. Good point but music is an art by artists and I really think they look at the entire picture they are trying to represent/convey, from visuals to gear to even stage behavior at times. Total immersion is what the audience demands these days, way more sophisticated than back in the day. Distressed just may be a choice to advance the message they create. It can also be carried out through their CD artwork and liner notes but with downloads it is hard to catch that piece of the puzzle.
